A rather long and mostly unedited video on the repair of a Sony SLV-D380P DVD/VCR Combination unit. I found the take up clutch was damaged and needed to be repaired. Thank you for sticking with this repair to the end, I really appreciate the support.
Thank you to these people that have supported my channel by making a donation or by having me repair their unit

Where do I find schematics??
I get my manuals from
hifiengine.com (stereos)
vinylengine.com (turntables)
elektrotanya.com (many other items)
Plus after many years of being a factory authorized servicer
for most major brands, I have a fair collection of manuals.

It says Sony on the outside, but it is really a Samsung on the inside. These units and their many Sony/Samsung cousins are reliable and easy to work on. I have worked on around 200 of them. There are five trouble points with these dvd/vcr combo units: #1. The broken gear you repaired @ 7:59. I had a supply of new gears available, saving time. #2. The gear you mentioned you replaced that is driven by the worm gear on the loading motor. #3. The lasers are a failure point, but not particularly any more than other brands. #4. The disc tray belts would break. #5. There are a few diodes that run hot and fail under the metal shielding covering in the power supply. The boards gets cooked underneath those diodes, as clue. The metal shield needs to be desoldered and removed to access them. Sometime, the traces on the board need to be jumpered with new wires.

This is one of your best videos! Please continue to show more errors you do as you repair these pieces of equipment. I am starting a channel restoring older radios and other audio/ video equipment. You are one of my major inspirations! Thank you, sir. I greatly appreciate what you do and how you present things.

Before I watch the actual video, I do remember some of the Sony VHS had a tension lever that the grease would dry up and a good cleaning of the saft and some oil would bring it back to working perfectly. Sony really made a darn good vcr...! Hope I'm right...I'll see after the video.

I have 3 of these SLV-D380P that were never used with the remote controls and even the original manual packets that are in the back of the car on the way to goodwill for donation. What is strange is that yesterday a neighbor had saw them in the back of the car, we were talking about them for a minute now your video with this model came up as a suggestion for me. Some google device of mine with a microphone must have been listening.

Great attention to detail. I just donated one of these because I couldn't find anyone who wanted to own it. Of course you used hot glue. Almost as ubiquitous as acetone on your work bench. Cyanoacrylate is my go-to repair elixir.

Smashing repair as always :-D I used to repair vcr's in the 80's , front loaders that were quite thick, old orion machines and all sorts of odd machines. I didnt charge for the repairs, i just enjoyed fixing them. Yes i was odd lol.

On the VCR, it may have a broken capstan belt. Or, in oddly common cases, a Sony blank tape label has been impaled on the sheet metal spike inside the machine that opens up the tape's reel locks. Sony places their labels under the tape. People don't see them before pushing a Sony tape in a VCR. This label can be easily seen by looking through the unit's spring loaded door.
