A Symphony For Akira Toriyama | By Gladius

Музыка

A LITTLE BIT OF MY STORY:
Now that I've had time to stop crying, I've been thinking about why I feel the way I did and still do about Akira Toriyama's masterpiece, Dragon Ball. And honestly, it's hard to put into words. I don't know exactly what happened in my childhood that created the perfect conditions for me to discover Dragon Ball and be so captivated by its story. I suppose I found some kind of refuge in it; seeing the legend of the Super Saiyan come true showed me the potential of transformation in the face of all that is hopeless.
In my adult life, when I needed it the most, it came back to me, through the music. Four years ago I had a psychosis, at 28 years old. My mind was on the verge of coming apart, and I thought I was going to lose my grip on reality all together. I was in Egypt at the time, 10000 miles away from home. Earlier I had cached the DBZ Soundtrack on my Spotify, and I played SSJ Transformation from Faulconer Productions off my phone while I was in the shower, feeling like the demons were coming for me. In my head, it was like I was standing on an island, staring down Frieza, and the only way to move forward was to transform. It helped me, maybe even saved me from this darkness that was emerging within me.
Having thought about it immensely since then, I believe that stories live inside us, we model ourselves after them and they guide our own story. When I was afflicted by my psychosis, my ability to recognize patterns increased dramatically, as well as my creativity. At best, it was like I had super powers, but at worst I was a paranoid wreck. A battle had begun in my psyche, and I was almost lost. But the foundation of who I am: watching DBZ when I was a kid; for a moment like that, I couldn't have asked for a better story to guide me out of the dark and into the light. There truly is so much heart in Dragon Ball, and it seems that thank you will never be enough for what Toriyama created.
He taught me through Gohan, that you shouldn't be so hard on yourself when you fail, and just because you've stepped away from what you're good at for a while doesn't mean that you can't return potentially better than before.
He taught me through Trunks, that there's not enough darkness in this world that can block out all the light that comes from deep in your heart. If you have to go back into your past and seek the help from parts of your self to help you move forward; that's nothing to be ashamed of.
He taught me through Vegeta and Piccolo, that even those who are considered evil can be redeemed. At a closer glance, that evil comes from a place of desperately trying to subdue their own world by inflicting pain on others, to reunite with their true selves before they were taught to be that way.
And he taught me through Goku, that even when the walls are closing in, or the evil is 1000000 times stronger than you, that you don't give up because there is always strength inside waiting to be unleashed. Nobody gets to tell you what your limits are.
Thank you, forever Toriyama-Sensei. Your story will live on forever. And I bloody mean that. Have fun with the Kais, The Destroyers and Grand Zeno!
A SYMPHONY FOR TORIYAMA:
I wanted to use Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku as the basis for my Symphony; I'd never heard a choir sing the lyrics with the slower version used in the SSJ4 transformation before, so with the help of my friend Antonia Brightwell (who sung for me on Broly's Symphony), we created a choir together with hers and my voice. Each piece put together created a medley, and with each piece is a different theme/s:
Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku (Izumi Sakai and Tetsurō Oda) - Childhood, Generations
Universes Restored/Vegetas Sacrifice (Norihito Sumitomo) - The Echo Of Battle
Mystical Journey (Takeshi Ike, Seiichi Kyōda, Onikado Izumi) - The Story Of Dragon Ball, Friendship
We Were Angels (Takeshi Ike, Osamu Tozuka, Yukinojō Mori) - The Story Of Dragon Ball Z, Gohan's Rage
SSJ3 Powerup (Julius Dobos)- Transformation
Compromise (Norihito Sumitomo) - The Story Of Dragon Ball Super, Victory, Peace
Universes Restored (Reprise) - The Tournament Of Power, Breaking Limits
Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku (Reprise) - Sacrifice, Love
It was a lot of work making the video and art (I like to think that the choir singing Dan Dan Kokoro in my musical piece is the characters themselves singing). But I would accept nothing less when it came to making a Tribute for the man who's work was the greatest influence in my life. I tried my best to color correct each clip too, some were a bit too far gone though. Enjoy.

The gentle, yet strong Gohan, the serious family man, Piccolo, The prideful Prince of the Saiyans, Vegeta, and most importantly, the Saiyan raised on Earth, Son Goku. Thank you for the memories Mr. Toriyama. Your legacy will be remembered as one of the best manga artists and the creator of the one and only..... Dragon Ball. Edit: 637 likes?? No words can describe the impact Akira Toriyama had on so many people's lives, he may not have even been aware of the astronomical impact he's had on so many people's lives, but he should be proud of the impact he has had in not only Manga but the entire world. This symphony truly lives up to the title "symphony", it's absolutely beautiful. I pray that Toriyama-Sensei rests in peace, and may the Otherworld accept him with loving arms.

I never thought I'd actually be brought to tears for once. But yeah man. Akira Toriyama, the Legend, One of a Kind artist and creator many of us probably didn't deserve. But because of his dedication and passion, we were brought characters, who helped to shape the earlier parts of our lives. I for one, grew up watching Dragon Ball, from 1995 to this very day. Despite what anyone would say about the characters, the story, or even the designs. He never truly failed to satisfy the audience. Taking such a lifelong journey with Goku, Bulma, Master Roshi, Krillin, ChiChi, Dindei, Piccolo, and Tien. Yamcha, Chiotzu, Oolong, Trunks, Goten, Hercule, Videl and Pan, the newly arrived Bulla, Launch, Freiza, Cell, Buu, Beerus, Whis, the Grand Priest, and all the others I didn't name. It goes to show the journey was well traveled, and though the trip has ended for our faithful turtle hermit, I know he's likely left his work, in the hands of someone who will honor his memory, while keeping the Dragon Balls around for just a while longer, so we can continue to ask Shenron....for just one more wish. Before we truly have to say goodbye...Sensei 🙇‍♂️ 🙏

I hope, wherever Toriyama is, that he sees the impact and gravitas of the stories he's told throughout the years, the lives he's touched and changed forever. I hope he rests easy, knowing that we'll carry the lessons he taught us to heart and always give it our all. It would be a disservice to ourselves, our dreams, and to the people we love. Rest in peace, sensei, your legacy will live on through us.

I can say, I've been watching DBZ for over 5 years, and even with that I cannot tell you how much its changed my life and how much I truly love it. Its not just an anime we watch, its a journey and an adventure that we will always be on. It shows us how to become a better person and to help others no matter what the cost, even if were kicked to the ground. I know that I may sound bland, but Ive always loved Gokus character and have tried to imitate him whenever I was at my lowest in life. Thank you Akira Toriyama, thank you for not only giving us a story, but hope for us to continue in the future to share your beautiful story for generations to come. You truly are number number one.

Dragon Ball Z for me is what brought me into anime, first experience was seeing Goku turn SSJ... It was absolutely majestic. From there on I binged the entire DB and DBZ, started watching other anime like Berserk and such (It was like 2007, bless the computer and websites lol). To me - Toriyama's works shaped me, from the philosophy of training to transformations being my favorite thing. Thank you Akira Toriyama, for everything you've done. And damn man, this peace definitely hits hard, tear level hard.

I experienced a lot of trials last year as an undergrad senior and the very first thing that came back to me in all its versions, dubs, and forms was Toriyama’s work. I played the the American and Japanese OSTs religiously when I ran, worked out, and later embraced training in martial arts. It’s one of the many things that inspires me to pursue studying East Asia. The meaning of his work has grown throughout the years ever since I saw my friends play Raging Blast 2. In my early 20s, I still aspire to better myself, inspire others, and most importantly forgive. It takes one man to change it all. Even if he never thought it would be as popular as it is across oceans and nations. I think that’s kinda the magic to it. Unexpected greatness. Untapped potential. Generations of inspired people. Humanity and perseverance.

A franchise that broke the internet, made godlike revenue, and an infinite fandom. No other series will come close, whether show, movie, or game. Akira didn't create a legacy but a dynasty. We used to be made fun of for watching shows like this when we were young, now everyone for the most part understands why it's the first thing people talk about when you hear the word anime. Thank you Toriyama for making a series that encourages us to never give up, cherish your loved ones and always strive to be better. Thank you for inspiring the world.

Akira Toriyama is one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to artwork.
