A Surprising Habit of Great Leaders | Simon Sinek

As leaders, it might be our first instinct to make our voice heard early and often. Great leaders know, however, that reserving your opinion until the end of the meeting will give your employees the space they need to generate creative ideas.

Simon is an unshakable optimist. He believes in a bright future and our ability to build it together.
Described as “a visionary thinker with a rare intellect,” Simon has devoted his professional life to help advance a vision of the world that does not yet exist; a world in which the vast majority of people wake up every single morning inspired, feel safe wherever they are and end the day fulfilled by the work that they do.
Simon is the author of multiple best-selling books including Start With Why, Leaders Eat Last, Together is Better, and The Infinite Game.

I think the bit about biasing the room is so true! More junior people might be scared to speak up if you've already said what you think and if their opinion differs. This way you're getting in much more diverse input and it makes your life easier as well because you can hear a wider range of opinions to then consolidate a solution from.

I would like to ask everyone here to pray for our home and our people here in South Africa. A revolution is starting and mass looting and destruction of malls and shopping centers, all for a fight to release a criminal with 700+ cases against his name from prison. We fear for what will happen next and we need the prayers from everyone around the world to ask God to save this once beautiful country. I thank you all kindly. God bless!

what's the difference? I am generally interested in why "someone who needs to get the last word in" is seen as something negative. I don't see it as a positive either, it just is. In any conversation someone has to speak last. I am never consciously aware of who gets the last word in, in any conversation I have. But I have been told this a few times in my life and I have asked why does it matter who gets the last word in but no one has articulated why that is? Please help me understand

@@joemitchell6581 I've had that too - in my younger years it felt thrown at me as an insult or something by certain family members who I just couldn't see eye to eye with; something to shut me down with, who knows why - their reasons were their own and remain forever mysterious to me.

I think it can be used at times out of insecurity (though not always). Some feel they have to be seen as right all the time and if everyone does not agree with them they cannot be happy. The last word can be used as a way of shutting anything further down in that context. Like I'm right, you're not. End of story. Getting the last word in these situations makes up for their insecurities, whether conscious or unconsious sometimes. This is different than waiting to speak last because that is not coming from that place but one of curiosity to hear other ideas first and wanting to make others feel heard.

Great advice. This last-to-speak approach will also make more room up front for the less vocal team members to get into the conversation. It gives the leader the opportunity to say, "Dale, what do you think?" or more subtle nonverbal invitations to get quiet people talking like welcoming eye contact.

There is a difference in a briefing and a meeting though. It's good to be last to speak in a meeting but you setting the tone and direction is what is needed in a briefing. Just my two cents. A directionless leader is worse than having a bad leader imo.

Like the video, and a great concept. What is the hazard or risk when someone insists on talking after the leader, even when the group’s hierarchy makes it clear who the leader is, and even when the leader has used conclusory remarks? In my experience, at best, this can set a poor tone or at worst, undermine whatever messaging the leader has just synchronized with the group. These last minute contributions are often casually regarded as harmless “oh by the ways,” but are they sometimes abused by those who just want to be heard speaking? “…Oh yeah, whatever they said is important - but remember, put your garbage bins out on Tuesdays.” [ie, trivial remark] 🤔

In practice, this is a giant problem, and in my experience, terrible advice. Imagine the leader fails to raise a topic that you know needs to be discussed, something super obvious that surely they'll mention, but somehow they don't. And they spoke last, so the meeting is over, and you're sitting there frustrated. How would you feel? Bad, unwanted, disrespected. In other words, speaking last is a way to cut off feedback, especially critical feedback, and one effect of this is that people who are upset or troubled don't get their voices heard, and trust is shattered. You could have suggested speaking "almost last", and then I'd be with you, but to suggest speaking last, wow, I've seen it fail for years.

After speaking you ask if there are any more concerns or questions.

How hilarious, another dude who emerged from school/ university a fully fledged guru....without a day's life experience, let alone leadership experience.
