Hey, my name is Dave Tilley.
I was a collegiate gymnast and have been coaching gymnastics for 15 years. I work as a Sports Physical Therapist, Strength and Conditioning coach, and optional gymnastics coach in Boston MA. I’m also really fortunate that I get to travel the world and teach about performance and sports medicine concepts.
I started SHIFT in 2013 with one goal. Help people change the lives of athletes they work with.

    Never heard of the equal bend! makes so much sense. Good to know as I teach recreational gymnasts I can start them well. I'd love to hear about calf muscle stiffness leading to injury - I've just started back into an adults class, but in 9 weeks i've injured both legs in the calf, seperately... I've been working with my physio, to strengthen mainly, but I know I'm missing something, I'm still quite flexible, but my calves still get tight. And then when I start running of skipping particularly, on the sprung floor, air floor, rod floor I feel the ping and know its happened again! so frustrating...

    how do you guys always manage to put out videos on the exact things I'm working on each week?! haha this one was awesome. would definitely love to hear more/see examples of the specifics you use to get your gymnasts incorporating their new mobility/strength into the technique - maybe examples of what'd you'd program for a 3-6 week tumbling progression that you mention at the end? thanks for doing these! and excellent gif choices throughout :D #shift24club

    Oh my gosh I really needed this one! Sadly I quit gymnastics when I was younger partially due to back pain (also family issues and loss of motivation but lower back pain was a big factor). I'm back in the sport now though through a college club team, we actually have a meet today!! I wish someone would have worked with me on this issue when I was a younger gymnast, but I'm glad to be able to research this on my own now. I've also been working with a coach and she suspects it's my thoracic mobility that needs the most work. I always thought I just had an inflexible back! It's embarrassing to admit but my back handsprings are horrendous and I can't even kickover in a bridge anymore, but I will be sure to work on this! Thanks again for this wonderful video 😁
