A STUNNING FRENCH CITY - La Rochelle and l’Ile de Ré 🇫🇷

La Rochelle is a lively, sparkling seaside French town with a great reputation for seafood, three urban beaches and the best old port on the French Atlantic. We parked our motorhome at the municipal Aire de camping-car de Port-Neuf which offers automated access with all services included for EUR 12.50 per 24 hours. The parking is conveniently located along a cycling route which will take you to the heart of La Rochelle old town in just a few minutes.
We cycled across the Pont de l’Ile de Ré to visit one of France’s most beautiful islands. If you drive across there is a toll but it's free for pedestrians and cyclists. The island is only 30km long and 5km wide and has some long sandy beaches, vineyards, beautiful villages of whitewashed villages, salt marshes and oyster beds.
The three towers of La Rochelle are the symbols of the city. The Saint-Nicolas Tower and the Chaîne Tower frame the entrance to the Old Port, while the Lantern Tower is 200 metres away. Built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, the three towers belong to the fortifications of the city and offer a superb view of the pier and the city.
ABOUT US:
Hi! We're Andre & Lisa! Full time travellers and nomads since 2018.
This was not an overnight decision. It was a goal we worked towards for 2 decades. We have always prioritised travel as a way to satisfy our most basic curiosity - to depart from regular life into something new, even if only briefly, before returning to ‘normality’. Normality, however, is subjective and when you travel to unfamiliar places, you lose your grounding, your bearings - it challenges everything you consider ‘normal’ about life. Everything is unordinary. Everything is important. Everything requires your attention. You understand that because you have no home, every place can equally be your home. More importantly, time is of the essence.
You can find our blog at www.wewillnomad.com where we post regularly about the destinations we visit along with travel tips and what we spend on travelling.

😂 it didn't take long for us to pick up some quintessential French habits! Not like we need much persuasion!

LOVED this video guys (am loving all the ones in France - always wanted to go but worried about $$). And so many Andre classics: "Extreme cobbling" 🤣 "We went on a massive cycle to see a bridge and a fort that was closed" 🤭 "Most ppl travel to admire the views, Lisa travels to take photos of bridges" (never mind Lisa, I get laughed at for taking photos of lion statues all over the world)

If you don't have to pay for accommodation and don't eat in fancy restaurants, then France is actually not that expensive. It's generally cheaper than Italy and it's AMAZING to travel by motorhome! 😜

@@WeWillNomad yes, back in the day we never even considered (or knew) about camper options and aires. And now I have other considerations b4 I'm in a position to head to Europe again. And now EU have changed visa options for Aussies and, well, I'm not sure vanlife is even an option (if my reading of the rules is correct it sounds much like the Russian visa application rules)

Are cars allowed to stay in those municipal areas or only campervans?

It depends on the municipal regulations. Usually only self supporting vehicles are allowed when there are no facilities on site. In most cases anything excepts campervans are prohibited

Just discovered your channel guys - thanks for this. Looking forward to the updates. We are on Day 8 of our vanlife and quite close to La Rochelle in the Marais Poitevin. Dordogne tomorrow and then off to Spain via Perpignon & Figueres and onwards down the east coast. Bonne Route!

Thank you! Sounds like you have a great route planned! Frankly, we're a bit worried that we won't find a proper summer this year. 😂
