Steve, Very nice demo on how you did your feature ring. Wow! I have been turning segmented bowls for the last year and I am totally hooked. What I love is that each one is is a new learning experience. Thanks to guys like you that have paved the way with your videos on U tube. Keep turning, Chuck

Chuck - Thank you very much for your comment. Turning segmented pieces is one of my favorite things to do. I'm working on a new stave/segmented piece that I will have finished up soon. Stay tuned for the video. I have several segmented videos on my channel. If you haven't already please subscribe and check them out. Thanks again for your comments and kind words. Take care, Steve

What a beautiful piece ! To me turnings are often works of art and this one is well up there with the best. There are many things of beauty but are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard - never mind the narrow opening - I would be more than happy to see that sitting on my cabinet! I like the way you design and turn each end of your pieces separately, saves on using very long tools and a miners lamp I guess. Another ace presentation Steve, thank you, regards, Tony(UK)

I have an older model Delta lathe (model 76-714) that I bought off Craigslist in 2008. I've rebuilt the tailstock and most of the headstock over the past few years. Parts are becoming harder to find so one day it will have to be replaced but for now it works ok for the amount of turning I do. Thanks for subscribing to my channel.

Thanks Jack. Segmented turnings are a lot of fun but a lot of work as well. Give one a try when you have a chance. They are generally my winter time projects. As you can see from my other videos, I spend a lot of time making non-turning projects for family and friends. I'll be back to posting turning videos soon.

Thanks Garry. To finish the bottom I turned a jam chuck to fit the top opening, used the tail stock to center it up then held it to the chuck with packing tape once the tail stock was removed. Cap'n Eddie Castelin shows the technique in his video #187 CA Finish on a Hollow Piece. I should have included this in the video and next time I will. It's important to use a light cut or the piece might come off the lathe. Don't ask me how I know that. :) Good luck with your piece,

Michael - Thank you for watching and commenting on my video! I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun turning and doing segmented pieces. I would suggest that you make yourself a wedgie sled to cut the segments. It makes the process go a lot faster with perfect results every time. Thanks Jim. I appreciate the comment. Segmented turnings are time consuming but rewarding when finished. Start with something simple and give it a try! My first attempt was a small 6 inch bowl about 3 inches tall that I made from some scrap plywood. It was good practice. Take care, Steve

Beautiful segmented piece, Steve! I love turning Mesquite, though I have yet to turn a segmented piece with it. I will now though for sure! It dulls the tools a little faster, but turns very smoothly. And I really like how it reddens up after a few months (especially if it gets any sun light). Have you noticed a color difference yet? Keep up the turning and thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much Alamocdc. This was the first time I turned mesquite. It was fun to turn but definitely hard on the tools. I have the piece in my office where it doesn't get a lot of sun. I think I'll move to a window and see what happens. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Take care. Steve

I had a pretty good finish after I finished scraping the outside of the bowl. Given that there is no end grain on a segmented turning sanding goes pretty quickly. I'd guess I had an hour maybe two in sanding total (inside and out). Your point about leaving the tail stock in place is well taken. It's always best to leave the tail stock in place as long as possible. Truthfully, I'm not sure why I removed it at that point. Thank you for watching. Take care, Steve

Thanks Carl. Segmented turnings take a long time but they are worth it in the end. I believe Guy Bradbury commented in his recented segmented video that the started it when he was 10 and is now 60. I understand how he feels. I'm thinking about making a new sled and will definitely make a video if I do. Thanks again for watching!

What I used on that project is what I used on the inside of this turning. The outside finish on this project was Woodturners Finish by General Finishes. That's for your comment and questions. Yes, the vessel could be glued together and then the inside and outside turned. It would be a little more difficult to turn the inside but certainly possible. I prefer to turn the inside then glue the piece together but that's just a personal preference. Thanks for clarifying your question. Take care, Steve

My lathe is a Delta Iron Bed 1440. The model number is 46-715. It's an old lathe that is no longer made which means it's more difficult to find parts. I bought it in 2008 off of Craig's List and rebuilt parts of it. It does what I need it to do although I would like to upgrade one of these days. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. @@slindsley1951 Thanks for your reply Steve. I have a small lathe and I am challenging it's limits with what I am expecting it to do. I am ready to up grade myself and I am trying to get input on what equipment turner's are using. I know it boils down to personal choice. Like anything else the pro's and con's can vary greatly. You have amazing talent, great video's.
