A Stunning Dresser Makeover - DIY Fluted Design
✨ Discover the magic of transforming an old dresser into a stunning masterpiece with this fun and exciting DIY project! ✨
I recently found myself staring at an old dresser, contemplating its future.
I’ve always loved the natural beauty of timber, so I decided to keep as much of it as possible while adding some modern flair through a DIY fluted dresser design.
Join me on this creative journey as we turn a tired piece of furniture into a show-stopping statement!
Here's how I did it:
1️⃣ Deep Clean & Sanding: I started by giving the entire dresser a thorough clean and then sanded the edges of the drawers. I scraped off the top layer of varnish and smoothed out all the dents and scratches.
2️⃣ Shopping for Supplies: Next, I picked up some gorgeous Tasmanian oak half round dowels and cut them into 180 uniform lengths to create a dramatic effect on the dresser.
3️⃣ Attaching the Dowels: Using liquid nails, I carefully glued the dowels onto the front of the drawers, giving the piece a fresh and unique texture.
4️⃣ Staining: I then re-stained the entire dresser in a beautiful deep oak colour, which enhanced the natural wood grain and gave it a rich, warm finish.
5️⃣ Varnishing: I grabbed a clear varnish in a satin finish and mixed in a tiny bit of the stain. I applied three coats of this mixture over the entire piece to protect the wood and give it a subtle sheen.
6️⃣ Adding Handles: For the finishing touch, I selected elegant T-bar handles. I drilled new holes and installed the handles, giving the dresser a modern, stylish look.
7️⃣ Drawer Interiors: The inside of the drawers were quite damaged, but with some stunning drawer liners, I was able to give them a fresh, clean look. Installing peel and stick on the inside of drawers can make all the difference.
I’m so thrilled with how this turned out! The unique texture and rich colour have completely revitalised this piece.

Pretty! To make repetitive cuts easily, set up a stop block (you can clamp something to your fence); it's more accurate and faster than measuring the pieces individually.

Beautiful transformation! I don't like the difference between the wood tone on the drawers and the body of the dresser. I would have preferred the body to be lighter, but that's just personal preference, I am sure someone else loves it. Thanks so much for sharing

Thanks so much Sophia, I actually agree with you. Once I applied the stain to the body I thought it was a little dark but I really wanted to keep the Tasmanian Oak its natural colour so didn’t want to stain it. If I was to do it again I’d use a lighter stain on the body but I still love the end result 😀

This is so pretty great job! TIP measure from your blade over your length and use some double sided tape to stick down a stop block then all you do is slide your wood till it stops at the block cut, move slide, repeat, much faster!

You are so talented. Amazing result. Watching you snap off the tips of screws makes me wish I was younger and stronger... I bought all new handles for my old home that's about to go on the market, and the screws have those snap off ends. I couldn't for the life of me figure it out without hurting my wrist (and swearing the street down🫢) for 60 plus screws. Ended up going back to bunnings and buying shorter screws. Here's hoping they fit. Love your channel. Learning a lot.

Thank you so much Sylvain. The snap off screws can be tricky the main thing is that you have a really sharp pair of pliers that make snapping the screws so much easier. 😀 but getting some shorter screws from Bunnings when you have 60 to do is definitely a good idea 👍

I wouldn't buy this piece purely because of the drawer liners.
