A Toyota MR2 DIESEL?! Yes, and it's twice as fast as standard! I test drive, time, and review it...

ZZW30 Toyota MR2/Roadster/Spyder/MR-S have huge potential, but the engine sucks ball. But here's a solution...
Also, the VAG TDI remapper I mentioned is... BoguDH

This looks like great fun, I had my first go mapping a £500 230k mile a4 130 sport I had as a daily while trying to be kind to the ageing clutch/flywheel etc I kept it fairly standard down lower in the revs and any changes I made where 2400rpm and above while letting it make power up over 5000rpm (fuel was severely tailing off by 3500 ish standard) from memory. It felt great after that, opposite to everything Id felt from other diesels with lumps of torque and no rpm which I hadn't enjoyed in the past. I now have a M57 engined 330d for daily and feel like it would be a brilliant transplant for something a bit lighter, it has that petrol like linear power and instant response.

I love the M57 and agree with you on it needing to be in a lighter car. I've had 4 cars with various versions of this engine. An E39 530d auto Touring, E65 730d auto Sport, E90 330d manual, and E91 335d auto Touring. The 730d was the only one that let me down but it was an engine with an sketchy service history and the timing chain snapped at motorway speed on a very hard kickdown... Oddly, the 730d was the only one that was stock! The E39 530d was only mild tuned and felt nice and linear. It was an SE, so it was a big comfy cruiser. Then my E91 330d was tuned as far as it could go with stock turbo and internals and certainly did not have a linear power delivery at all... it was fast then when the turbo was spooled up it hit very hard and went even faster. This sometimes caused the rear end to become unsettled. Obviously the E39 wasn tuned for practicality and economy (as well as power limits of the gearbox) and the E90 was for peak power (with no regard for transmission). Also, different versions of the M57 with very different tuning potentials. Then I got an E91 335d... irony being, even after being tuned, yet again as far as stock turbos and internals can go and with the 700nm limit of the gearbox, it felt slower than the 330d single turbo set up. But, all the numbers proved this to be totally wrong. It was significantly faster. That was because it just delivered usable power from low down all the way to 5000RPM and had no sudden unsettling spike in power. Just keeps building and still pulling strong right up the the rev limit. TLDR: I said it at the very start of this post - I LOVE THE M57!!! And totally agree, it would be a fun engine in a lighter car. I did see someone stick one in a Lotus Type 7... but I would imagine that is way too much torque for such platform. I've also seen an E30 with the 35d engine and manual gearbox conversion with uprated clutch from a 530d manual and that seemed more like it. But, I've always been a fan of M62 powered E30...

I’ve got those fender flares but they don’t look positioned correctly, they should really be installed higher which yes will cause a gap but that is actually the benefit. You’ll be able to lower it about another 2 inches which I cut my progressive lowering springs and now it handles amazingly. I actually think my mr2 has wider/bigger flares but I also run 245 40 17 tires all around only my wheel offset was calculated better.. they don’t stick out quite as far as that. They are 17x9 +25 wheels but I use a 20mm spacer in the rear so the front wheels are positioned the same as the rear. You could probably do some calculations to actually fit even wider wheels than I’ve got if you don’t mind them sticking out like that. I only wouldn’t use a Diesel engine because you can rev high causing you to be stuck with minuscule sized turbos. If I’m going to go through that effort I’m going to throw in a bigger engine with huge turbos.

I think it’s just the camera angle or frame rate or something. Doesn’t look fast, but if you go by how slow it looks when he’s says it’s going 70mph at one point then it makes more sense that it just looks slow but is a fast thing.
