A tour of the ancient Greek Underworld - Iseult Gillespie

Download a free audiobook version of “The Song of Achilles" and support TED-Ed's nonprofit mission: www.audible.com/ted-ed
--
Achilles, just slain in the Trojan War, arrives in the Underworld and is greeted by Sibyl of Cumae- a prophetess and also the realm’s local guide. Though it gets a bad rap, Sibyl is determined to prove to the newcomer that hell is actually a lovely place to live; bursting with historic charm and eccentric neighbors. Iseult Gillespie takes a tour of the Underworld and its most infamous inhabitants.
Lesson by Iseult Gillespie, directed by Arvind Singh Jeena, Nikhita Prabhudesai Jeena, Totem Creative.

Odd that they didn't include the Titans during the tour of Tartarus. They are some of the most important figures in Greek mythology. When the Olympians won the war against the Titans, the latter were overthrown and banished to Hades. Since the Titans are primoridal forces of nature, they cannot be killed, so the Olympians had no choice but to imprison them in Tartarus, the darkest deepest depths of the Underworld. For all of eternity, the Olympians have to struggle to keep the Titans locked away, lest chaos be unleashed upon the world and disrupt the order of the Olympians. Since the Gods of Mount Olympus symbolize the faults and flaws of humanity, as well as what we strive to be, they also represent mankind's eternal struggle against chaos by upholding order through great effort and struggling. After all, it takes an individual of great strength, such as an Olympian, to overcome the Titanic forces of everyday existence.

I liked Albert Camus’ nihilistic interpretation of Sisyphus as not torture but always having a motivation, a goal to reach. Because no matter what happens, he never gives up. He still, day in and day out, tries to push the boulder up the hill. He could easily give up, yet he never does.

Not included are The Fields of Punishment (the punishment for sinners not bad enough for Tartarus) and Asphodel Fields (the catch-all for everyone else)

The only thing better than the animation of Achilles is the voice of the narrator; I love her hushed gossipy tone when she talks about the king flirting with Hera 😂😂

Anyone remember the episode of "Dinosaurs" where the grandma kept dying and reporting back about the afterlife so she wound up on TV selling condos in the afterlife? This reminds me of that episode. Good fun.

I’d give this around five stars this is a must see destination, but mostly because I got the best spots in the house. Wouldn’t want to be those in the lower decks, not sure why they chose those spots of all places, they probably give this place -10 stars. Let’s just say that once you come, you’ll never be able to leave😅😁
