A Smile To Remember by Charles Bukowski

The support I have received the last few days has been beyond anything I have ever dreamed of and I want to thank you all for this.
This is another poem by Bukowski and a movie filmed by me.
I want to hear your opinions and give me feedback about my work whether or not you like the cinematography and the poet of choice.

This is the original version of the poem.
we had the goldfish and they went around and around
in the bowl on the table near the purple drapes
across our front picture window and
my mother, poor fish, always smiling, wanting to
appear happy, she always told me, "be happy, Henry,"
and she was right: it's better to be happy if you
can be
but my father beat her two or three times a week while
raging through his 6 foot two frame because he couldn't
defeat what was attacking him.
my mother, poor fish, poor goldfish, poor nothing fish,
wanting to be happy, being beaten two or three times a
week and telling me to be happy: "Henry, smile!
why don't you smile?
and then, she always did to show me how, and it was the
saddest smile I ever saw upon the earth, like hell and
hell and hell and hell, and nothing else
one day all the goldfish died, all five of them,
they floated on top of the water, on their sides, the
eye on each top side still open,
and when my father got home he threw them to the cat
there on the kitchen floor and we watched as my mother
smiled

Its not a "kind of pain" its the same pain. Bukowski later in life suffered the same pain and expressed it often in his poetry. The difference, as he said it there, is that his father didn't understand what was attacking him from within so he took it out on the people close to him. Bukowski decided to keep it for himself and channel it to his writtings. A blessing in itself. But still the same suffering continues...

It is almost impossible not to be moved by this poem. A mother's love. Empathy for a tyrannical father. And the brutal reality that a young boy and his mother were as helpless as those fish in that bowl. The fact that anyone was able triumph over such hardship by turning it into a poem to is incredibly inspiring.

I love poetry, there's is something about it (when it is done well) that makes you feel sad and happy at the same time. I love to read fiction books and live in an infinity of worlds because this one is just too hard to deal with most of the time. I would read when I was in high school, especially in year eleven (that was two years ago now) people would say things like 'wow what a nerd,' or 'er you like reading?' I would often reference things and a part of me did enjoy the fact that the only person who really understood some of them was my favourite teacher. I hated being treat like I was "stupid" because I didn't like going out or partying or messing around in class, (because reading makes you stupid apparently,) and that only really hurt so much because it was my friends who were making out that enjoying good literature and the art of it was weird and uncool. My point is that: when I carried on reading in public and blatantly saying I didn't want to go out because I had plans to read, my friends stopped talking to me whenever I sat with them (when I didn't have a book) they didn't get it. Neither did I, it wasn't like I was pinning them down and forcing them to read... That type of society, that attitude and just humans is the reason I'm saving up to by my own land in the middle of nowhere and commission and build my own home, with solar, wind and water power, with wifi for the news and yes (movies and tv shows :D) so I can sit on a window ledge, in the peace and quiet surrounded by trees and wildlife listening and reading amazing works of art like this. ps. too long of a comment I know, sorry xx

I got interested in poetry in 7th grade. Our grade school was outside Chicago, and in class, we read Carl Sandburg, of course, starting with "Chicago"; but it was "Smoke and Steel" and Smoke" that riveted me. My grandfather died in a Chicago steel mill. I never knew him, but in that poem I learned about him, what he did, what he made, and what it cost. Nothing there is that gives insight like poetry. I first read Bukowski's poetry in a free newspaper in Tucson , AZ, back in the early '70s. I came to understand that world, too. Poetry is music for the mind. But for those who cannot hear the music, they think the dancer is mad...to paraphrase Nietzsche.

Great poem . In general, Bukowski is one of the most well-read writer and i see in this poem some connection with “As i lay dying” by Faulkner. “My mother is fish” is the idea and symbol which leads both of them. Anyway, great poem - sad, very poetic, beutiful, realistic and simply. Love Bukowski.
