A Serious Runner Reacts to the 9+1 Program
Ойын-сауық
The road running scene in New York City is among the best in the world, thanks to the New York Road Runners (NYRR) ecosystem. However, due to the 9+1 Program, a method of obtaining guaranteed entry into the New York City Marathon, smaller and shorter races are filling up far in advance, leaving a #seriousrunner in a dilemma.
Join a Serious Runner as he laments about the unintended consequences of 9+1 at the 2023 Queens 10K when it comes to qualifying for the New York City Marathon and being able to jump in shorter-distance races at the last minute.
#running #Queens10K
A special thanks to Stephanie, Jeremy, and Young for the help with this one!

Pro tip - sign up for the NYRR Mini 10k, but don't do it due to air quality, and NYRR still gives you the 9+1 credit (how generous of them) to help comfort the unfortunate runners whose "training was impaired" by the air quality the week leading up to the race. The con is you have to listen to men complain about how there isn't an equivalent 10k race just for them.

I signed up to volunteer at NYC Marathon this year, knowing that it's not a 9+1 qualifying opportunity. I'm just happy to be part of it. I already completed my 9+1 but still wanted to volunteer at the marathon and part of it even if not actually running it this year.

Many people volunteer for our beloved NYC Marathon just to help runners and be a part of a major event. How sad that you only care about what's in it for you instead of volunteering to truly help the community. See the other comment below where someone did volunteer for the marathon to truly help.
I feel so attacked right now 🤣. Just under 60 minute 10k'er who started that race in corral G and have 5/9 races done. I'm surprised that I wasn't in the B-roll here haha.

As another Serious Runner who qualifies easily for NYC entry on good-for-age time (supposedly “guaranteed”), I discovered that there is a quota on how many such registrations are accepted when I tried to register once but couldn’t get through the registration traffic jam before the GFA quota was filled. Evidently the 9-1 program for “hobby joggers” contributes to the need for that quota of Serious Runners😂

Almost all the different categories of runners in the NYC Marathon have some kind of quota, to ensure runners from all the categories are represented. Foreign runners, runners from the NYC Tri-State area, runners from the greater US, the time qualifiers, and the charity runners all have quotas. I think the only groups who don't have quotas are the Streakers/15 Plus Finishers and the Invited Elite runners.
Just signed up for the virtual so I can hobby jog it next year 😂

@@margaretblake5051 I remember those days of the marathon line-up to get an entry form!
Back in 2010 when I was was living in the NYC metro areas I remember NYRR had a similar program where if you completed each of the 5 Burroughs Series (half marathons) that would give you automatic entry to NYC marathon as well. The closest I ever got was 3 with Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan. It always seemed to me that completing 5 HMs in one year was a lot to ask of folks. Looks like NYRR has kicked it up a couple notches with the 9+1 program.
@alphaperez

The NYRR has a couple programs: the main 9+1 program for the NYC Marathon, the 4 out of 6 program for guaranteed entry into the NYC Half, where you need to complete four the 'boro' races: Manhattan 10k, Queens 10k, Staten Island Half, Bronx 10M, Brooklyn Half, NYC Half, ...there is a third 'virtual 6' program to get into the Brooklyn Half.
Well, there goes that option 🤦🏻♂️😆😆😆
Not all runners running these races for 9+1, for some people it's just a local 10K race and it's fun. By the way this Queens 10K race is also a qualifying race for the 4 out of 6 program which guarantees a spot in the NYC Half marathon.
Honestly I despair at how many people can’t spot a parody 😂🤦🏼♂️

A parody is funny. This is NOT funny.
The NYRR hosts dozens / hundreds of races each year and none of it works without 9+1. Over 11,000 finishers in the Queens 10k (were you there!!?? did you race it?)...9+1 ensures thousands show up every weekend to race, without those entry fees those 'smaller' races wouldn't be economically viable. 9+1 also trains up an army of volunteers. You need 10,000 volunteers just for the Marathon and thousands more for other races throughout the year. If 9+1 went away, the NYRR would probably have to cancel most of their smaller races, and the Marathon itself would become significantly more costly in terms of its entry fee. Love this channel ... sorry i am being an over-serious runner reacting to a youtube video

I think that’s right. To be clear, my intention is to poke fun at how some people perceive things, not the things themselves. (Ie how people think of 9+1, not 9+1 itself) if that subtlety wasn’t clear, I’ll try better in the future!

‘Virtual races’ are the true scams of running
I agreed, I was qualified for New York Marathon this year and failed because I was late to register ( literally 6 mins after the registration opened). On the other hand others will guaranteed for entry just because joining 9+ 1. That was unfair and disappointing to have small quota for good runners to accommodate non serious runners.

This is a terrible comment. Many people cannot "just run faster" as you said, to get a qualifying time for the NYC Marathon. Some truly do not have enough fast-twitch fibers in their leg muscles and are only capable of slower runs. Other people might have small children at home or demanding careers and not have enough time to train seriously. It is so unfair for you to be so dismissive of runners who need the 9+1 program - it is cruel for you to call them a "loser." Nasty Mike.
