    Well done mini-doco. The Netherlands is the model country for the coming times. _Autonomy_ will become the key term for social and political organization as the world evolves from globalism into localist cooperation. Small countries are free and happy, but vulnerable to invasion and hegemony. This will be the political problem to solve in the coming age. Netherlands will be the case study in the question for long-lasting solutions.

    Abel Tasman discovered the northern part of the South Island 1648 and attempted to land but a bloody battle between the native Maori and Tasman's crew, the bay where it happened was named Moordenaarsbaai (Murderers Bay) now called Golden Bay (I can see why they changed it), the whole island was then named Staten Eiland, soon after that the Dutch State then named it Nieuw-Zeeland after the Dutch province Zeeland. Captain James Cook landed on the east coast of the North Island in 1769. The countries name was the anglicized to New Zealand. in 1840 the worlds biggest robbery occurred in the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi where in the Maori Translation the tribes were promised that they would keep their land but in the English Translation it said all the land belongs to the crown. There are a few events like the Maori Land War which was the bloodiest battle the tribes had seen due to the fact the Pakeha, meaning something like White People and is now used to refer to the European descendent NZer, introduced Muskets which gave the tribe Ranged Battle as opposed to the Melee fighting they were accustomed to. Oh yes, and the consequences of the Treaty of Waitangi is still hurting the Maori Population to this day even after 182 years. There we go pretty much a summed up NZ history lesson, which I was never taught in my NZ primary school because "Commonwealth Bias".

    - The Dutch didn't favour protestantism, they favoured religious tolerance. The majority was still catholic, but the protestants were leading the revolt and later the Dutch Republic. - The Dutch Golden Age started before the 1600's and ended before the 1700's. - The French invasion was a joned effort by Louis XIV, the treachorous English and German bishopries. That's why the Dutch invaded Britain in 1688, making it into a relgious tolerant protestant ally, giving it it's current constitutional monarchy and bill of rights, and mondernizing it, effectivily ending it's own supremacy to gain security.

    @@DenUitvreter I mean they weren’t expelled or killed but they were absolutely second class citizens. The entire Dutch elite would become protestant, and Catholic regions of the country (such as overmaas and Brabant) were not even represented in the government but instead directly ruled by the states general. This was obviously because these regions were Catholic Point is though the Republic absolutely favored protestantism

  • @DenUitvreter

    @DenUitvreter

    Жыл бұрын

    @@sebe2255 I disagree, they had a second class religion. The catholic provinces in the south were second class provinces indeed. But the catholics weren't second class citizens, there were many rich catholics, people switched to catholicism for marriage, it was a private matter. Jews were no threat at all and had basically all the religious freedom they could wish for, look at the biggest synagogue in the world from the 1660's, while the catholics still had to go to church in the privacy of their own homes. There very rich, highly respected, jews, catholics, mennonites etc popping up in histories all the time. There were limitations in government jobs etc, but segregation increased towards the 19th century to make the Napoleontic occupation an improvement in that respect.

  • @sebe2255

    @sebe2255

    Жыл бұрын

    @@DenUitvreter That is just false then. Just because there may have been some rich Catholics doesn’t mean that the group a sa whole wasn’t politically disenfranchised, that they were seen as as regions to draw taxes from and nothing more and that their religion was second class (and banned until predominantly Catholic regions were conquered). That means they were second class citizens. This is like saying Jews weren’t discriminated against or treated as second class citizens in many parts of Europe because a fraction of them were rich. Being banned from government alone makes Catholic a discriminated minority. And Catholics wouldn’t be a relevant demographic as a whole until the 20th century

    One mistake I noticed: you said that the Netherlands briefly became part of Napoleon's empire, but you didn't specify why that was: it was because of a bloody revolution in the country between Republicans (The Patriots) and Monarchists (The Orangists), the republicans were supported by France who invaded to help them deal with the Orangists, ending in the Patriots creating the Batavian Republic - a French Sister Republic.

    One correction - Rotterdam was also bombed by Britain and the US - repeatedly. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_bombing_of_Rotterdam_in_World_War_II Actually these attacks did way more damage than the German attack in 1940, which wasn't even supposed to happen. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_bombing_of_Rotterdam It is convenient to forget about the war crimes when they were committed by the side you're associating yourself with. Yes, Germans and Japanese were ruthless and terrible. But the Brits, Americans, and Soviets were more than their match. We tend to forget about that as it is the winners who are writing the history books.
