One would have to assume that if you're watching machining videos this subject interest you. At the time of posting my comment there are a mere 14 comments, yet there are 6,900 views! Does that mean that there are 6,886 aspiring machinists that find this hack commonplace? When the Lathe (only) is your focus this hack is brilliant! At the very least it's definitely not commonplace! This certainly deserves far more that the 294 current likes! The term "Hack" carries negative connotations but I'm adding my LIKE because this method deserves a hell of a lot more!

Nice. I would recommend you invest in a dead-blow hammer though, they really are the best tool for knocking the part hard into a chuck or machine vice, perfect for getting the part sitting hard against a parallel strip. If you can't invest the money to buy one (there are some reasonably cheap ones) then invest some time and scrap to make one. It's just a soft faced hammer with a hollow head which is filled mostly full of steel or lead shot. The shot provides a second impact that helps prevent the part from bouncing back. Every machinist needs a dead-blow hammer, it was one of my first projects as an apprentice.
