I was thinking about baby and Bella throughout my day with a big smile on my face. I checked in one last time in the evening and saw Scout acting odd. I can't believe this happened. I am shocked and heartbroken. This isn't my regular nest. I'm so so sorry for the people who this is their home nest and the kiddos in class.😢💔

I was watching live when this happened, I was so confused as to what I was watching! I am glad he was turned away from the camera, but I saw enough to know it wasn't good! I am so glad you did this tribute.

It is very sad indeed! We sometimes witness unusual behaviors with these birds, behaviors that are not easy to explain. It's their eagle world! Thank you for making this video that shows the eaglet during happier times.

I watched it live and I was stunned. I have no words and I was horrified to watch it unfold. I wished I had not seen it happening…. Nature truly can be cruel.

I could watch these precious, precious creatures all day, all night...for the rest of my life. How truly blessed we all are to get this most intimate look into these majestic creatures lives 🦅🥰❤️

As a new father, I don't think they always understand that the egg turns into a baby eagle and possibly saw it as something that broke his egg? I know the same thing happened to Tom, the male in the hawk nest with Angel the leucistic last year. It is so sad.

That's really the only explanation out there that has any "logic" to it, I suppose. I mean - I don't think there's any explanation we humans would see as satisfying because it's just a horrible thing, but they operate on instincts & I'm sure that can get muddled up along the way.

Oh!! Beau kept burying Gabby's egg at NEFL, too. Another new Dad. I think he was 4.5 years old, too. I don't think they have all of their instincts in order yet.

I read this to understand as this nest is not a nest that I typically watch. Thank God I didn't see this live. I'm sorry but I would not want to see it and thus will not look for it. It will break my heart. Thank you for all you do. I love Eagles and it's hard to accept their predatory nature at times.

Scout ate both hatchlings 😢

It happened again with remaining hatchling that hatched yesterday. Scout waited until Bella was gone and found nothing left on the carcass she fed the baby from this morning so, he went and pecked the baby them dragged it to the corner and did the unthinkable again.

Oh no! 💔😓

I was so surprised, and happy when the egg hatched. This morning when I checked in, that happiness turned to sadness. A similar scenario played out at the nest of Angel, the leucistic red tailed hawk. The first chick was killed by her new young mate. The second chick hatched and eventually fledged.

That horrified me with Angel & Tom. I wasn't braced for it twice in one day with the eagles yesterday. I'm not sure how i feel about the remaining egg. A part of me hopes it doesn't hatch & Scout has another season to mature. Then again, a part of me wonders if Bella has a way to "set him straight" so to speak, paving the path for success for the remaining egg. Not sure.

It’s never a parents fault in a passing of their baby who is trying to hatch or even when one of their eggs fails to hatch. Scout. and Bella are wonderful parents and they sure always have loved and still do love their babies past and present too. It’s just so unfortunate when two adult Eagles mate to have babies and then there’s eggs an one doesn’t make it.😔🥹🦅🦅🐣💔I absolutely love all the Eagles and I shall keep watching to see this little bundle of joy grow and be loved by its parents too. Thanks for the video and update too WingsOfWhimsy. So sad to hear. I went to bed last night and it had nearly hatched. To see this today is heartbreaking. That was very sweet clip watching Bella feeding it. What are the chances of the other egg hatching now?

I think many people were surprised that the one hatched, so I'm kind of hoping the other one doesn't, to be honest.

This isn't a nest I watch, I know he's a wild animal and it's not his fault... but it's so damn sad. there was an incident at another nest today..Hanover. I don't watch it either but it was not good. Sad day.

After sitting on this information for 12 hours, I've come to the conclusion that I'm not mad at Scout. He was obviously confused. He neded to see Bella interact with the baby to understand. I'm devastated for the both of them.

I think when one eagle or eaglet is responsible for another's death like this - or in a siblicide - it's natural for us to instantly view the "offending" eagle a bit differently at first. Some people can't come back from that, but it's not a logical thing to place hate, anger, or blame on them for doing what nature does. They live by a different set of rules - so to speak - than we do, and of course, different motivations and instincts. This is one of those things I don't think a human brain or heart is fully meant to understand. I adore Scout, and yes - this shocked and disappointed me - but I can't hate him or wish him ill-will.

I was so happy for Bella. I thought nothing would hatch because the eggs weren't hatched so often. And then this misfortune. Oh Scott😢.Like last year with Angel and Tom.💔 Why didn't Bella stay in the nest? She had to get food because Scott had eaten everything. Welch Unglück.

I am honestly just astonished & heartbroken over all of this. I can try to understand that his instincts & maturity need time, but taking the food....? I can't understand that in any way. He knew better & knows that's not the way of it. That was the part that really made me wonder what is misfiring in his head.

hoping and pulling for Scout he's done a great job as a sub adult , he made a error , its hard to lose a little one ... He will come strong for this egg I bet and all will be good for this pair

should have been the start of two amazing chicks. The cam should be turned off in respect for the loss of these two little ones. Though nature is cruel we get it. Let them RIP

The mother had taken off for a break from the nest, probably expecting dad to take over duties as usual.

Extremely heartbreaking 😭 What I dont understand is why Bella left the nest with the baby alone? Was Scout not bringing food? Most nests watched the female stays pretty much right there with the babies. Maybe she was expecting Scout to take over? Once again so many questions, unfortunately no answers 😢 Poor Baby 😢 I guess we will know in the next couple of days whether the second one will hatch. Honestly hoping it doesn't so this doesn't happen again

Scout did bring a fish earlier in the day. That was what Bella fed the baby. I think Bella knew Scout was nearby & probably just assumed he would take over duties as would be the norm. She was probably just as shocked as we all were. Poor girl.

I’m so sorry but I did check a bit of the video out and did the dad actually kill his little baby that was hatching? I’m so very sorry but it’s touch to have seen it. I wasn’t gonna originally watch part or the video but I was curious cause of the comments and this took my breath away and I’m so sad now to have with Essex the dad doing that to his baby.
