A short history of modern Japan's founding at Obi Castle, Nichinan

Continuing my travels around Kyushu this video covers my visit to Nichinan City in 2022 and visiting Obi Castle, a beautifully restored site.
During my visit I drew some intriguing connections between Obi and where I was living at the time, Miyako City in Iwate prefecture which lead me to creating this video as short history of the founding of modern Japan from the Tokugawa Shogunate to the Meiji Restoration; and how the imperial forces were pitted against the forces loyal to the Shogunate with the shadowy presence of Britain and France supporting each side respectively...
Amazingly, Obi Domain was loyal to the Satsuma Domain which I talked about in my last video and in turn these forces were leading the fight for the imperial cause, resulting in a show down between the naval forces of each faction in Miyako Bay, Iwate.
The story of modern Japan is a fascinating and much longer story but this is a brief glimpse into the machinations that made it come about...

I think I could do a better job videoing it these days. I'm much more a photographer than videographer :) But it was a very nice place.

Beautiful castle grounds. Many of the trees stand in orderly rows, and seem to be the same age. I wonder if they had been planted with the intention of being used as lumber for replacing parts of the castle after damage/fire.

That's something I don't know but it's a good point, I need to read more into the history. When this video was taken in 2022 (bit of a delay editing the footage!) my Japanese ability was lower than it is now, I am due to revisit Miyazaki Prefecture in the next few weeks so I may revisit and see if I can learn a bit more.

The trees are probably planted there for aesthetic reasons, to make the place look beautiful as garden, not to provide lumber for the castle. It will take decades for the trees to regrow if they cut them, and the place will look ugly. So they will get the woods from somewhere else, some mountain place that no one cares to visit.
