A Thriving Singapore Before Stamford Raffles, From Orang Laut To Craftsmen

Primary school history lessons teach that Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore in 1819. But excavation at Fort Canning by NUS Professor John N Miksic and archaeologists has proved that a large, diverse community thrived here more than 700 years ago.
Then there are the Orang Laut, indigenous sea people who "came from Singapore river", but were displaced by Raffles, said their descendant Mohamed Nassir Ismail. He grew up along Kallang River, in a village called Kampung Kuchai.
This #SingaporeBicentennial, in the 2-part series Becoming Singapore, Eunice Olsen takes viewers on an evocative journey to meet people with rich and diverse stories that reflect how there’s not just one singular Singapore narrative, but a meeting of many tales.

This is a very good documentary. So many of my dear Malay friends in Spore are desendants of Orang Melayu of Spore and Orang Laut, the indigenious people of Singapore. They never came from anywhere else but here in this island of Singapura and they should be proud of it 💕

Singapore was part of what was known as the Malay archipelago. During those times, there was no Malaysia, Indonesia etc. Parts of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, even Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia were in this archipelago. I became interested in this history before 1819 when i travelled to Bangkok and i came across Malay people(just like me). Seriously, i have never thought there were Malays in Thailand. The first meeting was in the MRT, when i was travelling from bangkok airport. This guy was looking at me in the train. makes me a bit uncomfortable as i was travelling solo. Then he spoke Malay to me, i was surprised. As we speak, he told me that he was from a place called " Sungei Golok" which i thought was in Malaysia. As we were conversing, then he told me that "Sungei Golok" was in Thailand, and that in southern Thailand there was 3 provinces of Malay people. Really surprising as before this i have heard that southern Thailand is inhibited by "Thai Muslims" but these people are Malay people just like me. Then after i got back from Thailand, i researched a lot about history before european invaders such as British came to Asia. Not to be racist but Chinese and Indians were actually migrant workers brought in by the British to Malaysia, Singapore to work and they are not actually natives to South East Asia. You can see how Malays, Siamese(Thais), Filipinos, Indonesians look alike and see how different Chinese, Indians are to them. In Singapore , we were mostly taught history of Singapore from 1819 onwards and i believe if you are to pursue history on a higher level you will learn more about Singapore before 1819

Nobody says Singapore was nothing before Raffles. Of course there was always trade across the Strait. But there were also pirates, and lawlessness and rapacious sultans. Raffles brought the idea of free trade, the “safe” harbor, and a uniform code of law under which all could prosper.....not just the outlaws, gangsters and potentates. Do you wonder why Singapore is different and better than its neighbor Indonesia? The answer begins with Raffles!

I am not denigrating Indonesian people. I am saying Singapore had the benefit of a system introduced by Mr Raffles. And many countries, recognizing a successful country, study Singapore in order to appreciate what the the Singaporeans do right. There is no intent here to stir animosity. The goal is to improve the lot of humanity. There is a roadmap to prosperity, introduced by Mr Raffles, and we should not let our emotions cloud our vision.
