A series with a dedicated fanbase: Trails in the Sky FC & SC (Steam Deck)

Ойындар

Finally, you guys can stop asking. This is a first timers review of Trails in the Sky. Or Kiseki No Sora. Trails in the Sky first came out on PSP but I played it on steam, rather the Steam Deck and for the most part it was an enjoyable experience. In this review I talks Trails in the Sky First and Second chapter - as nothing much but the story has changed. Trails in the Sky gameplay, and one of my favorite is the music. Trails in the Sky music, Kiseki in general the music is just... amazing. Falcom has blown me away in that regard. Wether you played the PSP version, or Steam, this review is still for you!
" In the peaceful town of Rolent of the Liberl Kingdom, a young girl named Estelle and her friend Joshua, who had been taken in by her family years earlier, prepare to take their first steps to join the legendary guild of the Bracers. Bracers are considered the peacekeepers and protectors of order that owe allegiance to no country or government. In Liberl their guild has flourished since a brief war some 10 years prior after an invasion from the Erebonian Empire to the north, and their efforts have made peace a lasting prospect. In the course of their journey to become full-fledged Bracers, Estelle and Joshua begin to see the peace threatened by a dark side of the ruling government that plots to overthrow the Liberl queen, Alicia. Together they travel the world on their quest to become Bracers and slowly unravel the truth behind the mastermind who seeks to bring war back to their borders. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first of a new trilogy in the established The Legend of Heroes RPG series. A highly detailed 3D world, beautiful original soundtrack, and unique strategic battle system showcase production values a generation beyond the previous iteration. An epic story about preserving the peace against all odds spanning over 50 hours of gameplay, with numerous optional side quests, makes this the biggest adventure ever available on a handheld system. Always love seeing new people get into the series, thank you for letting your fans bully you into playing them XD this series really is something special and it makes me happy to see more and more people giving them a chance. This was an excellent review. Since you love Kevin, you will adore Sky the 3rd. There's tons of lore and worldbuilding in that one, stuff that's still being elaborated even in the more modern games. It's one of my favorite aspects of the series, getting to see things like technology, gameplay, etc slowly progressing forward along with the world itself. The attention to detail is crazy good. I know these games aren't for everyone, but if they're something you can get into it's a massive delight. Does the music ever miss? Imo, very rarely, but that will depend on who you speak to. There's a decent side of the fandom that very openly and loudly despises anything from the Cold Steel arc (and beyond) as well as a certain composer. As far as you not being crazy on the pacing, unfortunately that's how the series is. It's purposefully slow in order to allow the characters and the world to develop. Some things could be trimmed down sure but after going through the entire series myself I found that I greatly appreciated those slower moments after all the reveals and plot shenanigans I'd experienced. Hope you keep enjoying the rest of your journey! This review was excellent, and feel free to block me as well if you haven't already, I totally get not wanting to be spoiled even on trivial details xD

Something really important to note: the same thing that so many people don't like about trails (the pacing) is the exact same thing that a small minority of people absolutely LOVE the most about trails (the pacing). That slow pace you mentioned? It's the reason why you know the exact organizational structure of the Railway Military Police, or how you know exactly how many armored divisions are in the Erebonian army. There is an enormous amount of detail, which needs a slower pace in order to convey, and that enormous amount of detail is all completely tied together and completely consistent. World-building has a point of diminishing returns. The greatest creators of fictional worlds understand this, and put in enough details to allow the audience to get attached, but not enough to slow down the story. A lot of the logic behind the wizarding world of Harry Potter is hand-wavy, that's okay, Rowling understood that to detail how exactly everything worked would slow down the pace and people would get bored. However, the trade-off is that if you can keep the audience invested enough in the slow pace, you can pull off some jaw-droppingly emotional and incredible stuff that other works of fiction are simply unable to match because they lack the level of detail that makes the audience bond with the work. Trails is the only franchise that doesn't understand that there is a point of diminishing returns to this stuff. In Trails, more world-building is always better. For fans like me, that's what causes me to fall in love with something, but I completely understand, I'm different. It's not going to work for most people. I would never ask a work of art to cater to my personal tastes, because I know that my tastes are so peculiar that you can't build a commercially successful product catering to me. That's why trails will always be super-niche, it will never grow beyond its tiny fan-base. However, that tiny fan-base will always be so incredibly passionate that they will never stop bugging youtoubers to review it.

It drives me nuts when people complain about the size of the Trails series like it's somehow a flaw when there are literally hundreds of rpgs that have zero continuity between entries, and Trails Is basically the ONLY one aside from Xenosaga, the FF lightning games nobody likes, etc. Even those series are closer to being single entry titles than the scope of Trails. It's especially jarring that the most commonly used positive adjective people assign to RPGs is 'epic', when Trails size and pacing is quite literally the definition of Epic, and everything else is NOT. People think Epic simply means in your face big scale where bad guy wnats to destroy the universe! but you know jack-@%@#% aobut the universe aside from several towns and maybe one planet. Meanwhile Trails makes you ACTUALLY EXPERIENCE every element of said universe on a personal level, not just as a hero stopping by to stop something bad, but one who talks to the elders, the children, the media, actually gets how they all feel in realistic-writing, see how they grow and evolve over time, etc. I find it weird how so many Western fans (and was shocked when I learned this wasn't the case in the one JPN survey I saw) say how SC is a 'payoff' for dealing with FC. FC is significantly better than SC IMO. I feel like SC is actually kind of 'filler' because half the game is going to a town to solve a particularly odd situation only to find out it's coincidentally caused by some new person who hams up how EVILLL they are causing t he source of the commotion (one of the reasons why I like SC among the least in the series. I LIKE how all the cast have realistic personalities and motivations, and in SC they really ham up how EVILLL oroborus seems. Walter complains that the quakes don't KILL people for fun. Renne talks about killing people for fun, Blueblanc talks about death and despair being the ultimate beauty, and Luciolla. Well. She's kinda hard to pin down since there's little interaction with her. Then Weismann is actually evil for real, etc). But yeah you repeat the find out commotion, meet new oroborus member, repeat 4 times, and then you repeat the tower exploration 4 times, and the only new development that happens is meeting the oroborus members, who practically get ret-conneed after SC as NOT being a 1 dimensional 'death mwahaha, IM EVIL I KICK DOGS' character. Don't mention Lowe, I know he's not like that, he's one exception. People always say I misrepresent SC cuz him alone, but I'm not talking about him. But yeah, the scope is what makes the series one of a kind, and it's truly epic. So when people use the word 'epic' to praise a game, and they complain about trails' pacing, they are just objectively being derpy lol.

@@Ghalion666 It IS a flaw, especially when many of the games (namely Sky FC & SC, Cold Steel I & II, Cold Steel III & IV and finally Kuro I & II) are in fact one game split in two, where the second half has to be filled with padding in order to make a "complete" game with the same length as the first half. But why? Because Falcom insists on having a quota of yearly releases, leading them to churn out unfinished and/or inflated products. And let's not talk about releases such as Sky the 3rd and Reverie, which only exists to tie loose ends and tease the next arcs, just like a mediocre MCU movie. Even devout fans of the series admit that this series shouldn't be so padded and so drawn out. The Trails series should not be such a heavy commitment in time and money. It is not an epic saga, it is a fat, morbidly obese chump wearing a muscle suit to make himself look better.

@@Ghalion666 I disagree that SC bad. FC and SC work toogether to be a complete piece, like Ys 1 and 2. You can't have only one, that would be total waste. But Ouroboros being just a generic evil dudes is a real killer. I am not done with SC yet, but I glad that in future games Ouroboros will be more dimensional vilans.

The struggle to bring the Kiseki series to North America was real. A member of the localization team was nearly driven to end her own life due to the stress of working on Trails in the Sky SC. I'm currently up to Azure. Afterwards, I'll get into Reverie (which I'm really looking forward to). Eventually, I'll need to go back and play Trails in the Sky 3rd. It's a long read, but a chronicle of realizing this series outside of Japan is one of the most incredible stories in the gaming sphere. Enjoy your journey!

@@Genethagenius I still have about another quarter or so of Azure left. I'm enjoying it. I liked Trails from Zero better. You know how some Kiseki games are a little slow but you know it's building toward something big? Cold Steel II did this as well and we didn't get the payoff until Cold Steel III. Azure is kinda like that. It's all central to the plot, so it's still solid. I know Reverie, a lot of things are coming to a head and I'm expecting to be blown away. While I wait on Daybreak, I might as well try out Nayuta while I digest this saga.

I remember the localization struggle since FC was first released on PSP in EN in 2011, and the digital version of SC PSP hadn’t been available in JP yet. Year 2012 was when everything was starting to change, the Steam platform was perfect opportunity for XSEED to release Falcom games they published on PC, starting from Ys Origin and Oath of Felghana, and the rest is history. The good news is that Andrew Dice aka SpaceDrakeCF, the one who nearly drove to end his own life when working on SC back then, is back as one of the translators for Daybreak.

Some people will even say this series was even far above its contemporaries in terms of its represented medium. The only video game series I can see that has even come close to trails in terms of sheer volume and scale of a universe would be the xeno series back in the day and we all know how that 6-part saga turned out. It was just too big for square soft to achieve with the time constraints and limited resources they had. Think of the trails series as to what xeno could have been, had it reached its full potential, and this even goes beyond that with something like 13-14 games spread across like 5 different arcs of world building and characters and drama. Characters also are not constrained within their respective arcs, but they are overarching. An example is you first here about a character named Osborne in Trails in the sky FC, but his arc extends out to so many other games in the series. That is why some people call it the one piece of jrpgs and Kondo has been consistent with the story that he has crafted. With the “Finale” fast approaching, in fact the most recent game in the series is said to set up the “CLIMAX” of the entire trails saga. Now its rather or not you have the sheer commitment to jump headfirst into this rabbit hole of which there is no escape, but the rewarding experience you will find and payoff are tremendously satisfying if you manage to stick with it. Well all i have to say is let Aidios be with you!! 🙂

I'm so happy that you began playing this series! ❤ Yes, it's a commitment... I played Trails in the Sky FC on psp years ago and finished it, but because it was so expansive and I'm kind of a completionist, I got a bit burned out. Especially story wise if the characters are written well and even the NPC's have interesting side stories that make me want to talk to everyone after an event, it takes a lot of time. But after seeing all the new entries come out over the years and having played Trails of Cold Steel on PS3, it was time to get back into the series, especially because of spoilers. And for me it was the perfect timing since the Crossbell Arc had just been translated and officially released on Switch. Now I could play everything in order with minor spoilers. Up until now I played the whole Sky Trilogy, the Crossbell Duology, the first 2 Cold Steel games and I'm currently playing Cold Steel 3. I even set foot in Nayuta and Tokyo Xanadu for a few hours. I was very happy that you mentioned the Sky games not working properly on the Steam Deck, since I was considering bying a Deck just to play Trails in the Sky SC and 3rd 🙏. So I'm happy I didn't spend my money on that! Enjoy the series and just take it at your own pace. If you get burned out, just play something else and come back later, that's my advice.

So knowing what happens will give you an “ohhh they talking about this from that game “moment. There are alot of games and its the main reason ppl stay away. Great vid! I just played FC for the first time and just began SC (I'm taking that one slower, I think) and this really captures a lot of my thoughts. Just want to say, on the naming situation, I blame any weirdness there on the localization team, and unless somebody has asked Falcom, and they specifically said the names were meant to be corruptions of popular non-Japanese names in those cases, I consider it a quirk of their translation, where they might have been trying to convey how the names are pronounced in Japanese, but with Roman characters in the way they thought that English speakers are most likely to interpret them. For example, シェラザード (Sche-rah-ZAH-do) is just how the name Scheherazad is written in katakana normally. My best guess there is that in order to prevent the final ‘a’ from being pronounced ‘ea’ (like in 'jam') but more like ‘ah’, Geofront decided to spell it with an ‘r’, since that usually ‘makes’ the preceding ‘a’ sound more like ‘ah’ (like in 'art') especially in English dialects with non-rhotic R, where the R gets ‘eaten’ if placed after a vowel, but before a consonant. Same with keeping it ‘sche’ instead of using ‘schehe’. クローゼ (ku-RO-Ze) becoming Anglicized to Kloe is another example of this, but y'know, there are probably also other reasons for that one (...) Anyway, this is something I was only able to notice because I played the Evolution port on Vita that you mentioned via an English patch, whose best feature hands down is the full voice acting for the main cast (as well as some of the NPCs), which is just *chef's kiss*

I didn't play Trails in the Sky until maybe 2020ish, didn't know it was a legend of heroes game til I bought it. I played quite a few falcom games back then, and you will find the music was insane for all falcom games since the beginning. Unfortunately, as far as your complaints, some get better but others...not so much. The questionable romantic relationships and pacing (not a problem for me personally, but for many others) will continue throughout the series. On the bright side, other stuff that you mentioned like the orbments and money system get streamlined. I also personally like the portraits better in the newer games, but that depends on personal taste. Hope to see you continue and hear your thoughts and criticisms about my favorite series evolve!!

I don't know how many of these were translated directly from the Japanese, but I've noticed that names in JRPGs are VERY often taken from various places of fiction/mythology and actual history or pop culture (even FF7 has Biggs/Vicks and Wedge from Star Wars). Oftentimes there's only a very superficial commonality, if even that, but sometimes there's a deeper meaning. I've only played about 12 hours of this game before it glitched on me, and my next closest save was too far for me to feel like going back at the time and figure out what I was doing. So, I'm not familiar with most of these characters, but I'll take a guess at where some of the names derive. Scherazard is likely taken from the Persian queen Scheherazade from One Thousand and One Nights (the book that the tale of Aladdin is well-known from - "Well, Ali Baba had them forty thieves; Scheherazade had a thousand tales..."). Don't be surprised if you see similar names to this in other games, sometimes as a storyteller, because I feel like this one has come up a lot. Even Shasarazade from Suikoden was very likely named after the same character. I'm assuming Olivier was inspired by Laurence Olivier, an English actor/director, since: he also fancy~ He's basically the archetype for what we think of as a Shakespearean actor. I don't know if VValter is of the game's version of Germany or Austria if there is one (many games will use names from their real-world counterpart regions), but it wouldn't surprise me if he was, as German (and similar languages) pronounce Ws as Vs, and Walter is a German name. Also, for reasons I don't understand, there seem to be a notable amount of red-ish/pink-ish haired German characters in Japanese media, but maybe that's purely coincidental. I'm guessing Pater-Mater is some sort of summon type of thing in the game? I'm unsure of the context, but pater and mater are father and mother in Latin. There's no "real" way to pronounce Latin words (because we don't actually know for sure), but the 'soft' A (ah) is typically how it's pronounced. I don't feel like Estelle is that unusual, but it does mean "star" and I've been playing Tales of Vesperia lately, and I'm reminded of it when I play because of the Estelle in that game. Because again, many names have repeated use in various JRPGs. I hope someone (anyone) found this at least passingly interesting. I've just been interested in the derivations of a lot of names used in JRPGs for so long, because early on in my gaming history I started noticing a lot of unfamiliar names being reused and I got curious as to why and what they meant when I used to just think it was something they made up for that particular game. Sometimes it has no deeper meaning at all, and sometimes it's meant to give great depth into that character and their personality or even foreshadowing events to come. Sometimes it can also just be a mangled translation, or any number of things. There's a lot of things to be found out in just the monsters or summon names used in the Final Fantasy games alone. For the longest time I just thought the "kyzoku" were what those pirates in the original Final Fantasy game for the NES were called, as if it was a type of pirate or they were monsters that looked like pirates or it was their pirate troupe name, like The Strawhat Pirates (The Kyzoku Pirates). Turns out that "kaizoku" just MEANS pirate in Japanese. Anyway, thanks for reading! 😄

I think the Erebonian Empire is the Trails version of Germany. There are at least enough similarities to say it was somewhat inspired by my home country. The "Blood and Iron Chancellor" Giliath Osborne is a direct reference to Otto von Bismarck, the first German Chancellor who was widely known as the "Iron Chancellor" and pushing new military technology. The Empire itself was shaped by the wars it had gone through in the past, it's pretty much a reflection of the time when Germany still had an Emperor, but Bismarck held most of the political power.

Thankfully we did, and the series is extremely popular with la LOT of titles, but for a while it was very unsure if we’d ever see the continuation of Estelle & Joshua’s story! Olivier & Sherezard were two of my favorite characters. Especially whenever they interact or go drinking! 😂 (And I’m guessing “Renne” & “Pater-Mater” are using more of a French pronunciation. Knowing how to farm sepith is the best way of getting money. Estelle and tita are the best sepith farmers in the game. Estelle moreso. On sepith up turns youll want to use estelles hurricane (or her pummel s craft for bosses) on as many enemies as possible (or Titas minigun S craft) If you can mainpulate the turn order well, the spell Aerial is also great for sepith farming. The thing about the sepith up bonus is that enemies drop sepith for every hit the receive during that turn. Hits in trails, up until Kuro, are any attack that makes an enemy flinch during its animation. So attacks that cause the mobs to flinch multiple times during its execution are best used on Sepith up turns.
