A Spell in the Library: A Book And Its Secrets

I welcome you back to the Library and take down from the shelf one of its real treasures: a Book of Common Prayer printed in 1791 with hidden edge painting. I touch on my Father-in-Law’s days in Oxford with CS Lewis and read you two of the greatest prayers in the book.

Thank you, those were two lovely prayers we prayed together Malcolm. I shall look for a Book of Common Prayer now. I was not raised C of E (though I believe my grandfather was). But I get the sense that it would make a fine reference book, and a book of fine prayers to pray.

Thank you for making these! I am curious about a few things that perhaps you could delve into in a future video. Could you tell us the story of how your library came to be the way it is now? When did you first start putting together a home library and how has it changed over the years? Any advice for someone building their own library? Thanks again!

Loved it! Thank you for that! If I may make a small negative comment ... I love listening to all your talks, be they in your library or in a vast cathedral, but the same problem always arises : you are so softly-spoken that I struggle to hear every word. (Cathedrals worsen this through their greater ambience and reverberation.) On the positive side, you are in great company : Tolkien was, I believe, harder to follow! Nevertheless, thank you for all your many talks and lectures.

I have now seen so many of Malcolm's Library Spells that the dear man is becoming to me like a brother! I even watch some of them more than once! ... actually, with my memory, I really ought to watch them all more than once. :-) The downside of that is that I try to give them a thumbs-up but I can't : it's already done! :-(

I just did the same thing. So moved by this beautiful video that I hit LIKE and saw the number go down by one…which means this probably was first “thumbs upped” by me during the height of the pandemic when the evening news was so grim night after night.

@@KristyCompton Glad I'm not the only one! I have now lost count of the various things I have watched only to be surprised to see a comment from me made 5 years ago! (News is designed to be grim. Have you noticed that, although Covid is now behind us, the news is no less grim? I watch only the very basics, then switch off.)

Thank you again. It's so good to be reminded of the richness of these 1662 prayers that were said every Sunday in my childhood, but are often replaced by modern 'versions' in our Anglican services today. Thank you for highlighting the pairings. And what a family treasure indeed, Malcolm!

Malcolm, Margaret Hutcheson Deaton here - Thank you so much for posting these. I love visiting your library! I have wonderful memories of learning from you at the Glen Workshop in Santa Fe a couple of years ago. I was fascinated to hear about where your Book of Common Prayer came from. Does your wife spell her maiden name the same way I spell mine? Anyway, thanks again for brightening our days with these lovely visits. God bless you and yours.
