As someone who has made the 2x4 vs 2x6 mistake too many times: I stopped caring that 3d models looked like wood. In the designs 2x4 = green, 2x6= blue, 4x4 = red etc. definitely not a pro, just an amateur that can’t afford my mistakes

Congrats to you & Sara on your new arrival. Lou may be slower but he at least cared if there were problems.
I have so many questions….. like why use maple plywood if you are covering it with laminate? Why do the inner torsion box pieces need holes in them? Why would you not make sure you set your tolerances right on the CNC? Like, I’m easily as amateur as these guys, but there are some seriously rookie moves going on in this one.
Just read through every single comment....dang. John, congrats on the baby. God bless you and your family. As for the video, Lou seems to be improving already in the past couple videos. Can't wait to see what he does in a year from now. Chris seems like he could use a leader in the shop. Keep up the great work Team Malecki!
Rough transition for John and viewers.

Chris needs to be watched. Congratulations on the little one but I think you gained a child in your workshop as well.
I guess that's two ways to put together those tables. Why did it look harder than it should be?
Good job Lou, had some pride in your work. Bragging to the boss you finished first with a crappy build and no attention to detail isn't exactly smart Chris. Beginner for the win.
I would kill to have access to a shop like this with all these tools and these fools don't give a s#!t about craftsmanship, attention to detail (oh we got 2x6's instead of 2x4's so we will just keep building without adjusting the plans to compensate for the dimension difference, or better yet, go get the right wood), or pride in their work! I can't believe John isn't embarrassed to post this video. John, this is a reflection on the business you gave your blood and sweat building and if this is someone's first impression of the work you do....

Chris doesn't seem to give a shit about the quality of work he is producing.
@unsanctionedchaos2994

Not a single bit. It was driving me up the walls hearing about how much he doesn't care, refuses to take the extra step to ensure quality products, and he walked the drill off of the screw head like 4 times on one screw. Oh, and let's not forget about how HE wanted to go about with the 16" OC framing. I don't see him lasting very long if he doesn't change his outlook on his job. I'd be happy to come take his place and if I did, I guarantee that I'd definitely put more caution and care into my builds.

Exactly! Chris said" I'm not going to use glue on the torsion box just pin nails. The glue is what provides the structural strength to a Torsion box.
We were promised a "Traditional build" vs CNC, but that didn't come through in the video. The ONLY thing the CNC did was cut the torsion frame... not even the whole box. And it didn't even do that well since Chris had to re-do it all. So after "I don't care" Chris got a bunch of help and parts from Lou, he turned it into a different competition than what we were promised at the beginning. And then in the end... both tables were useless and had to be redesigned.
I personally think it’s time for ziprecruiter; it’s not that things aren’t the same, that’s understood. Just too little flow and balance; it all feels glib 😞
Great video, and well done lads, cracking effort keeping the ship afloat whilst Big J has some baby time… gotta say though, you boys don’t know how good you have it, using the phrase “hand cut” every time you don’t use a CNC machine is an absolute luxury 😂… I’m a site carpenter over in the uk, and I would definitely say that using a top end table saw and track saw does not count as “hand cutting”… poor little one man band workin outta van over hear would kill for these luxuries…. Hand cutting to me isn’t even using my circular saw, it’s when I sometimes have to get “ol’ rusty” out and physically do the back and forth motion to complete a cut… not often I’ll admit, most things are achievable with a mitre saw/ circular saw or jigsaw, but now and then ol rusty does make an appearance… not bustin balls either, just sittin here all jealous of that hella set up you got. Keep it up, but maybe tone it down when you’re making out how hard life can be without a CNC… got me weepin into my beer in the bath 😂
Chris isn’t going to last… 😬
Honestly I think it's impressive to be this imcompetent while having access to a $1m shop. A true lesson that money does not buy skill.

Congratulations to you and your wife on your new baby. Fun to watch the difference between a CNC build and a hand built one and how they both went about it and the mistakes they made and where honest about them that’s how you learn is from your mistakes
Congrats on the new arrival!. Plywood in our area is now coming in at 97 in x 48 7/8 in. The thickness is also now exactly 3/4 in. All this post-Covid. I was building a cabinet and the plans assumed traditional plywood losses to cutting, so the new stock sizes threw me off for a bit. I'm not complaining.
AWWWW - Grace is so cute! Congratulations! This is a nice beginner workbench and a nice upgrade from the one I made a couple out of 2x4's and plywood. Definitely worth building when I'm ready to replace it.
The best part is Lou taking the time to build quality and help other guys. The worst part is Chris' not-giving-a-darn about his quality or the people he works with. The beauty part is the baby, godspeed with the family.
Chris seems a bit slack... I'm making a prediction that his time at the shop is limited, if *this* is his standard. Spends a whole lot of not caring about things he should have.

I came to the comments to see if I was the on one who thought this! It seems like all I kept hearing is "I don't care" and that is NOT the way to become better at your job. I mean seriously, who in the hell just says out loud that they don't care about the tearout on BIRCH PLYWOOD?! He definitely lacks and self responsibility and definitely does not take pride in his work.

Excellent work, guys! 😊 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
If I lived near you, I’d come by and work for free ‘cause I love woodworking and working in your shop would be a blast, especially with tools you have. I’m a beginner, but take pride in what I do, and know I could have built a nicer product. They should have ripped the boards down to 2x4 given that’s how the plans were drawn up. The hand cut torsion box was well done by Lou, but too bad the openings were too small. Sorry guys, but it sucks being the new guys. I prefer Sam and Jordan, but I grew up with them. Hopefully you guys will grow on us, but damn dude, you used a CNC and still jacked the bench up. Even though you built a somewhat simple workbench, take pride in your work product, no matter what it is. John takes pride in what his shop produces, well usually anyway, and I doubt he’ll keep someone around that doesn’t take pride in his work.

as a tip for cnc parts. if you make them slightly oversize. you line them all up against a straight edge use a bar clamp too hold them. then you can sand them all at once. over doing it 1 by 1 :)
Have to make sure you are building in a tolerance when you need to join tabs or inlays and such. Usually about. 015" tolerance and things will come together like butter.
Congratulations on Grace’s arrival, hope mom is doing well too ❤ have a Blessed Easter 🙏♥️

Hi John and crew, great channel! I just found it a couple of weeks ago and have devoured your content! ‘Did I cut them to the perfect dimension? Yep, I’ll have to do a little bit of sanding’. Bro, that was a solid 1/8” over width there. ‘A little sanding’ is a gross understatement. In that hour and a half you spent setting that up, you didn’t think to double check all your measurements? At every step he failed to make a successful decision and end up with a build that’s better than even my 6 year old could have come up with.

I agree I'm assuming they didn't because they face screwed the top down to the box then covered the screws with Lam but it doesn't explain why the none CNC one wasn't drilled after it was attached and Laminated.
Have you thought about switching to rumble? Guys like you would help.
My personal philosophy is that oil is cheaper than an engine! Even if the oil isn't at 100% service life it's always inexpensive to change. I don't go over 6-7k miles like you. Good video!!

Lou is the true craftsman.
Hi John congratulations bro didn’t know you had a kid also I finally finished the book
As a somewhat competent woodworker, either the plans were shit or their ability was. There is so much wasted space and way too long drill bits for top drilling as well as the lack of countersinking. I would also incorporate pocket screws (if necessary, and it looked as though it needs it). Also, who are these guys?
Congrats John, she is adorable
