A Shocking New Look at the 2008 Housing Crisis | Amanpour and Company

Aaron Glantz’s award-winning investigative journalism has sparked over a dozen congressional hearings and criminal probes. His latest book, “Homewreckers,” takes a shocking new look at America’s 2008 housing crisis. It’s a tale of greed and corruption, as Glantz pulls back the curtain on a group of Wall Street magnates who he says took advantage of a rigged system. Moreover, as Glantz tells Hari Sreenivasan, these “homewreckers” include key members of President Trump’s inner circle.

The concentration of financial power in a handful of giant banks is the direct result of the collapse of the savings and loan industry. Until the 1990s, there were thousands and thousands of independent banks that were the source of credit for local communities. The system of checks and balances in the banking industry was set up during the Depression to distribute capital widely throughout the country. HW Bush, as vice president, implemented the "deregulation" of the savings and loan industry. The deregulation was simple. Bush said that if the buyer and the seller agreed on the price of a transaction, then that's all that was required. Banking regulators didn't have to sign off on loans. What happened next was that thousands and thousands of criminals looted the savings and loan industry. The institutions collapsed and cost 2 trillion dollars, which was added to the national debt. at that time, the entire national debt was 2 trillion dollars. The savings and loan collapse doubled the debt. The large banks took over the entire banking industry. The Clinton administration passed a provision in banking law that was meant to remedy redlining (explicit racist policies in the banking industry). This program provided better credit terms for low income home owners. The large banks expanded this program into a mockery of it's original intent during the Bush jr presidency. Their abuse of this program was the basis for the financial crash in 2008. So criminals crashed the economy twice while they were stealing vast amounts of wealth from us. They owe us about 15 trillion dollars. Currently, the criminals are holding bonds that they bought with our stolen money, so they will profit even more from theft. Incidently, another 5 trillion in debt is due to the looting of the economy by the defense industry during the Iraq War. Bottom line, the Bush family was and is a crime family, and they enabled thousands of criminals to rob us.

The brand of capitalism that drives American society predates the existence of 'ordinary workers'. It is pre-enlightenment capitalism. The kind in which labour falls under the category of 'consumables'. The US Civil War was a war between enlightenment era capitalism, and pre-enlightenment era capitalism. So was the the War of Independence. So is the current war. Another name for pre-enlightenment capitalism is fascism.

ian stewart I am doing just fine as well. "Millionaires" are not the problem - those that make a few million at least. It is those that make hundreds of millions/ billions by moving money around in a system they have tailored to their own needs by buying the politicians that create the very system they benefit from. These are people in a segment of society you or I will never be a part of, yet they exert massive influence on the lives millions of citizens through their political spending. If you can't see the damage someone like, say, Robert Mercer is doing to the democratic system in this country, then may I suggest you get out a bit more often. Bad mouthing Bernie because he is a "millionaire" is just proof that you have been hoodwinked into believing that he's a hypocrite. Baloney! He advocates for the ultra wealthy to pay their fair share, and, if that includes himself, so be it.

This man is correct, I had family trying to build wealth in a 6 family in Jersey City and during the housing crisis one payment was late and instead of just working with them and assessing a late fee Chase Bank had there eye on this part of JC for gentrification and accelerated a foreclosure proceeding causing them to sell at a terrible time. That same $550k property that they could've kept is now worth 1.1 million and because of Chase predatory practice that wealth is lost.

Andy Yan with Trump in charge, where else would it possibly go? From minute one, every nomination, appointment and hire he made was about dismantling the federal government and putting money into his and his buddies offshore bank accounts. I'd love to know why these people who commit the greatest financial atrocities never go to prison. They destroy hundreds or thousands of families, but the guy selling an ounce of weed is the destroyer of neighborhoods and not only does time, but in many states, he loses his right to vote often for life. Then years, even decades later, someone like Bloomberg completely rewrites history. If I've learned anything this year, it's just how hard our government fought to keep America segregated. This video is just another part of the proof that systemic racism doesn't just occur, but it is very purposefully planned and incorporated into our laws and regulations. This is what Mitch McConnell and so many of the republicans following Trump off a cliff are fighting for so desperately...they want to keep the advantages they've had all this time and pass it on to their children and grandchildren, all the while pretending there's no such thing as white privilege, let alone institutionalized racism! Trump stopped federal training programs this week on racism calling them unAmerican and divisive because there is one thing we can count on and that is whenever there is a clear right or wrong, Trump will always choose the wrong path. The guy is like a homing pigeon for bad guys and evil acts lol!

The willingness of the American people to watch their neighbors get thrown under the bus was and still is disturbing. The lack of laws, regulation and oversight that allowed this is disturbing. Watch JFKs speech about secret societies it’s not a joke this is real.

People who are buying Trumps' horse-crap are very strong on identity and tribalism. Bringing rational arguments won't do much. First we need to understand what makes sense to our respondents. Bringing facts obviously doesn't. Here is a quote of Fyodor Dostoevsky explaining just that: “If someone proved to me that Christ is outside the truth and that in reality the truth were outside of Christ, then I should prefer to remain with Christ rather than with the truth.”

And Now You Know You are right about the American system being under attack from within basically for over 40+ years. However, you are very misinformed about JFK's secret society speech. That speech is about the Cold War and the Soviet Union. You absolutely cannot try to take conspiracy theories and the view of today's world and go back and try to apply it to things from another period in history. I've seen this reference many times running around the Internet and went back and listened to that speech again and there is no doubt that JFK is talking to journalists and newspaper publishers about being mindful of what they decide to print because it could have grave consequences. He tried to remind them of the importance of their decisions about the information they may have access to without stepping on the first amendment or their freedom of speech to report certain things. It was a wonderful speech really showing Kennedy's humor and wit and what a great speaker he really was. Look up Newt Gingrich and his Republican Revolution and his plan to change the Republican Party using wedge issues to divide Americans and create more republican voters. Watch The Family on Netflix which tells a bit about behind the scenes in Washington and also discusses Gingrich and his agenda in episode four I think. He even wrote memos to teach republicans to use language to their advantage which basically comes down to name calling democrats things like traitors, unAmerican, lazy, stupid, immoral, etc. and republicans words like patriotic, intelligent, hardworking, family values party, law and order party, etc. He engineered this terrible division we have in America today and he is still closely advising Trump and his wife is Trump's ambassador to the Vatican. There was nothing secret about Gingrich though. Rush Limbaugh started around the same time screaming at men especially how they were being mistreated using sexist and racist rhetoric and parroting Gingrich's rhetoric. Also about that time the Koch brothers and others started investing in local politics creating what appeared to be grassroots groups looking to move Americans farther to the right, but they were actually paid plants by the Kochs to head these groups and insert their wishes into American communities all over. Reagan started the big government might be the real problem which sounded great to lots of people, but was really just code for sell off or do away with government provided services and privatize anything and everything. He also started the trickledown economics which Trump throws around now and then and which we are still waiting since 1985 for some of that money to trickle back down to the working class lol. It's more bullshit for movement of large amounts of wealth from the working class to the very rich which Trump has almost made a sport out of moving money the working class hasn't even earned yet to the top 1%. Finally, Reagan began the deregulation of everything the unions, Ralph Nader, JFK and millions of workers had worked so hard to legislate and put some rules and laws on corporations and what they could do to their employees, what their customers had a right to expect, and what they could and couldn't do to the land, air and water while making their products. Even Nixon created OSHA and the EPA and made a few endangered species acts on land and water. I never thought I'd think Nixon did anything admirable. It is systematic though and it's hard to look back and see how outright racist and hateful so many laws and regular practices were in the past and are actually getting worse again under Trump. Of course, I'm six months late to the conversation and dumped a whole bunch of stuff here, so if you're out there and interested great. If not, I hope all is well with your you And Now You Know and you have a great day!

  • @cherylalt101

Karim Nagol I think they still buy it because their news channel backs him up, their ministers back him up, and their republican representatives back him up, so they continue to buy the nonsense explanations for his lies. Evangelical leaders made a deal with the devil that he would get them their wish list of antiabortion judges all the way to the Supreme Court and he's tried hard and tax breaks for religious and charter schools, etc., and they in turn would back Trump allowing him to say the evangelicals believe in me even if he holds the Bible upside down and does despicable things. Now some of those leaders might wish to change their minds, but they have created basically a cult of their parishioners and are probably afraid not only would a Trump crucify them if they spoke out against him, but their own parishioners might turn on them and stand with their biblical hero, the Donald. It's very sad, and I fear if Trump loses, these fine Christians might take to the streets with their assault rifles or we'll have to kidnap them and send them to reeducation camps for cult members. Just joking or I hope it's a joke lol. Take care Karim and have a great day!

The one thing not mentioned was the real estate market driving up house prices. I know of a property that sold for 400K to a person making 55k. After it was foreclosed on, it sold for 125K it's true value. So there is more to this than just predatory loans. The whole market was involved in this scam to make it work.

  • @RojaJaneman

    @RojaJaneman

Ron Osga No. It’s not a scam. Not exactly. Market is mostly made up of regular people. Buying and selling. When most of these people are not educated enough to make big decisions with proper research and surety, the market is bound to fail at one point or another, given that the powerful players would manipulate them in order to take advantage. We need people to understand related finance, laws, statistics, current affairs etc. so that they can make appropriate decisions. We live in a complex world; there are great advantages and disadvantages. The only solution is for people to be educated and have just laws on books with proper authority to enforce said laws. You simply can’t blame the virus for attacking. THE ONLY solution is a strong immune system.

    4 жыл бұрын

Ron Osga I understood that point completely. I am trying to say that people as whole drove that price up. It wasn’t just policies or greed of the banks or any such thing. That’s what they do, they manipulate the system to make profit. It’s to be expected. People are greedy too, they make bad decisions too, and often. And lazy. We. As a whole, also need to be proactive, educated, and supportive of each other as a society. If the lawmakers are churning out laws or tax breaks for mostly their friends or lobbyists we have to stop them. If the financial institutions are scammers we as a whole must punish them, not just let them go scot free with some billion dollar fine. There should be financial statements of transparency of bailouts so we as people can see and discuss. Not just watch some crazy biased pundits yelling at each other on tv. If people educated themselves and put their energy into improving our government and economy instead of fighting about guns and abortion, half our economy issues would be solved undoubtedly.

Greed is such an ugly trait. Outstanding investigative journalism, which I hope will result in justice: Taking every last penny from these "Homewreckers", and putting them all into a clean, no frills prison for life. The money taken from these criminals should be used to provide homes to their victims, homes which are better-homes than they had before foreclosure, plus something for all of their pain and suffering. It is time to stop calling this type of crime white collar, and call it what it is, racists' crimes.

I lost my home because Wells Fargo who bought my loan wouldn’t work with me while I was in the middle of a divorce. Some company bought it on key west courthouse steps for $100. My home at that time was worth $900,000 I still owed about $130,000. I hired 4 different companies that said they could work with the bank to refinance. None of them could yet I paid them appropriate $2000-4000 each. Once I hired a real estate lawyer he told me all he could do at that time was keep me in my home for 3 months till I could find alternative housing if I pay him $ 2000/ month.

When the government took over Indymac Bank, they could have converted all those mortgages into government-backed loans to ensure homeowners scrappy enough to fight to keep their homes- like me - were protected. I had a decent conventional mortgage in 2003 and lost my job in 2006 and unknowingly entered into the subprime market when I refinanced my mortgage to consolidate debt and try to stay afloat until I found new employment. I don’t live in California; my home is in Connecticut. Then the bottom fell out in 2008. Even though I was employed by then, the reality that I now had a predatory 7.25 mortgage with little government protection sunk in. I survived another bout with unemployment from 2016 - 2018. It got so bad I that was almost in pre- foreclosure, and they would not allow me to pay arrears to bring my mortgage current. By then it was not Indymac, of course, my loan was being serviced somewhere in Virginia. I had to hire an attorney to get it current. With luck, in two years I will be able to refinance downwards, basically paying off the debt I refinanced in 2006. With the lower interest rate mortgage refinance I will qualify for, and if I live like a low-paid clerk, I should able to pay off that mortgage in a few years - just in time to retire a few years later. And because I like where I live, I will consider myself one of the lucky ones. God Bless you if you read this far.

How can we UNRIG this system??? As I have always said, the entitled political class and their friends and business partners win win win and ordinary Americans are suffering. I cannot stand these politicians!! From now on, NO MORE homes should be sold to home equity firms, but they should be given or sold to ordinary citizens at an extreme discount. Citizens are subsidizing these losses so they can make gains. This is why I admire Andrew Yang who realizes ordinary Americans should receive gains too because WE are paying for this because we are shareholders.

If Aaron’s right, Donald Trump, Steven Mnuchin and others must face life in prison, several times over. And, HBO and VICE will have to add a part two to close, what Aaron points out, is still an unanswered question.
