Plot twist, they were BOTH time travelers, and Brennan said the "three years old" line, hoping that the "local" would correct him, and thus tell him the correct year...

This has to be the only way this works out because of the following: -Vaudeville is dead by 1932, so for Zac to be "more old timey than my pop pop" (which would be a nickname for a grandfather), the year would be between 1968 and 2004. -The joke about ripping the phone out of the wall implies that wall phones would be the only communication device, which would put the scene between 1946 and 1973. This WOULD narrow the window down to between 1968 and 1972, but then he mentions "tin foil is only 3 years old at this point". Tin was suspended after world war II (a war that ended in 1945) by replacing it with aluminum, so that would pin point it at 1948; outside of the previous window of time. Furthermore, he also mentions that he's going to report his list of communists. McCarthyism and the Red Scare officially ended by 1967 when the Supreme Court labeled a ban on communists unconstitutional.

So assuming he's late on news of the red scare or his father or grandfather had a kid at a very young age, everything points to late 1960s, except the foil comment- which is extremely out of place.

@@flowersandwater666 So if he's talking about tin foil in this sketch, it couldn't possibly be the 1950s, because tin foil was barely used at all after WWI. I doubt he's actually talking about tin foil as it was only used before 1910 before being replaced with aluminium. Also, Vaudeville shows were at their peak in popularity during the late 19th century, the same time tin foil was actually commonly used. Due to this I'm assuming this was a Freudian slip on his end and he meant aluminium foil, which was invented in 1910. Therefore the year he is portraying is likely 1913, and Vaudeville shows were still quite popular up until the 30s. Also, the first wave of the "Red Scare" happened during 1917-1920, so the communism part isn't too far off time period wise. This isn't meant to be at all condescending. I just think things like this are rather interesting.

Vaudeville was most popular in the US from the 1880s to 1930s. Tin foil was used in the late 19th century. Aluminum foil (which is often called "Tin foil") was invented in 1907, but fully replaced Tin foil after World War II. The quote about Communists probably references one of the Red Scares, either the first one from 1917-1920, or the second one from 1947-1957. So best guess is, they are around the year 1950, and Brennan is talking about Aluminum foil which has recently become common in his own town, but still calling the new thing by the name "Tin foil" despite probably already knowing about the other kind of foil made from real Tin. Still less anachronisms than most movies set in "The Middle Ages," so not bad for someone who had not looked up any of these dates beforehand.

He could always get a newspaper, sure that’s got the date somewhere
I’d pay real American dollars and sit in a real theatre to watch two and a half hours of Zac doing this
The red scare was 1917-1920 and foil was first commercially available in 1913, so I guess the time works out

I love this voice in particular when Brennan does it-there’s just so much charm to how amazingly he steps into another character completely
Zac should count himself lucky. Brennan was obviously gonna rip off his flesh suit to reveal full Catholic regalia. “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!“

For anyone wondering, the year was 1916

I was going to say the 1920s. There was a fair amount of cocommunist activity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries around labor unions. But I think fear of it really solidified after the end of WW1 when the USSR turned a scary but fringe political theory into an actual political state that threatened the "western world order". Plus, vaudeville probably hadn't faded from public entertainment options as much as was implied by 1916. I don't know the year tin foil was invented, which would provide a specific date, but it is strange that someone would remark on the exact length of its existence in casual conversation.

The specific date of the invention of tinfoil is tough, originally the fringe inventor created an inefficient process for its creation back in 1905, but the industrialised creation of tinfoil only came about in 1910, meaning this'd be pitching the year between 1902 and 1907. With both of your background details on the subject I'd sway towards estimating on the higher end of this range.

the fact that I couldn't figure out who the time traveler was proves that the prompt was successful.
Brennan is too accurate to the year to not be a time traveller
Josh looking at the camera is the funniest thing because he's as confused as we all are 🤣🤣🤣
I Googled. Tinfoil was invented in 1905. So he's going for 1908.
Zach plays the straight man so well.
Seems like they were going for late 40s to 50s, however tinfoil was invented in the 19th century and the cheaper, more popular aluminum foil sheets were created around 1907
@sknight43

After 1 minute of googling, it seems that applies more for commercial use in goods like candy wrappers and packaged foods. I couldn't pin down an exact date for household aluminum foil, but Reynolds released theirs in 1947, which would actually put it in exactly the right timeframe for some good ol' McCarthyism.
