McAuliffe was the Division Artillery commander, then acting 101st commander when Taylor went back to the US for a conference in December’44. It seems appropriate that the Bastogne Barracks was home for an Artillery unit.

Loved this episode as my dad was there during the Bulge with the Seventh Armored Division. He was the driver of M5A1 in a reconn role. His tracks were shot off at St. Vith and the crew had to run back to the American lines on foot. Always interested in this battle. Colonel Moran has to visit the Australian Armour Museum in Cairns, Northern Territories to see restoration at its best. There is also a place in Poland that makes new old parts for most WWII military vehicles.❤

The older I get, the more interested I become in history. Thanks for giving us bits and pieces they never taught us in school. I’ll definitely be looking for more from this awesome museum. I sincerely hope they get younger guys to come be part of it. Losing institutional knowledge through retirement is heartbreaking.

The battle/baby campaign was lost in the NORTH (in the first few days), not in the South days later at Bastogne (days later), but the propaganda machine had better sound-bites in the South. Oh, it also had Patton bombasting his way through, too!

Had the honor of talking with a veteran of the European fighting , every time he spoke of the combat he would talk about the courage of the men going through enemy fire to get ammo for the BAR , then I find out he was the BAR gunner , that enemy fire was primarily for him . Never a mention of his own courage . Courage so common it was the rule .

Maybe the Mechanics at the Belgium Bastogne Barracks Military Museum, should make contact with the Australian Armoured Museum in Cairns/ Queensland - as they seem to be able to "take a piece of metal and reproduce a part that is not obtainable from original source", or get a local Metal Foundry to reproduce what they want.

Why don't the old generation of mechanics who still know how to work on these vehicles wear GoPro cameras and explain what their doing and why, saving the knowledge for later generations? It would require extra pay and funding but other than that what issue could there possibly be? It's so simple but yet money matters so not instantly implementable unless budgeted for.
