A Segmented Turning - Part 2

In this video I build the bowl to go with the feature ring. The primary wood is mesquite with maple and bloodwood accents. I hope you enjoy the video. Comments are always welcome.

    You do great work and I have learned a lot watching. Instead, of gluing up each layer to a piece of plywood I use a flat chuck. I also use the flat chuck off of the tailstock to align them to the spindle to ensure centeredness.

    Tom - Thank you for your comment. I've abandoned the plywood technique and am using a flat chuck as well. I show this process in some of my more recent videos. Thanks again! Take care, Steve

    Beautiful workmanship and I know this is an older video, but can you explain how and why there are plywood base's and inserts inside some of your rings? Is it just for centering and glue ups?

    Alan - Thank you for the comment. Before I built a wedgie sled I glued up half rings and used the plywood as a way to true up the joint between the two halves. I have an even older video that explains the process. I put a link in these comments. Please excuse the quality of the video and the workmanship. I believe I've improved in both areas. :-) Thanks for watching and for the comment. Take care, Steve kzread.info/dash/bejne/omdqupuGZda4pag.html

    Steve why do you have scrap pieces glued to almost every ring? Seem like a lot of wasted time?

  • @slindsley1951

    @slindsley1951

    Thomas - I used the half ring method to glue up my rings. The joint between the two halves was perfect so I glued them to a piece of plywood and used the table saw to true up the joint. I don't have a disk sander so I use the table saw. If using a disk sander there would be no need to attach the rings to a piece of plywood. If you'd like so see more take a look at one of my earliest videos here and fast forward to 5:02. kzread.info/dash/bejne/omdqupuGZda4pag.html Take care, Steve
