A Torpedo Malfunction Threatens to Destroy a U.S. Submarine

Ойын-сауық

    I think that that torpedo did not want to be stuck. It wanted to be free--free to swim, splash, turn, and dive. I think that everyone can relate to that torpedo.

    The US were hindered by torpedoes running off course, failing to explode, exploding too early. The Japanese had the Long Lance which almost defies belief for the era. The Long Lance's maximum range was an incredible 22,000 yards (11 nautical miles) at a speed of 49 knots, or 40,000 yards at 36 knots. The U.S. Navy’s Mark 14 torpedo, in comparison, had a range of 6,000 yards at 45 knots or 15,000 yards at 26 knots. And the Long Lance was far more reliable.

  • @2ravenrick

    @2ravenrick

    5 жыл бұрын

    The Long Lance were also a major liability for the Japanese. They relied on compressed oxygen to power them instead of compressed air. This created an explosion and fire hazard which would threaten to explode the warheads as well. A cruiser in the Battle off Samar had its bow blown off when those torpedoes exploded after it was hit. Another cruiser saved itself by immediately launching all of its torpedoes when it was first hit.

    Unlike other submarines during WWII, the USN's Gato, Balao and Tench class submarines were designed for crew comfort. They were air-conditioned, equipped with refrigeration, and each crewmember had their own bunk..

  • @onastick2411

    @onastick2411

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, they were called Fleet Submarines, because they were specifically designed to operate with the main battle fleet, to scout ahead, and provide reconnaissance, and possible whittle the enemy fleet down a bit before the big boys start lobbing shells. This required them to have great range and great speed and be large submarines, for food, fuel etcetera. Quite by coincidence, when the Fleet was destroyed at Pearl, those very attributes we perfect for a protracted submarine war in the wastes of the Pacific. Guess God was on our side in submarine design, the devil was responsible for the torpedo's unfortunately.

    Oh come on..... who are you guy kidding? The torpedo cannot be armed while still in the tube, it has to travel a certain distance before the fuse is armed so there's no possibility of it exploding while still in the tube.

  • @markwatson3135

    @markwatson3135

    2 жыл бұрын

    It wasn’t in the tube it was hanging out of the outer door, and the arming lock had tripped, so the propeller that armed the torpedo was turning. It’s call a “hot run”. My dad was aboard silversides for 3 war patrols under Nichols, and that had it happen as well. Apparently somewhere in her life number 6 tube was knocked out of straight and if there wasn’t enough impulse air the torpedo would bind in the tube

    Ridge Bolosan Balao and Gato, From random research the submarines themselves were well designed, the torpedoes though were constantly plagued with issues throughout wwII. First the mk14’s issues with depth and actually exploding, then the mk18’s issues with the occasional wild boomerang (like Tang), and later on the sonar-guided torpedoes that I can’t recall the name of seemed to suck pretty bad. But for the most part they did their job once the issues were fixed

    A torpedo is forced from the torpedo tube by a slug of high pressure air. As long as the torpedo is far enough back in the tube to still form a seal between the tube and the torpedo, it will be ejected from the tube. If there are any TM'S out there, please verify that this is correct or correct me if I am in error.

    True, up until the 1970's with the Mk-48 program US torpedoes were..... rubbish. The Mk-37 torpedo specifically was probably the most rubbish of them all because it was so incredibly slow it was basically useless. The Mk-48 though was the game changer and the ADCAP program took the Mk-48 and made it even better. The UK still has the best torpedo though in the Spearfish. That thing does 80kts!
