Big mask backstory is really sad and realistic when you think about it. Not everyone would beable to answer the call of duty when it arrises. Now he's a hero who likely suffers from depression. I can't wait for future episodes.

Yeah, I mean... If I saw a random mask in the forest, I wouldnt think "hey this is a call to action, heave ho adventure awaits!" Id be thinking "Is this a prank?... Even if its not I would become a superhero, and that would just completely re-route my life... I would have new responsibilities and dangers... I could die." stuff like that. Though, maybe im lying to myself here, but maybe I could work up the courage. After all if its a prank, I get pranked no harm done, just laughed at a bit. But when I put on the mask, im transported to the other world in the heat of battle, no real going back from there. Its just go time. And well, sometimes you make do with what life gives you.

Realistically the planet could die out already if he put on the mask back then, even at the speed of light it would take years or tens of years to travel there, so the only better thing would be him not feeling as depressed since he did what he could.

Ofc for the mask hero it didn’t take thousands of years as he came in the same earth as before. It’s still the modern period, not any futuristic stuff. So he probably could have went there in time. Tbh it should be surprising he was given some hours to come in for the fact that they are getting annihilated.

It's because they were sincere. He looked at what motivates The Great Monster and made an honest effort to understand and empathize with them. He prioritized understanding their perspective over challenging it so that he was actually able to connect with them. The Great Monster isn't concerned about what is best for the world, but rather just what they want, which Big Mask saw and didn't assume that it was wrong. So he asked if doing what they were doing was going to give them what they really want, and The Great Monster realized that it wouldn't. If Big Mask instead told The Great Monster that "killing people is wrong" or "that rules exist for a reason" he'd only be putting them on the defensive; giving them reason to ignore him and continue their rampage. In the end, other people's perspectives are always valid, even when they conflict with our own.

@@Air21Man and it always hurts to say this, but even when that perspective is incredibly hateful and invalidating or condescending towards us, it’s always going to be the better option to try and make a connection and some form of understanding if you are able to do so.

These are brilliant. All our western superheroes talk. But not even the writers really believe in their words, they are written to be ignored - only to exhaust the responsibility to try diplomacy which our culture values. But because the fight HAS to happen, the dialogue is doomed to fail. And that’s truly horrific. Audience expects this and view the dialogue as chit-chat. Because of this, the writers can’t write a honest dialogue, even one that ultimately ends in a fight. The audience isn’t naïve - so that dialogue wouldn’t reach open ears. In this way, the western superhero movies exists in a universe where honest dialogue only can happen between allies. The universe itself doesn’t allow dialogue that honestly exchanges ideas. The audience will not honestly listen it, so the writers can’t really honestly write it. The same words and emotions would seem like thin disguise or attempt to assure the speaking character themselves. The universe around the heroes and villains nullifies any and all efforts of real understanding and empathy.

Of course, I would like to see if it's possible to talk down even who doesn't care about his own internal consistency... A being truly resigned to chaos, power and violence.

I don't know if it's an internal inconsistency at all. Just paradoxical. I've gravitated toward Absurdism over time and don't see the two as any kind of contradiction at all. There's always some kind of external circumstance directing your desires. Some of these might be social. Some of these might just be how your brain is wired. Or it's a product of both. Or it's learnt. The exact causes don't actually matter, just that they form your drive to do a thing and that you have become aware of this desire. As strange as it sounds, freedom just seems practically defined in terms of just running the course of these pressures because it creates the least mental friction or burden. People may attempt to hinder you. And your material realities could do the same, but neither of these matter except the attempt to fulfill the drive itself. The struggle to fulfill this drive in spite of your inability to truly win any permanent victory or receive validation for it is just the inherent futility that lies at the heart of all life. You can "win the girl" and marry her, only to go through a bitter divorce or lose her to cancer. Great Monster can beat Big Mask, go onto the next fight and lose the next. You can study hard, ace some interviews, land your dream job and then get laid off six months into training. This is just the bitter substance of the human condition. It's inherently meaningless and futile. And yet, there is a strong feeling that living authentically really is the "only way out." The struggle is unbearably painful at times, but as long as you choose to live, you must return to it. In short, life is absurd. Almost every major religion or philosophy has attempted to address this fundamental problem at the human condition. Most of them dishonestly turn away and give non-answers or cope answers. Existentialism does get close by saying you can vicariously forge this answer by a great act of willpower. But the Great Monster could declare, "This is my life purpose" and it still just sort of rings hollow. I've come to believe that a lot of philosophy is fundamentally broken as is our vocabulary for what I'm trying to explain. You cannot rationalize this in terms of "free will, "as I view this as incoherent and useless and I think it's intentionally defined poorly by different people to their own ends. Nor may you define it as "purpose" as that too is over-rationalizing this raft of nebulous desires you've come to possess.

Its interesting how the great monster says hes not bound by societies rules, that he has freedom, that hes not just gonna sit around and fit in, but then later in the video says hes a monster. Hes born to be like this. It's his only way out. Is this not, by itself, placing rules on himself? Apart of our social standing is how were born, after all. This situation clearly has more nuance than we first thought. While social rules are pretty clearly defined, personal restrictions on our self may not be so, factors such as sex, race, money and whether you are a monster or not are all in effect. This conversation between big mask and the great monster opens the way for conversations such as these. Not only to ourself, but for others.

I mean, most people place labels on themselves. Labels makes life neater, it makes them more understandable, as it allows us to have a certain basis to build on, rather than having to understand everything from the ground up. Language in it of itself is full of such connotations, with each word having a slightly different context varying between languages and cultures. It's an interesting topic, but not necessarily entirely important for this conversation. Either way, it shows that labels have power. Often we associate this power as limiting, restrictive, as it forces people to only be able to do certain things. This mainly happens when people force these labels onto others, either directly by treating them that way, or indirectly through things like societal rules. But at the same time, applying labels yourself can also be liberating, as it forces you to focus your vision, and guides your life a certain way, instead of just torturing you through over-choice. For example, the Great Monster could see itself as a being that only exists, with no other labels attached, the bare minimum. This puts an immense burden on one, as you could become anything, yet also leaves you clueless on what you want you should be. And so you might try to be multiple things at once, hoping to find your calling, only to feel discouraged as you seem to only be a jack of all trades while remaining a master of none, subpar in everything compared to those who get big, who manage to call themselves something, and you begin to question on whether you are spending your time right, because even if one is immortal, one might feel like they missed out on some moment doing something else, and thus having it lost forever. So it can cause despair just by not giving any sort of goal, and finding a goal and actually believing in it can be hard. However, in turn, just calling yourself a great monster limits your thinking, streamlines it. It predefines your goals, and thus allows you to focus. Sure, you might not be the strongest monster or have any cool superpower, but you will always remain a monster. You live to maim, kill and destroy. Furthermore, if you find an opponent more powerful than you, it poses a challenge for you, allowing you to think outside the box, something that is much more difficult when you don't call yourself a monster, simply because the metaphorical box is infinitely large.This in turn lets you feel like you are growing, with every battle that you survive you become better. It is also something that is self-perpetuating. After all, when you cause chaos, people will try to stop you because it either interrupts their order, or their own plan of chaos. And even if you reach the top, you can just start all over again, by teaching your opponents, or limiting yourself to give the others a fighting chance. And even when you die doing what you chose to be, you would be happy, because you died for your purpose. And when you don't enjoy it, you can still decide that you aren't a monster, but maybe a baker, wrestler, or anything else, as long as you seemed to enjoy it. And while yes, you might feel the pressure of time after re-choosing, but knowing that you now has another goal can help overcome that feeling. So you don't always have to be everything or anything, you can also just be something simple. After all, when you want to create something, it is always better to start with only a rough outline, and begin looking for details once the moments calls for it. Trying to know everything from the start will only lead to failure that one might be not be able to cope with. Even drawings don't start out being what they are at first, but always begin as simple shapes, things that can't be incorrect in any way. Also, the video begs the question on whether Bigmask fell into the trap of trying to be everything at once (after all, he might only don the mask to fulfil his duty as a human in a society and trying to wrong his rights by stopping others of doing the same mistake he did), but I feel like that would blow this comment's size to a multi-page essay.

Wow. This is great. Having read your thoughts, I feel like I have found a gem. You have put some of the thoughts I sometimes have in a beautiful way. I think they could be a truly liberating and empowering piece of wisdom. I think I will try to apply this to my life. The true freedom lies in one's constraints. By choosing them wisely, you can shape yourself into what you want to be, and no one can stop you from reforming your self imposed image throughout your entire life, right until the end. And by doing so, it is possible to achive true happiness. Truly inspirational, to be honest. You seem to be sophisticated in this theme. Would you mind sharing some book on this, if you know any? @@user-xx5kp2yf9o I don't have any specific books about what I talked about, sorry about that... However, one school of philosophy that might come close to what I described (though not an exact match) is stoicism, which focuses on rejecting the notion of good and evil as constants and sees pain as a necessity to endure in order to achieve happiness by contributing to the "nature" of this world. Some relatively big figures would be Zeno of Citium, Epictitus and Marcus Aurelius if you want to read about it more. There's also a youtube channel called Einzelgänger which also talks about it a lot. Overall however, it doesn't hurt to dabble into all kinds of philosophies! I think a good way to get to know some would be a webcomic called Existential Comics, which goes over some more major ones in (sometimes more, sometimes less) comical ways. I'm relatively new to philosophy as well, but what I know or think is mainly due to me pondering about the purpose of life, as well as questioning the rules and norms we have set up, trying to deconstruct them in order to understand their actual purpose. It's fun, at least to me, and lets you gain a lot of insight about how life and society works as a whole.

@@Sheenoharu Yeah, exactly! Plus, one should be aware that language is very context-reliant. Even if we define something as "good", it is only from the viewpoint of a certain group/point of reference, may it be the society we live in, the person referred to, people we know, ourselves, a concept, etc... Even then, the group we refer to won't actually fully represent all people inside it, and one can even argue that nothing can be truly good for one person as well. But I'm getting a bit off track here. The point I'm trying to make here is that "being" something defined by society, i.e. a label based on the beliefs of a group of people, rather than something that you defined yourself or at least fully agree with yourself, is nigh impossible, as this label is exclusive. So if something doesn't fit the cookie-cutter definition, it is not this thing any more, even if barely changed about it apart from details. However, it is easier to place yourself under a label that inverses the previous form of a label, as it is more inclusive, as, for example, everything that isn't cookie-cutter good is evil, with neutral being either good or evil depending on the situation (not helping the good guys vs. not helping the bad guys). This leads to interesting situations, where something "evil" is actually doing something good, but isn't good because, for example, due to how it is done, or the intentions behind it, a "necessary evil". This in turn means that it is easier to be evil and doing good deeds, than being good (and being evil doing bad deeds naturally doesn't exist due to the reasons described above). This in turn makes it easier to follow the definitions you have, and thus you only need to focus on yourself, rather than constantly trying to worry about whether you are still judged correctly by others. A great and very famous example for that is the more modern rendition of Mr. Freeze. He can neither live under society due to his condition nor would barely anyone help out in the endeavour that he holds dearest; saving his wife from an incurable and deadly illness. He doesn't do evil to threaten society, but to fulfil his own goals, to get the chance that no one else would give him. To be "good" would mean to give up on a hope that he himself thinks isn't impossible (yet) only to live in a society that he doesn't belong to any more. Therefore he doesn't care about who he works with or what he does, as long as it allows him to follow his hope for saving the only thing that matters in his life any more. So letting anyone other than ourselves tell us what we are/what we should be, will most likely only lead to you neglecting yourself. It is better to not care about these attempts, and focus on what is important for you, what is the best for you, something only you can know and find out.

There were a lot of fictional works where I thought "why don't they just talk to each other, maybe they could work things out without fighting" but accept that that would never be done because fighting is always preferred. It's really nice to see that it's possible to solve things by talking

From his backstory, it looks like he can fly and breathe in space as well as endure a different planet's atmosphere and gravity, and he did take several punches from Great Monster; so I'd say he definitely has flight and durability powers of some kind. But then I suppose that's not the important part of the story.

Introspection is always important Asking yourself "Why do I think that? Why is that good/bad?" Big mask clearly has a lot of regret, but the fact he can find light in the dark, I respect him He accepts himself for who he is, and Big Monster

It's interesting to me that he's marked as a monster for both being willing and unwilling to fit into the box of society. He's been told he's a monster by society, and so he wants to fulfill his requirement, but at the same time, people shun him for being a monster. He is trying to be the best monster by breaking free of the chains that hold him, but in so doing only solidifies society's definition. He is restrained by his freedom. By doing whatever he wants, he can only find himself doing what society expects him to do.

The process of getting to where big mask is def not easy, and it takes a lot of wisdom and perseverance to push forward. What a great origin story.

Honestly this video has a very interesting message, You shouldn't let society's laws, expectations and ideals effect who you are, although this may seem horrible at first glance it's really a more happy life than just living "normally", most people don't believe in this message but everything is worth considering and looking at from different perspectives.

@@Stick_and_stone i mean Big Mask says the monster Can do whatever he wants it there are still consequences. He doesn’t owe society anything and has reason to hate it, but he will have to face the music if he hurts others. There’s hope for change, like how Big Mask changed after accidentally letting the planet die, but without that change his karma is gonna get him

Im not sure I 100% agree with that. Society has rules for a reason... I feel like the point was moreso, that in order to convince someone of your thoughts, you cant just shoot them down, tell them "no thats wrong" because thats not convincing. Let people have their worldview, dont shoot them down, or criticize them, even if their worldview is insane and wrong. Instead just explain how you live your life, and how things could be better, then let them decide what to do by that. Dont force people into your worldview, just... have a conversation.

@@peanut3438 well it's kind of both. He figured that the reason the Great Monster has abandoned trying to fit in, follow society's rules, is because he's given up hope for that to be fulfilling. He said there's nothing particularly wrong with that lifestyle, but having hope makes things better.

I LOVE HOW HE LEARNED HIS MISTAKE AND ASKED HIS NAME.

I’d just have to say, I’m amazed. The first part of the video really changed my worldview and how I looked at people. These concepts play with different deep parts about connecting with people we respect or trust, and this acts as a very amazing second part that shows that there is no right answer as to go about this. It’s liberating.

My favorite bit is probably Big Mask going out of his way to get The Great Monster's name, after what happened last time he ensures he doesn't make the same mistake again.

This is actually the best superhero parody I've ever seen. It's still a deconstruction of a genre, but it's not overly cynical or gross or juvenile, instead it feels genuine and fun; it really makes you think and has you feeling sorta better by the end of it.

Funny thing, this entire video gave me a new view on the whole meaning of therapy. It’s not just trying to help you become a good person or trying to be told that you need to change, but rather to understand who you are and the reasons as to what you do. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a good or a bad person, all that matters is that you realize the purpose of your actions and what you want to be made out of them, whether you want to be defined by said actions or if you want to change them based on how you want them to affect you or how they have affected you. Therapy isn’t trying to fix you, but rather trying to set you on a path so you can understand your own life and how you would like to live.

Dude. That's actually a great and well thought out origin that is both classic and nuanced. Big Mask might just have one of the most interesting and tragic superhero backstories ever.

When the Great Monster said "I'm going to stab you to death" I felt that

big mask's low key superpower is to cause enemies to enter a state of retrospection where instead of just doing things they instead talk about what they are going to do, giving big mask a chance to reason with them.

Hearing Big Masks Origin, imagine if a survivor of that Planet showed up and tried taking revenge on Big Mask? That’d be an interesting episode on grief.

loving this series so far, its real nice to see a more realistic "hero" for once. wonder if the next episodes will analyze heroism more and what it means to even be a "good" person. so often in comics and media you just see these black and white morality of good vs evil and honestly that is just bullshit. like think of all collateral damage of hulks actions or how he causes more suffering in the personal lives of other normal mere mortal people. like imagine just being a kid in a troubled family with a father dying of tuberculosis or something and then along comes hulk smashing and whacking about causes the power source of the hospital to be damaged thereby killing his father slowly as doctors try to repair the ventilator.

I believe that there is a character in immortal hulk who has that as her exact backstory Although in her case she didn't direct her frustration towards the hulk, but towards society as a whole for deciding that what the hulk does how it is a primal thing of anger, is acceptable and it can be a hero, while other people such as herself would never be given that kind of leeway

I really expected him (Bigmask) to point out to Great Monster that by choosing to do monstrous things because he was born a monster, and that's what monsters do, was an example of Great Monster submitting to the 'rules' of monsters, that the only way out was to follow the rules. Trying to do it in a different way, by skipping the norms of monster battles is a great idea, and a beautiful sign of imagination, innovation, and a refusal to be put in a box. But, it's also just limiting him to a bigger box. Why is that his limit? He can be a different kind, a direct and quick kaiju, but... isn't there anything in the world he wished he could do instead, but he just assumed that, because he is a monster, it's not possible? What if it is possible, but he simply never thought of all the possibilities? While possibilities are endless and can be overwhelming, it's worth bringing up because, according to Big Monster, he will die soon because of that larger box, the monster box. His race dictates his form, and people will often treat him a different way, but he clearly has free will. He doesn't have to march the 'monster' path that ends with a battle with a heroes, or series of heroes, until Great Monster is killed by them. He can use his innovative spirit and freedom-seeking soul to redefine the boundaries of his life. He could study languages and become a monster translater. Or he could find a group of people who might treat him like a god. He could be a monster who fights with monsters. He could become a monster hero. He could learn science through clever means and learn how to turn squids into people, for the knowledge that can be shared or... just for the fun of it. He has no one's expectations to bow to but his own, so shouldn't he expand those? Find the limits, find what rules cannot be changed no matter what (probably rules of physics), and only then will his freedom be truly defined. Not as a monster who must fight heroes and die - unless that's what he chooses. He can't be anything, but he can be a whole lot of things. I like videos that make me thing. Well, I believe that the thing that would be greatly beneficial to Mr. Monster's life is that he needs to realize that while he's rebelling against all the oppressive rules that weren't meant for him to be fit into, he's still trying to wreak havoc just because he is a monster and that's what monsters do by definition. Who created that definition and why? What predetermines the fact that a "monster" (which by itself in mass culture is a derogatory term made to label some beings as such and telling them that they're the problem, the inferior to the society) needs to bring pain and destruction? He's been lied to and he needs to realize that any system that tells us what we are and what we are predefined to do and be, is just another system of control.

That backstory is more realistic than most superhero backstories I mean it’s basically if the green lantern or Ben 10 ignored the thing that gave them superpowers ignored the call to adventure failed to fulfill their destiny realistically if something fantastical like what happens in fiction we’d probably act similar to this we’d ignore it not believe it
