Orang Seletar: The People Who Were Here Before Singapore Was Singapore

They were once Singapore’s indigenous sea nomads. Now, most of the Orang Seletar have settled in villages along Johor’s coast, with their love for the sea keeping their culture alive.
Orang Seletar is one of the native Orang Laut tribes. Orang Laut means sea people, and according to early Portuguese records, the Orang Seletar used to dock in various spots along Singapore’s and Johor’s coasts since the 14th century, including Seletar island.
Want to know more about the Orang Seletar? Check out the exhibition, Orang Seletar: Beyond the Water's Edge at the Malay Heritage Centre from 16 - 20 October 2019, 10am to 6pm or at National Library (Level 10) from 20 Nov -18 December 2019, 10am - 9pm.

I’m free to call it whatever I want. Between Malay and your ‘Hesperonesian’, Malay is more widely accepted, understood and established. ‘Hesperonesia’ is just some term coined by some German scholar to refer to a language group, not a race LOL. Language does not equate to race. Whoever highlighted the comment above indeed does not know any better and instead chooses to bash Malayness at any opportunity. Any random person on the street does not recognise the term ‘Hesperonesia’ an artificial term coined by a foreigner. But we willingly associate ourselves with the Malay identity. And may I ask why is Malay Race a ‘misnomer’? The same can be said about the Chinese, Indian, White and Black Races. But we do not see that many people pushing such an agenda for those groups, correct?

@@Khatulistiwan Yup. I believe many of those aforementioned terms like "black race", "Chinese race" and "Indian race" are misnomer in many ways. A Sri Lankan would definitely correct you if you classify him/her as an Indian. A Formosan living permanently as a Zhongguonese would definitely reject being identified as a Chinese. It seems that Malaysia and Singapore really buy those things. You do even think we Indonesians are part of your land called 'Malay Archipelagos' which is adopted by Europeans. 😏

No Orang Lauts are more closely related to the Orang Aslis. They are the original Indigenous people who've lived in this region from stone age time... ZA

Beautiful video. This is my theory, I think that malay is not a race, but the culture and the state of mind of the austronesian people living in the malay peninsula. Before the malaccan sultanatte in 15th century there were multiple groups of austronesians living in the peninsula speaking all sorts of language, including orang lauts(other e.g include dayak ppl). They were also different religions such as islam, folk, and hindu-buddhism. During the sultanate, the kingdom instilled a malay culture, which included establishment of the malay language and islam as the religion. So this culture connected the different austronesian groups in the peninsula. The culture become so established that austronesians from other areas like java and bawean who migrated here assimilated into the malay culture. My guess is that the different orang asli still present in the peninsula did not assimilate into the culture. This is especially for the orang laut who spent most of their time in the sea and not in the bustling city area so it make sense for the lack of assimilation. To say that malay ppl invaded the peninsula and the orang asli is completely wrong. Tho that being said, it doesnt mean that we do not have to neglect these ppl as they are still our brothers and sisters and we should protect them

restu mumpuni As far as I know, it's a malay word derived from arabic word "ilm" that means literally "knowledge". But in this context I think the meaning is "metaphysics" or simply; "magic".

Mereka masih melayu.. Ingat orang asli tu semua sama kah? Orang asli tu ada 19 suku kaum yg berbeza.. Dalam 19 suku kaum tu, mereka dibahagikan kepada 3 pecahan : - Semang/negrito - sakai/senoi - melayu tua/proto malay Orang asli suku kaum seletar kat atas ni di dalam kumpulan "melayu tua/proto malay".. Mengikut teori barat melayu terbahagi kepada 2 iaitu : 1) deutro malay / melayu modern - orang2 melayu kita sekarang la.. 2) proto malay / melayu tua - dimasukkan kedalam orang asli

Seletarians are not Malays, they're just one of the Malayic peoples like Kerinchis, Talang Mamaks, etc. They're among the first-wave Hesperonesians, which means they exist much earlier than the ethnic Malays which only emerged since the Malaccan Sultanate initiated the contemporarily modern-day Malays.
