A Sense of Community: Iten, Kenya - where female runners are fighting to win on and off the track
Renowned for their stamina, strength and speed, Kenyan runners have won 34 Olympic gold medals and countless marathons. Many train in Iten, a rural town in the high altitudes of the Rift Valley.
Situated among acres of maize fields and pine trees, with cool air and endless dirt trails, Iten is a runner’s dream, attracting athletes from around the world. Aspiring professional athletes train in camps dotted across the town, running in large packs from early morning.
While Iten has been lauded as the perfect training ground, the recent killing of world record holder Agnes Tirop shocked many, exposing Kenya’s issues with gender-based violence.
In this episode of A Sense of Community, a four-part series about the challenges unique neighbourhoods around the world face, we meet the Kenyan female athletes chasing glory - while seeking to upend the status quo.

The atmosphere is surely competitive here, you go there at 4 am, and everybody is running. This is Kenya
I lived in Iten for 3 months. My favourite place in the world. 🇬🇧 🤝🇰🇪
Shocking that the Government cannot tap into the immense sports tourism potential that Iten offers. Build world class training and accommodation facilities. Iten should be an international training ground attracting thousands from all over the world.

Government can't do everything. Most of these problems that we complain about are excellent business opportunities. I get your point, but offering a different/better perspective. Government is we the people anyway

@@panafrican.nation your comment definitely tells you are not Kenyan. Had you been a Kenyan you would easily see sense in my comment. The region brings a lot of money to the country and there are hundreds of young people being poached by Gulf Countries and universities abroad from the locality you are watching on that clip.

Some of these Europeans (sorry to say) are some of the people who introduce substances into the ecosystem. Because of the immense money-making opportunities
Kudos to Ruth Bundotich and Joan Chelimo for mentoring and protecting the girls from vile predators
It's such a shame for any Kenyan watching this that Iten has not gotten the accolades it deserves thanks to corrupt politicians. This place should have a state of the art stadium and a tourist hub with it's own airport.

Surely, 60 years after the so-called Independence, Can't the Kenya government manage and support its own elite athletes?

The video is so cool, but now as Nike has the top lead group in their NN camp, Adidas is here moulding the next generation of runners, making sure everything they wear is from Adidas, meaning once they become professional, they Will only be thinking about Adidas, that's smart
They really make us proud

The Frenchman went to Kenya to be earning 15% commission on athlete's earnings? Extortion? Such is expatriate lifestyle in Africa.

Know about the sport and cost of having an agent. Without an agent you are like a ant in an ant-hill.... Agents get train you and organise for you races and pay for almost 80%of athletes training
