It's quite strange to hear Serena's former coach insisting on more top spin and higher balls. This was precisely her "weakness" (if you can say she had one). I guess she could learn with him to play like that with less risk in certain situations even though it was not natural and it helped her to win so many titles.
@tennisbrothers
2 жыл бұрын
I think its very individual to the person of course as well , for me he saw an opportunity for spin to play a crucial role in developing my game, to help me open up more angles etc...
@chrisak49
2 жыл бұрын
I feel Patrick insisting on Serena playing with more topspin has ruined her game. Her relatively flat shots helped her end points fast. Now a days she's hitting too much top spin and not through the ball which extends the points too much. Think of it like how Andy Roddick had a monster forehand up to 2005 until he added too much loopy topspin.
@thebigmonstaandy6644
2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisak49 i had the same problem.if tryed to play high above the net,and i started to miss the ball and my opponents start to attack me.
@gavinfindlay3263
2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisak49 hmm I would disagree. I think the extra topspin especially on her forehand was what allowed Serena to be so consistent in 2012-2016, and especially led to her dominance on clay in that period as she could build points much better by varying the spins and angles. It's maybe more of an issue now as she's no longer anywhere near as good a mover as she was, so maybe would be beneficial to still hit as flat and end the points quicker
@chrisak49
2 жыл бұрын
@@gavinfindlay3263 She is using the reverse (overhead) forehand follow through more from 2018-2021 to generate topspin which makes her forehand less penetrating vs 2012-2016. If you watch a video of Serena 2012 versus 2020 you'll see she used to never hit her forehands with reverse follow through as much
