A Simple Micro Game Changer - The Fresh Water Flounder

Спорт

This Micro Game Changer fly is tied flat (like a flounder) which creates a unique, dynamic and life-like motion in the water. When I designed this fly I wanted to be able to imitate either a dying minnow or swimming leech. Both have unique motions and they each swim erratically. This platform gives you the ability to mimic those movements. Primarily I fish this two ways, first on a floating fly line with a long mono leader (10+ ft.) and I also use this in the Winter with a mono rig. Both are highly effective and give you the ability to manipulate the fly like crazy. You can also see it rides hook-up which in turn reduces the amount of time they end up snagged and lost. Personally this gives me more confidence to fish them in places where the trout, smallmouth and walleye like to forage, in the rocks!
In this video I will share my simple, step-by-step process that will give you the ability to tie any baitfish or leach in any color combo you like! I hope you enjoy the video!

    I really like the up-turned hook here. Game changer style flies are such a PITA tedious chore for me. Any changes to lose less of them is a blessing.

    Are you losing them by them falling apart or the knot for the hook to the tippet pulling loose? Please describe where it comes off.

    That Sir, was a fine tutorial, I shall be tying that as soon as I can purchase those 6mm links, Regards, Cardiff Fly Dressers Guild.

    That trick of placing the 2nd spine in the vice which causes it to open up as you tighten the vice is awesome! Beats using a bodkin to pry it open. Great fly! I will definitely try this, thank you!

    Haha, mean prying with a bobbin… My bad. Why do you put the laser dub on the sides? Is it so there is less obstruction so the spines will give a better vertical movement?[

    Hi Terr, I love that trick too! Yes I was Trying to create a fly that had a huge amount of vertical movement, thus the flounder. But if you tied it in black it would also be a leech. By restricting the materials to the sides it really enhances the movement. I Really think this fly is going to shine in the cold winter, when the fish are lethargic and you can fish it low and slow.

    An excellent presentation - thanks. Every aspect of the tying procedure is readily available to check as you are tying. Vis: materials list, tying stages etc. are at your fingertips rather than having to scroll back through the U tube presentation to find required info. I wish more U tube presenters used this approach!

    In different sizes n colors it's tough to see any game fish not taking a swing at one of these. That aggressive jigging action with the bead right in front looked great. But moving the bead farther back on the hook shank could give a more subtle gliding action. Thanks for the tutorial

    Just a little critique and I apologize because nobody likes to be critiqued. You are a very thoughtful Tyer. Each step is well thought out." Watching a fly tying video for one fly for well over thirty minutes, is going to stop people from completing their watching time. The only reason I am saying this, is there is nothing worse than numerous partial views. Most Tyers from Davie McPhail to a newer tyers, don't run much more than half that time. Don't get me wrong, I really like your patterns but people are programmed on KZread to watch short shows. I apologize again and will never mention this again. You obviously put a lot of thought into tying flies.

    Great video. Question: Seems like a lot of fish may be missed when they just strike the trail. Have you ever used a small hook as the tail instead of the 6mm shank?

  • @TroutTornado

    @TroutTornado

    Yeah but it's only an inch and a half so any fish of size is going to destroy the fly! Hasn't been a problem! 👍👍

    Its interesting as I've gone the other way even on larger streamer patterns that often had bead articulated rear hooks I've switched to using rear shanks or just cutting the rear hooks at the bend. I think most of the fish I want to catch are big enough and strike the head of the fly so the front hook catches and the rear hook is responsible for far more of my hang ups. Alot of my streamer work is casting along downed wood or under brushy banks and the single hook versions seem to just slide through that stuff
