The 1ZZ-FE engines are notorious for oil consumption caused by piston rings frozen with carbon deposits. The drilled extra holes from 2003 or 2004 which partly solved the problem. But basically it's a rebuild once the problem starts (often around 100 000 miles/160000 km), as it will only worsen with time.

The 2zz-Ge is a fine engine, but it was notorious for timing cover leaks, which are a huge PITA to replace, so every single one leaked and it was only a matter of time until the low oil killed the high rpm engine. You have to exceed 1G in a turn to make the stock oil pump cavitate.

The timing cover leak on the 2ZZ is pretty common as the cars age but honestly not a huge deal to fix. What IS extremely common is the severe oil consumption on Celica GT with the 1ZZ engine from 00-02 due to bad rings. Requires a rebuild or new engine. Now THAT is an actual pain.

@@AlDim000 Agreed. My 2zz-ge w/180k is from 2004 and is still ripping off the limiter weekly with no trouble. All it wants is zero leaks, 3k synthetic oil changes, OE filters, and the stock intake setup. A CAI is a death sentence for it given much air it pulls and how poorly non OE filters work for filtration.

I've had a few of these, and older previous generations too like Scotty's- but I had GT's, which in that spec was the the higher output 3SGE engine. Great engine. The last GT engine like the red one here, is called the 1ZZ -and also had bottom end problems which did detonate them. I speak from experience. The GTS 2ZZ Yamaha engine he is talking about had problems with the lift cam bolts snapping, and oil starvation in hard and prolonged cornering due to the sump design -but after after 2003 they addressed the cam bolts, but not the oil sump pan. It is a much better engine than the 1ZZ, and not prone to many failures, but only if serviced regularly. That is key. Change the oil and filter every 6- 7000 miles, and also the cam 'lift' oil filter screen needs looked at every once in a while, but if you're changing the oil regularly, this also should always be fine. One simple, cheap mod is to put the 1ZZ oil sump on, which has a baffle. This eliminates any oil starvation in corners. I'm at over 180k miles on mine and still going strong. Great car.

I have been quoted £250-350 to fix this (could be more) and will need rear brakes. The engine does sound good, but I do think I am getting some clutch slippage. I know it's hard to diagnose things from a far, but I am wanting to keep the car for about 5 years or more, would it be worth it? or would I only be buying myself another year's usage with the rust?

Here in the UK I spoke to a guy with an S2000, the stats looked great but he said to get it to really go you had to rev the heck out of it. As far as I'm concerned that's useless for every day driving. My Lexus V8 is far more fun for me because it has torque, sure it has BHP too but the engine hardly does over 3000 rpm. I just let the autobox do it's thing, unless going downhill then I put it in a lower gear myself as it's an older 6 speed.

Oil starvation was caused on high speed turns at high RPM. Failing oil pump gears were caused by the sintered metal oil pump gear disintegrating from the damage caused when they tried to pump air. Both can be compensated for with aftermarket parts. Toyota built themselves an underpowered sports car, but used a family car oil system. As far as where Toyota was aiming with the 00+, it was at the Integra GS-R and Type R. Direct competitors. Also, the demise of the Celica was caused by the draw to SUVs. Toyota didn't want to make any more performance cars, and spent more on developing their SUV lineup. The Celica was the last nail in Toyota's performance car lineup, dying just like the Supra and MR2. BTW, the Scion TC certainly has an interesting name, doesn't it? 😉

I was curious as to who makes the transmissions for the Chevy Cruze, so I looked it up and found out it is made by Ford. It is one of the models that GM and Ford cooperated with each other. A couple days later I got an email from Cruze Talk about a guy who had over 200 thousand miles on his and he wanted to know if anyone else had as a long a lasting Cruze. He goes many responses from people including one guy who was closing in on 300 thousand. I know you don't think much of either make, but it does show that you are right about cars lasting a long time if people take good care of them. Meanwhile on another You Tube channel a young woman who is ex-military is rebuilding an early model Celica and scrounging as many OEM parts as she can.

I have owned a 2004 vibe and currently only 2006 matrix. The c59 transmission in the vibe lasted 200,000 and had input shaft bearing failure. I put new bearings and seals in the c59 and got another 100,000 miles out of it The 2006 matrix c59 transmission lasted about 170,000 mi and was starting to make the same noises. I replaced the c 59 with a c60 and am thrilled with the results. I have a little over 200,000 on the matrix and am running liquid Molly synthetic oil in it. I'm currently sitting at 8,600 mi on the oil change and it hasn't burnt or lost any. I really appreciate the simplicity of the matrix and the vibe and regret that simple cars are no longer available. The vibe made it to about 280,000 mi, and I decommissioned it because I live in near Buffalo and rust had gotten the better of it. There seems to be way too much of people's identity tied up in what they drive it blows my mind that companies like stalantis exist Low dollars per mile is the most important factor. And these cars come out on top regarding this.
