A River of Life: Water in the Abila Pilgrimage Complex in Late Antiquity

Robert Smith, Ph.D., of Mid-Atlantic Christian University, will discuss how water has been used in Christian structures throughout the centuries. In the ancient city of Abila, where Christianity became dominant by the fourth century, a veritable river ran through a pilgrimage complex. Dr. Smith will highlight through archaeological studies the many water features that created a sense of hierotopy and served pilgrims’ physical and spiritual needs.
