A Summary of Tibetan Buddhism's Debating Tradition | Taksal
A few days ago, I had the chance to meet Geshe Tsewang Dorje of Stok, Ladakh. We discussed the monks who were debating, which I had seen at the Sera Monastery in Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India.
Each day, monks argue the principles of Buddhism in pairs and in groups at the monasteries and temples of across south India and in Tibet. The monk sitting responds to a question posed by the ones standing and questioning. There is then a tense discussion that includes lunges, finger pointing, throwing prayer beads, and unsettlingly loud hand clapping. The monks frequently appear to be fighting, although they aren't. Their deeper understanding of Buddhist thought is intended to be achieved through this method.
