What's Going on With Shipping?
July 9, 2024
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - a maritime historian at Campbell University (@campbelledu) and former merchant mariner - discusses his paper at the Kiel International Seapower Symposium on how the fight against commercial shipping in the Black and Red Seas could impact a future conflict on the world's oceans.

Sal, your life is fascinating.
So happy for you getting to share information and other discussions. So proud of you being recognized as someone worth sharing conversation with. Just smiles for me. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤❤love
best channel ever for shipping i was able to show my husband how convoluted shipping is as he was about to invest in some odd company. TY

Welcome to Germany - I am a keen fan ever since the Red Sea crisis started and live not too far away in Bremen!
I started watching your channel for the excellent information on a subject I'd never thought of much before. If I ever stop it will be because I had to enter AA.
Great rundown Sal, much appreciated. I've lived in Ukraine a decade (Ukrainian wife) and I only found out about your chan when Ward Carroll suggested his viewers sub to yours. Been a faithful viewer ever since. I'm mostly an aerospace fan, but ships (and trains) also interest me greatly. Engineering marvels that move a lot of tonnage. I'll give you some help with "Novorossiysk" - you pronounced it "Novo-risk" - no big deal, I'll give you some phonetics to improve that - NOR--VOR-ROW-SISK - say that quickly and you'll be close enough! 😉👍

Oh, wow, the Mt. Whitney. Spent a couple days aboard many years ago. Increased my appreciation of Navy personnel, but also confirmed that sea life (living off whatever fits under your bunk) was not for me.
Thanks for sharing some of you social life, featuring some young people, and best of all your analysis of what is happening in red and black sea
So cool! Sal in Kiel with that great refreshing cold tea 😊
Glad you were on a weird ship and on board the ship. Also getting a tour and really having a great time. Good for you! Your presentation must have been fascinating!

Surprisingly amazing content. I have been aware of the shipping/import process through my own manufacturing business while at the same time being anti globalist due to the ultimate unsustainability of the trajectories. I guess that makes me a bit of a hypocrite as well. I hope your videos are shown to students everywhere to give them something to ponder. Do we really need to import/export chicken and drinking straws all over the plant just to save a dime while ignoring the impacts that are conveniently glossed over. It seems that the more centralized the supply market becomes, the potentially less resilient societies become. BTW I came over from Banolirio Cheers Bubba!
Thank you Sal. Interesting life you have.
Schöne Grüße nach Kiel!

To extend your metaphor, the Red Sea has become a Black & Blue sea.
Are the Kiel Sea Power talks/lectures video taped anywhere?
Saudia Arabia was mentioned which has long borders along both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf but I do not hear any mention about them doing something. Keep in mind that they were fighting the Houthi for a long time a few years ago. It’s also the 6th highest military budget in the world.

Dang, Professor, glad to see your profile rising! Good man and I'm not just saying that because I'm an enamored para-social hanger-on. It is an interesting thing, though, I do think there will be a better 'service' to render to people that NEED a parasocial connection due to disability or whatever in the future and this strange window of persons preforming media roles better than the media is will close. I hope. Haha the para social app of the future will be like uber drivers that are couples that go on a date for you wearing a google street maps camera, basically. VR is gonna be bananas.

WW2 shipping history shows NOBODY's shipping is safe.
The Black Sea shipping routes will depend on Turkey; if the Dardanelles are closed both the Ukraine , Russia and the other Black Sea Countries will suffer. If that happens don't be surprised if the Houthi's acquire some sophisticated weapons.

Alcohol on a U.S. Navy Ship?? Boy did you get the Royal Treatment. The Russians did deploy Sea Mines off the Coast of Ukraine and some broke lose during Sea storms and I have seen videos of these drift mines being blown up along the Coasts of Bulgaria, Romania & Turkey, in one case a mine even washed ashore, and others were destroyed within beach range and sharks were not major threat to beach goers.

Egypt has to be very upset with losing Suez Canal revenue. The Saudis can't be happy with an Iranian proxy on their border (Houthis in Yemen). Waiting for Egypt & Saudi Arabia to develop a joint plan to counter/suppress the Houthis once they can do so without being called anti-Palestinian.

Historically, hasn’t Russia always pushed to have access to warm weather ports to speak in general? This has been non-negotiable for them as a country. Early in the war we were all horrified that the Russians were destroying the infrastructure of Ukraine and shipping all of the heavy equipment home. Russia isn’t honest. The Ukraine war is an illegal Russian land grab.
Of course your tie has camels on it.
Setting up millions of people to depend on food grown in other countries isn't short sighted and cruel at all.
Military surface vessels are a thing of the past. Russia (or perhaps Ukraine/Nato) proved this. I am sure many people think the Russia Navy is inept but the fact of the matter is that any Navy is going have extreme trouble in a peer to peer fight. Air and sea based drones, missiles (hypersonic) and of course satellites... In WW2 even just finding an Aircraft carrier was difficult. But if I had to guess we now all know where each others capital ships are at all times using satellites.. perhaps extended cloud cover could maybe help you evade satellites but the tech might exist to keep track of a 200 million pounds floating in an ocean even with cloud cover. And you can also flood the ocean with sensors and get real time data if a huge wake is being thrown up by something.
