Not bc it was scary per se but bc it was based on real crimes committed, Memories of Murder. It is my belief that reality is always scarier than fiction. On a lighter note, I thoroughly enjoy your take on films but most notably Korean especially Burning, a true masterpiece. I wish you all the success you choose to embrace.

I think a big part of a tale of two sisters' scariness is that it keeps escalating, and escalating- and then instead of ending, everything just falls apart at the seams. A family is broken, su-mi's identity is broken. Su-yeon is dead, and Eun-ju may or may not be being targetged by a ghost. I can almost describe it as a train wreck that you can't look away from in a good way, except YOU are on the train.

"slow burn" horror is always slept on

I noticed how the film focused on Red, green, and brown when I first watched it, I thought it was using the color palette to clue the audience in to what was going on- vibrant colors for when the main character is in the middle of her delusions, and then brown, dull tones for when we return to reality. It's interesting to hear your take on how the symbolism of color goes even further.

@@sadhoneychilli_emilia when soo-min was about to check out the noise from soo-yeon's room, she came across the stepmother and told her to get out of her way in anger, the stepmother told her she 'might regret this moment'. Yeah, it's no illusion. The stepmother is evil after all.

Mate I don't know if the movie is just that scary or if it's just a testament to your video editing skills, but this video ITSELF is terrifying

No bro that movie was indeed pretty scary. It builds a lot of tension and anxiety in many moments, has an unsettling atmosphere. And just when you think you understand the whole situation, they show that something was really there all along (the ghost of the protagonist sister actually exists). It reminds me when I was young and tried playing Fatal Frame 3. The first section actually involves you in a nightmare, but what really got me is when you wake up, the entire house is empty, there's no music, no one is there, only you and the subtle sound effects...well, until I saw a feet from a ghost in the bathroom. I shut off my PS2 immediately after that.

Watched this back when I was with a very bad friend group. Like guys that you should not spent your time together. However, I will never forget the sight of 5 criminals covering their eyes with their hands for halve of the movie because they were scared out of their bodies

That one jumpscare in the kitchen was so scary....

Do you know about a movie where it’s this scene of this seemingly normal family going about their business in the morning. They’re eating breakfast, talking about there lives. They’re just living. Then they get a knock on the door, and when the dad answers, he immediately gets killed with a shotgun blast. The killer then goes in and kills the mom in the kitchen, with the little girl going and hiding in her room, hearing the chaos outside her door and the older brother doing the same. The killer then goes into the girls room and kills her violently, very violently. She then finds the brother, stares at him for a moment, him cowering in fear, just sits there staring back. She then kills him. The scene is very brutal and I remember watching a video about it but I can’t find it anymore and was wondering if you possible knew about the movie. If so, what is it called and could you possible make a video on it if you haven’t already. This movie is considered to be very brutal and to be shortly draw dropping in the way the directors portray that brutality. Anyway thank you for making all these cool ass videos and thanks to you, I don’t have to actually watch the movie, I can just watch your vids. It’s still creepy and scary as hell but at least I can get through it

Bro watched an analysis of a film he hasn't watched WHAT🥸

one of my favourite movies ever. the ending left me with so much anger and sadness, i was disturbingly overwhelmed for like a week.

This movie is truly a roller coaster of emotions. I was scared, confused, angry.. all of it at the same time. Some scenes had me legit screaming out loud. Great video as usual, I was looking forward to this one!

this is one of my favorite movies. not because it’s incredibly scary for me, but because it is just so uncomfortable and disturbing the entire way through without being incredibly gruesome till way later in the film (at least from my recollection-it’s been a while). i never forgot this film, but i’ve been too anxious to revisit it. it gives me an interesting perspective on hereditary, as I see the deep influences this film has had on a lot of our current fantastic, soon-to-be classic horror pieces. this is true horror, as it is full of dread and truly grounded in reality.

My favorite movie ever. I’ve watched it too many times to count since I first saw it 14 years ago. The acting, the production design, the twist in the middle of the movie, the MUSIC? Nothing will ever top it.

The scenes are soooooo dark, my old eyes couldn't see most of this! But EXCELLENT analysis (as always)

Spikima, here's something else I noticed that contributes to the overall anxiety the movie gives us. Many key shots were intentionally unbalanced - like the one you showed where Eun-joo/Soo-mi was taking off her lipstick. The left-hand mirror is smaller than the right-hand mirror, is set lower down, and even shows a different view when the father walks into the room. There are other shots where 1/4 or 1/3 of the view is blocked by a wall or door, or where the characters are positioned off-center of the frame. I think this gives viewers a sense that we're missing something important, and that ramps up the anxiety.

I watched this film as a young child and did not understand it. It was scary (su-yeon's cabinet scene was esp terrifying for me) but the scenes were beautiful and i was hooked. In the end, i remember how, after all the scares, i was left feeling more sad than frightened. I did not understand but i knew the two sisters loved each other very much. Beautiful film; may watch it again. Happy to have stumbled upon your channel; love your videos!

Have to agree with you about A Tale Of Two Sisters leaving you more sad then frightened by the end. It does have a few creepy moments, but i always found it to be more of a tragedy then a horror movie. The reveal as to why the sisters have been experiencing all of these strange occurrences since they came home, is so utterly heartbreaking that the first time you watch the movie it feels like a punch to the gut, & haunts you long after you've watched the movie.

AH! I always knew there was something special around this movies vibe but it never appeared to me with the colour selection. thanks for pointing those out!

Watched this film with my friends in discord at night. It had us discussing for nearly an hour and kept us up all night.

I first saw this movie 12 years ago. I don't even remember if I've seen it again, yet I still remember everything about the film. A movie that holds such a lasting impression has clearly done a lot right. And I generally hate "horror" movies. This movie is one of the movies I think of when it comes to color usage, along with Lady Vengeance (another amazing Korean film) and Sin City.

YES! Thank you for doing a video on this film. It's my favorite horror film of all time, it's psychologically interesting, emotional (especially at the end), and has incredibly unsettling horror elements. Such an underrated film.

This movie absolutely horrified me, then left me feeling incredibly depressed when it was over. Absolutely amazing filmmaking, definitely in my Top 5 horror films of all time.

"A Tale of Two Sisters" is definitely one of the most underrated horror movies because it's a movie that is very subtle with how it handles their ghost story. It's personally one of my favorites from korean cinema because to me, I don't see it as a horror movie because a majority of the film feels more like a psychological drama with elements of horror. The ghost story traits and the bright vibrant colors serve as distractions from the real horror underneath; that the grief over losing a sister broke Su-Mi's mind that she can't handle the complexness of reality nor could she move past losing a loved one, so she puts the blame on others, but not herself who should be responsible for not being there to help her sister.

Yuss thank you! This is by far the most terrifying, disturbing yet beautifully artistic film I've ever seen :)

I just found your channel. Thank you so much for doing a tale of two sisters. This has been my favorite horror film since I first saw it when it released on dvd in America forever ago. This film does not get the recognition it deserves.

I actually started watching this film a year ago but stopped because it was so damn terrifying. But when I saw that you're gonna make a video on it, then I knew I needed to watch it again from the top lol. And boy was it worth it, the closing scene and the haunting score that goes along with it ties it all up!

Yeah that bedroom nightmare scene is the scariest thing I've ever seen! The visual doesn't even have to be grotesque for it to be horrifying! The atmosphere creates it to be unbearable! The shot of "the ghost" on the bed hovering is a fucking nightmare fuel (that's my Kairo moment istg)! And that's just a portion of horror the movie offers! I still like to think myself someone who doesn't scare easily but damn this movie fucked me up. It's been like 10+ years but this is the movie I haven't been able to revisit!

I have been telling everyone I know since 2003 this movie is a must watch. When I’m asked to name my top films all time this ALWAYS makes the list. Amazing breakdown 🙏🏼

I didn't find it scary, rather sad. Really sad. Sumi is so broken it honestly made me feel depressed. And the way everything is set up just hurts physically. Her father also, what a strong man, seeing his daughter on that state and trying his best. Man, didn't cry but felt shattered for a couple months. Amazing movie tho. Great plot twists, storytelling, scenery and rendering. Just perfect. For me, its unmached. A unique movie. Made me feel things i didn't even know i could

Ohh, I remember trying to watch this when I was younger, and I didn't finish it because I've never felt so anxious about a horror film before. I'm gonna watch it now, I'll be back for your analysis. Edit: My favorite Korean horror/drama film is "Kim Bok-nam salinsageonui jeonmal" or "Boknam Rises". I still constantly think about that film and how it broke me.

Ha..., even as native Korean speaker, i had to watch few times to understand what really happened at the end. Depth of twist was somewhat unpredictable, very well made horror movie.

Great explanation, especially the idea of mise en scène.

I also like how this horror film was like a fairy tale. Based on a Korean folk tale it definitely gave off a olde worldly fairy tale vibe. I definitely put it up there with pans labyrinth 💖🌸

The most scary/unsettling thing for me in this movie is the wallpapers and clours of house nd furniture, narrow alleys in the house. It was making me feel sort of claustrophobic. Any sane person will start to feel weird in this house. It is a great movie but sometimes I felt the scenes were moving very slow for me.

This is my favorite psychological horror movie ever. Actually, I'd probably say it's my favorite movie in general. It really is a masterpiece. I loved it my first time watching, but what really made it so special was that on my second and even third watch I was finding new things to appreciate about the film. The colors, for example, are something I didn't really notice until that third watch and it elevated it even more in my mind because of that attention to detail. The thing that makes this movie so chilling, though, is that people actually live this. That's where the horror comes from for me. As somebody who's lived through trauma, I know what it's liked to get lost in my own head. To imagine a world and see it as reality. And I'm no stranger to regret, which is also prevalent as a theme here, too. You start out trying to make a fantasy where everything is better, but your regret taints it into your own form of torment because subconsciously you think you deserve it. Sorry about the tangent, this movie just really gets to me. Masterpiece may be a word that's overused, but in my opinion it really does fit this film. Thank you for the video!

This was my favorite Korean movie. It was got me into Korean movies altogether

I saw this flim when I was 10 it was Sunday afternoon and I watched it with my cousins and sisters I still remember everything and how we watched it with our eyes covered with our hands even it was daylight it's still scary. I'm just glad someone made an analysis about this film.

I love the piano themes for this movie. I'm not a fan of horror films but this is one of the horror films I loved. I even had my hair cut like Su Yeon 😅 on the side note it's a heartbreaking plot twist

Less jump-scarey but more in the territory of revived childhood fears and the uncanny valley: The Conjuring 2 and the fourth season of Stranger Things. The mood in that season reminds me of some nasty nightmares, my younger self had.

Watched this movie with my bro last month and was scared the entire time. Didn’t really understand much, and not my favorite film. But scary? Yes.

Its funny the lead actress in suckerpunch was also the star of the US remake of this (The uninvited) and basically plays the same character in both.

Just to think, this movie, Oldboy and Memories of Murder were all released in the same year. Really the most inpressive year for korean cinema imo

Have you seen Ghost Actress, directed by Hideo Nakata? That movie had me unsettled during the duration of the films running time, and the scene at the end made by blood run cold and I had massive chill bumps break out on my legs.
