A Totally Objective Analysis of Starlight Glimmer | Part 1

Ойын-сауық

A weird man attempts to analyze everything about a lilac coated pony in a small children's show. Also Glimmy is best pony.
Part 2 will be coming when it is accomplished, I need a small break after this cause this was incredibly daunting. This is my first time doing such an editing style like this, and honestly I am absolutely digging it. Only problem is that it takes a very, very good while to create, leading to me being stuck in an eternal void dimension. But I'm still a fan of it, so I don't really mind doing more of it.
Edit: Yooo I got hit by the Equestria Daily gods, pretty cool: www.equestriadaily.com/2022/0...

    You know, one of the basic premises behind this show is that you'll never know how dumb you're acting in many situations, unless somepony tells you. In which case, considering Starlight was alone for all that time, I think her backstory makes far more sense...

    In regards to Starlight’s backstory, I completely get it because I can almost directly relate to it. As a very young kid, about 7 or 8. My *BEST FRIEND* moved away. We did everything together. I cannot over emphasize how much of a best friend to me he was at the time. And leading up to the move, all he cared about was playing with the bubble wrap and packing stuff.(as I literally helped him pack) All conversation around the move was about how excited he was to get a different room and backyard, etc. Not a *single* time was any sentiment that he might miss me or be sad that he was moving away uttered. And he never even said goodbye either. Just gone one day. No phone number given for contact, no new address given to meet up, nothing. My best friend was gone with not even as much as a wave goodbye and as far as I know he went smiling ear to ear. It made me pretty sad and made me feel like we were never really friends. If he was so excited to move on that he couldn’t even be bothered to give a goodbye or show that he might miss me then how little esteem did he actually hold for me? Did he really care more about moving away than me? And other similar thoughts occupied my mind for months. (In a much more fuzzy and childish way, as I didn’t have the mental faculties to truly reflect and realize these thoughts at the time 😃) I’m not sure if one of the writers experienced something like this themselves or if it’s just coincidence. But the scenario is not wholly unrealistic. As a child, my experience that rings very close to Starlight’s hurt for months. It may have even had deeper, further reaching mental effects. So it makes sense, to me at least, that an incident where your best friend just up and leaves in the blink of an eye with seemingly no care for you, would eat Starlight up from the inside. And that’s not even to take into account the importance of cutie marks in Equestria. The CMC are perfect evidence that cutie marks are extremely important to at least a decent chunk of foals and hold a lot of mental weight. That in combination with the immediate abandonment is what I see as a mine’s worth of salt to rub into the wound that is Starlight’s worst day of her fillyhood. Others say that it’s not a substantial enough reason for Starlight to go on and do “X Y Z.” But there’s a couple important points to be aware of. 1.) The severity of events on someone’s psyche is not determined by outside observers. It is determined by the one who experienced them. It is not how hard an experience was objectively that matters, it is how hard THEY took it. And Starlight clearly took it hard. *I* took my experience hard, despite it appearing from the outside to simply be someone moving away. I understand that fiction is fiction and writing is not meant to be perfectly realistic. So I can see how some would find it just lazy writing not to give a villain a good backstory that matches their actions. But I’d also remind them that starlight was written TO BE reformed. 2.) Starlight’s actions and their consequences were not envisioned by her to be as bad as they were. Yes to US they are massive and put her on level with the other antagonists out to rule the world. Whereas Starlight felt she was completely in the right and didn’t even set out to forcibly conquer the world.(forcibly as in with physical violence or combat) Twilight and friends showed up at her village unrequested and it’s implied everyone there found their way to her village of their own accord. Starlight was not foal-napping anypony or walking into other villages to recruit. She merely acted opportunistically when a literal princess came to her village. Starlight never set out to directly attack Equestria or one of it’s leaders, it seems her plan was simply to slowly let ponies “learn” about her “enlightened” lifestyle of their own accord as they traveled to her village. Unlike every other main villain, Starlight did not set out to attack Equestria and take it over by force. At least not in a way she herself considered “force.” We as the audience are aware of the immense dangers of the “lifestyle” she wanted to spread. But Starlight was a genuine believer and in some weird way her wounded mind thought that she was helping. All the other villains held no such delusions. They were fully aware that their goal was taking Equestria by force so that they could live better at the *expense* of others. Actions taken after Twilight liberated the village were wholly reactionary. And Starlight herself proved she set out ONLY to get back at Twilight. She didn’t think her actions would doom the world. Her responses when challenged by Twilight and her denial show that she believed only twilight and her friends would be effected. Once again, while the results of Starlight’s actions were massive and far reaching, the impetus for said actions was not nearly as malicious as any other villain of the series. From Starlight’s perspective, delusional as it might be, she believed that she was just getting back at somepony who wronged her; somepony who showed up at her village unsolicited and ruined everything she built. Not destroying Equestria. 3.) Due to the nature of our brains, we all want some really important reason for bad things to happen. If a dictator burns down a country, we want to be told they did it because they were beaten as a child or tortured for years straight. When in reality, Starlight did what she did because of what effected HER badly. Not what a jury of the masses would come to a unanimous decision was objectively “bad enough” to warrant the damage she wrought. Starlight’s backstory is realistic in the way that, bad things happen for what we would say are bogus reasons all the time. Not every villain in the real world have some dastardly backstory, and almost nobody *thinks* THEY’RE the bad guy. Very few people wake up and purposefully choose cruelty and acridity for the pure sake of being cruel and acrid. I like to believe Twilight understood all this. At least a little. And that’s why she was willing to redeem Starlight instead of punish her severely. Even after the threat to the world was removed. Starlight’s initial actions do not hold a candle to the other villains in terms of pure villainy. Everyone else wanted to rule Equestria for their own sake just because they wanted to rule. Starlight wanted to do what she thought would *help* Equestrians in the long run. At no point after she’s found out did she ever “drop the charade” and declare that she was just using her village to gain power for the sake of it. Even while facing Twilight later on Starlight is convinced that her village was a good thing. And that’s why I understand and like Starlight’s backstory. It makes sense *to me* due to personal experience. It’s also why Starlight is the best pony. Her character has a lot of depth and she is the most unique villain in terms of motivation. She was delusional and anguished, not evil. Tl;dr: Just read the last bit.

    You write so beautifully. I had a blast reading every single paragraph. Never lose that, it's a skill. Thank you for sharing! I already liked Starlight, but this was a very nice reflection/analysis of her character, and I'm tired of getting hate just for liking a fictional character :"] So it's really reassuring to read. PD: To add a bit of my own experience. I was one to move pretty often from my friends instead of the other way around. I remember moving 7-8 times by the time I was 17. And reflecting back on it, with a more developed mind, I can clearly see some long-lasting consequences of having experienced that lifestyle in my youth. And I can tie some of the personal anguish I experienced to a butterfly effect very likely generated by this. From the outside, I was just a kid moving away, but you'll never know what goes through the mind of someone or what impact this can cause beneath their skin.

    Technically, we don't know that Starlight never tried to contact Sunburst. But because of how Sunburst's mother tries to control his life, he probably threw out any letters Starlight wrote to him assuming they were from his mother. After all, it's revealed that he throws out letters from Sires Hollow. So yeah, Starlight doing what she did may be because of Sunburst's mother. Wow... I'm actually kinda surprised that I'm not the only one to see that detail about Sunburst's mother. Then again, I was also surprised that nobody considered that possibility either. It just seems so obvious to a rational thinker.

  • @rejisha

    @rejisha

    Жыл бұрын

    we do know though that sunburst is still a contributing factor without his mom. His shame of flunking magic school and achieving greatness fall, pretty much made isolate all that time and avoid contacting her himself all that time. It was Starlight who had to go to him. So it could be said the initial reason reason Starlight changed was wack but the wackness should fall somewhat after the new information of a later time learned that gives more reason.

  • @changelingkingcocoon5029

    @changelingkingcocoon5029

    Жыл бұрын

    @@rejisha I'd argue that it's a chain of events that sent her into a downward spiral. It began with when Sunburst first got his cutie mark, specifically the even tthat caused it. He saved her from a pile of falling books. Granted, it likely wouldn't be much more than just a few bumps and brruises, but to a child her age, it still would've been at least a little traumatizing. At the time, she was also likely in awe at Sunburst. So when he was sent to Magic School, it meant that her savior was gone. And that's when you can get to Sunburst's mother sending letters and wanting to control his life. So whenever Starlight tried to contact him, he would just ignore them like he did his mother's letters. And with Starlight's mindset, him ignoring her affecter her that much more. So yeah, this may all stem from childish reasoning. But what happens to you as a child influences how you grow up. So even if you grow out of that childish reasoning, there's still that part of your mind that has been molded because of it.

  • @rejisha

    @rejisha

    Жыл бұрын

    @@changelingkingcocoon5029 Yeah I get that. I'm just saying he could have reached out by sending a letter directly to starlight (Celestia or something else can probably send it to her with magic). Like he could ignore letters received but he could send letters back. it would let her know how he was doing at the time. but yeah I agree with all that. they were kids and miscommunication could really affect a person terribly. And feeling controlled, useless, busy or ashamed for so long could make a person ignore or avoid or isolate. Either way, things like that can make one feel (or in their cases feel like) there is no way to end it or only one way they found to end it.

But the point is, we don't question them. They become a false bedrock of things we just assume are true because we've never thought to question them. And yes, most if not all of them we picked up as children, when we were too naive to know any better.

    I never had an issue with Starlight's backstory. I carry more than a few things from deep in my past that I would gladly take a whole planet off the census for, but I also understand that I do not have that power and the damage I can reasonably cause just wouldn't be enough to sate my ego, let alone my id. Starlight's goal wasn't to cause war and slavery and genocide and all that. Her goal was to make Twilight miserable. Twilight's joy came from her friends, Starlight's joy came from the reverence of her town. That town was taken so Starlight just wanted to return the favor. On top of the fact that we keep getting sent back to a certain point in time so all of these disastrous futures are more hypothetical than anything. Solid, but not permanent. Now imagine if someone actually brought down atrocities, did damage that couldn't just be rewound and taken back, and all for some small, petty reason like.. I dunno, they couldn't get into art school or something. Damage done for a petty reason is still damage, and believe you me, it can feel so very good to indulge in those small, petty hatreds that you've been carrying around for years if not decades. And watching someone else wildly succeed and bask in something that you never even got a real chance at can cut deep and fester hard until you find yourself thinking that it's only a matter of time before your self control cracks.

It's likely they get upset when their criteria for likability or potential or relate-ability is not up to their feeble standards. It's also possible they will forget not everyone reacts the same And that she was a kid driven to that path due to lack of resources or being pushed to such path by resources. Bet if she made a deal with a villain that claims they will keep their promise, people will likely bash her cause they know the obvious or watched it already, acting like she should know. Also a person who experiences the same crap repeating may become numb and feel there is no real way out and if there is there is only one possibility they found.

    As a dude who was in high school when this show began, had friends who were bronies who the rest of us considered weirdos, grew up and discovered great old shows I'd missed like Avatar, got married and had daughters, and then watched the entirety of MLP:FIM with them as a family, I've gotta say... Starlight's story is perfectly fine, and her whole arc is my favorite. Including the "petty" motivation for her turning evil. MLP:FIM's a great show and they did her arc justice. Being abandoned by your childhood best friend can be just as devastating to a little girl as being beat up by your own father can be for a little boy (a la Zuko). If you don't get it, then your being a dude is showing. What most bronies don't understand, most of them never having married a woman or raised daughters before, is that emotional damage runs deep, and the most illogical and destructive outlooks and coping mechanisms can get cemented even deeper. Yeah, it's illogical. It's petty. It's overwhelmingly vindictive and oppressive, overcompensating for the trauma tenfold and not caring who you take down with you. But it's real to them and they manifest it into reality by embracing their _perception_ of the trauma into their very identity. Don't believe me? Just look at what cancel culture has become today, led completely by the exact same illogical coping mechanisms for things that make zero sense on the surface. And the only way to fight that and get through to these traumatized people is with empathy. Starlight's motivation for her dark deeds is pretty much the definition of Toxic Femininity. It's the form of vindictive, selfish violence and aggression that women take, as opposed to men, born from the same place of self-righteous narcissism and victimhood mentality that Toxic Masculinity comes from. They're both just overly-political words for the universal concept of "being an asshole," and whether they "exist" or not, the reality of people given into overwhelming douchebaggery is real, and it starts with childhood trauma. For girls, being abandoned by your friends over _anything_ can very easily make that thing, whatever you interpreted it as or latched onto, become the sole object of your existence, with you determined to escape or destroy it til the day you die. And it takes a massive amount of patience, empathy, challenges, and forgiveness to overcome, all of which Starlight goes through over the course of many seasons. She's not instantly "cured" of her assholery, and that's what makes it realistic and awesome. Starlight makes sense, at least to a guy who understands women as much as any loving husband or father can. I put her redemption arc right up there with Zuko's, even though they're vastly different, because it was given time to flesh out and she had many steps backward along the way. If it ended right after she showed Twilight her backstory, and she was just perfect after that? It would've sucked. But as it is, the following seasons did a powerful commentary on forgiveness and being willing to challenge and change yourself for the better.

    I just really hate Starlight. She lost her friend when she was like six years old and spent the entire rest of her childhood and teenage years going insane about it and somehow came to the conclusion that she should become a communist, brainwash a whole village, and literally end the entire world because of one singular issue she had when she was a toddler that everybody goes through. Then she was immediately redeemed and accepted by everyone who knew her and what she did, received no punishment for her war crimes (while an actual child is eternally locked in prison for doing similar things).

  • @2Navalie

    Honestly for the first part you should watch the video or a couple comments here because they explain why Starlight put a footstep into becoming a villain, but we can only make guesses that she had a bad childhood and she wasn't taught to react to a situation like this, whether big or small. but for the second i agree, Even if Starlight has to be reformed she should at least have some jail time to make her realize what she has done and mass of it all, instead of instantly forgiving her. Her arc could also be influencing kids to forgive anyone, which could be a common misconception.

    Or maybe that memory stone shit from eg was found by the legion of doom after they broke out of their stone prison and used it to turn Starlight back into a villain, which then leads to Princess Twilight also having her memories changed so she's back to being a friendless workaholic, which creating Midnight Sparkle, who took away everyone's magic because the Legion of Doom said it would be the best way to study magic after -killing Starlight- tying off loose ends, which forces the young six and the pillars to banish Tirek, Cozy Glow, Chrysalis, Midnight Sparkle, and themselves to Limbo. Afterwords, the few ponies who survived would build the G5 world while the rest of the creatures went underground to guard a shrine where the end of the old world is sealed away

    Amazing video! Might have been your first full-on commentary, but you did really great! Editing was fast as hell, but it’s a testament to how much effort you put into this and was really funny to watch. Also nice how you addressed some complicated stuff with Starlight. Her backstory was definitely something that I saw argued about a lot back when I was really into MLP. I honestly just found it fine because of the child perspective, but you did a good job addressing both sides of the argument. Looking forward to Part 2! I was disappointed with how they handled Starlight because the S5 finale made it look like she was gonna be a 7th Mane 6. But then they'd only ever have her on the periphery of the group, either only getting 1-on-1 with Twilight (once with Pinkie) or twice getting to be with all of them. How many times did she stay back while they all did something? I wanted to see her way more integrated into that group, and the S8 finale did her dirty. She got off-screened by a _child_ and spent the entire time locked up and didn't get to do anything. So many characters got to help but her, and she missed out on all of it. And she never got revenge. You know, Shining Armor at least got to help drive out the changelings at the end of Canterlot Wedding.
