This movie was exceptional. Half the theater were in tears at the end. The first act did a great job of building that mother/son bond and getting the audience emotionally invested in the movie. Big shout out to 6 year old Terry for pulling heartstrings. The cast was phenomenal. The score was epic. This was definitely award worthy. So far, movie of the year!!!

I was raised by a single Black mom as well, so I connected w/the story right off the bat let alone the synopsis. Teyana Taylor has a bright future ahead of her with acting. A.V. Rockwell had a great directorial debut. Great review!

I enjoyed the film today up until the ambiguous ending 😒 I also agree about them not expounding on the relationship with Lucky and Terry. I give it an 8/10. I told my friends to support it. I hope the rumors are true and that Teyana Taylor gets nominated at least for an Oscar…shoot, I hope the baby Terry gets recognized as well. The little boy actor did phenomenal as well. 🖤🖤🖤

I had to see this twice and I noticed the second time, that when "Lucky" said to "Inez" .. "You gonna have to tell him what REALLY happened cuz he's gonna start asking questions": (paraphrazing) this was hinting that Terry was indeed abducted

I remember being scared to watch this one at the festival, but I'm so happy I did. I loved how it showcased another layer of the black experience that wasn't only relegated to misery and struggle. I'm so glad you gave this one a chance, man. I am in total agreement with your thoughts, and we even had the same score. Can't wait to see what's up next for A.V. Rockwell! 👏👏👏

I loved this movie with every fiber in my being. I was just trying to watch something while I ate my food, and I ended up with this masterpiece 🥹 a story of two people who wanted to find a home within each other with all of the chaos going on around them. Can’t give this performance ENOUGH flowers.

Just watched this today. The score was exceptional. Like a more subtle Spike Lee, that enhanced everything. Inez/Taylor was great and read true to a NYC human at that time which is often missed with other NY led casts. 2 things were so very profound to me - when Inez said that damaged people don’t know how to love one another - very apt but not for lack of trying - and that nobody loves Black women well aside from other black women - and as a gut punch - not that it doesn’t happen but that I’ve certainly found community with other black women in a way I haven’t found it elsewhere.

Hey Sir El, I also dug how the Teyana character evolved as a character by making a way for her son to have a stable home and father figure, though temporarily in their life. I felt it was a celebration of what single Black mothers are willing to do to sustain their family. The twist in the 3rd act took me by surprise too. My only criticisms are that I wish we had more light on Teyana during her vulnerable moments and that there were several scenes in the 1st and 2nd acts that were slow. I fought hard to stay engaged during those times. Thanks for sharing your intelligent review as always!

I saw it in theaters and am a little "meh" on it. The premise sounded really cool: Woman kidnaps kid and tries to live as family while evading authorities. Sounds pretty sweet. I mean that is what we got, but it was more mundane and protracted than I expected. The progression was more "this happens, then that happens, then this happens...." and so on. There wasn't much in the sequence of events that made me feel like I was in the beginning, middle or latter part of the story. It's the same problem I had with Tar where it's a deep character study, but I can't follow where where the story is going. I felt like there was supposed to be a beginning and ending that wasn't shown to us because it started and stopped at a weird spot with more to be desired. Is this film mostly made for kind folks such as yourself who identify with it, or is it just me?

It was a beautiful film overall, but I was more concerned about the boy's life rather than the flawed mother, which was probably the intent, since she said she wanted to save him and give him a life she never had or something to that she needed him more than he needed her. I was bawling in the end in a theater in plastic LA. I loved the black father role model theme. I don't think killing him off with cancer contributed to the plot. They could have broken up because of his cheating or something, the writer does have issues with men, so maybe it came out that way. Anyway, as a budding filmmaker, I don't think I want my audience to feel the way I did when I left the theater. It was a beautiful film, but very unsettling. I'm pleased that I saw it to be able to participate in the conversation, but I wouldn't see it again.

I am very conflicted about the movie. Teyana, Will, Aaron, and Aven did an outstanding job. I was not feeling Josiah (high school) Terry at all. His emotions did not ring true to me and the so-called confrontation between Teyana and him once he found out she was not his mom was cringy to watch for me. His ability to evoke trauma, heartache and even tears was horrible and unbelievable. I think when a movie tries to cover so many themes at one time, they miss the opportunity to really go deep into the plot of the film. My husband and I debated about what the ending of the movie meant. I think she felt that even with all her flaws and short comings she was able to raise a young man who will go out into the world and do wonderful things. But I also feel that the way the teen-age Terry played his role he was giving broken, fragile, and ill equipped to navigate what life is going to throw at him. The plot twist at the end that she was not his mom made the movie even more disappointing to me because she let him down repeatedly throughout the film and this was her last act of betrayal.

Actually he was just like the people who raised him. They showed no emotion (except during their fights),pretended that everything was normal , secretive, lacking order, confidence, he was use to people being passive aggressive, dysfunctional household, and he was physically and emotionally abused. He is just as broken if not more mentally than his abductors and his whole life was a lie and now he is running away from help because he believes help is the problem. She believes she won and she is still a Thief that just stole his chance at a healthy life. She never tells him she loves him at the end and smiles in the back of a cab because she finally has what she wanted(someone who will care and need her because they are lost/stolen So in her twisted mind she won.
