A stellar history of modern astronomy | Emily Levesque

Visit TED.com to get our entire library of TED Talks, transcripts, translations, personalized talk recommendations and more.
Astronomers once gazed upon the night sky and counted every star in the galaxy by hand. The process has evolved since then, but the thirst for celestial knowledge remains the same. Join astrophysicist Emily Levesque for an anecdote-rich jaunt through the technological history of photographing the cosmos and learn about the one constant that makes it all work: human curiosity.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. I'm enrolled at Georgia Tech currently pursuing my PHD. It has been a dream of my for as long as I can remember to become an astrophysicist, as well. It takes a lot of work, nearly everyday for 8 years, but it's a fascinating journey of learning and enrichment. It's not just about the goal, it really has been the most incredible opportunity of my life to be able to learn about all the things I have.

Bitcoin wobbled up into the start of this week’s trading session, moving between losses and gains on its neutral weekly outlook which makes it a tough decision for investors to decide how best to utilise the current market; for me it can’t be more obvious that trading bitcoin is way more lucrative than just holding and waiting for the price of bitcoin to skyrocket.

Ian Shelton is usually credited with the discovery, independently of Oscar Duhaide on the same mountain (Las Campanas). Also, plates were not bent before being inserted into the holder. The holder kept the plate bent, and after being taken out, the plate snapped back to flat again. Hubble's great discoveries of the 1920's and 30's were not made with the Hale 200-inch on Palomar Mountain but with the Hooker 100-inch on Mount Wilson at its broken Cassegrain focus, the observer sitting on a movable diving-board-like platform beside the telescope, nearer its bottom than its top. Hubble died soon after the 200-inch was fully commissioned circa 1950 and he was quite ill in the prime focus cage photo shown by Emily.

11:21 170 000 Light years away? I really thought there wouldn't be anything there? Isn't that too far to still be in the Milky Way yet too close to be in another galaxy?

Our galaxy, the Milky way, has two small satelite galaxies, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud. It’s thought that the Milky Way is around 100k light years in diameter, and our Sun is a little more than half-way out from the center, orbiting it once every 225 million years. The center of our galaxy is an extremely large black hole - a so-called super-massive black hole.

Her story on Hubble getting angry when the man turned on the lights is hilarious Is that true that the guy in the operating room started spinning him around and seriously though, we've come so far in understanding astronomy and how we study it that we don't need to be at the telescope to use it. That's crazy amazing that she operates from the safety of her own home in her private computer. I really want to learn about the universe and these beyond what is on Earth. Really, what is out there? Elon Musk is building a rocket to have people test their first footsteps on Mars. It's going to be amazing in that future! Wow!
