A review of the Canon G7x Mark II after 4 years of use by a professional photographer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I originally bought the canon G7x Mark 2 as a daily carry pocket camera for use on professional assignment in Uganda to supplement my main DSLR cameras and to shoot behind the scenes footage of the assignment. Since then I have used this camera extensively over the last few years. In this video I give my opinions on its ability as a stills and video camera, I show some of the footage we captured in Uganda and go over some of the photographs in Lightroom

Finally someone that talked about the still images of this camera. I almost never used my full frame because I can't imagine walking around with it, sometimes I regret not buying a camera like this. I'm almost buying one.

I certainly enjoy using this camera for photography and I am a bit of a perfectionist. I won’t bother with a camera unless I think it’s capable of professional results. The question these days is “is it better than a recent iphone?” I have an oldish IPhone 8 Plus and the canon is better..whether that is true of something like the iPhone 12 or 13 is another question. Glad you enjoyed the video. RR

@@RoyRiley I went through the iPhone-or-camera dilemma before settling on buying the Canon. My research so far shows that there are 2 key models when it comes to iPhone cameras: 6S and 11 Pro/Pro Max. I've got a 6S 64GB now, and the question was whether or not to upgrade to 11 Pro, which is how I realised that I honestly don't need a phone upgrade and that a used 11 Pro 64GB in good condition was more expensive than a Canon in a comparable used condition, while being worse than Canon (imo, of course).

@@RoyRiley I still think it’s better thank the iPhone 12 Pro Max for overall image quality as the photos get larger. The iPhone has it beat with versatility and convenience since we always have a phone on us. I’ve got both and and I’m not a professional for what it’s worth.

I love this review because it is about using the camera, not about the specs and such. I am not a pro photographer but am a consultant who uses photography and video with my work. I am also a serious amateur/hobbyist. My main camera is a Canon 90d and X have a couple of L lenses to make the most of what the camera can do. When I am hiking or biking outdoors I always take my G7X II along and it amuses me how I keep being surprised at how fantastic this camera really is. Photos that look OK to good on the camera screen are almost always much better when I download them onto my computer. I just can't get over the color saturation, the dynamic range and the clarity and detail of this little thing. Sometimes this is all I have and when I get home and look at the photos, it makes me wonder whether it is worth it to lug my DSLR with me when I go on an outing, lol. Of course, the DSLR is better for staged shots or portraits, but otherwise, this is just a remarkable camera. Thanks for your review.

Totally agree. I haven’t taken my DSLR on a single trip in the years since I got this little camera. It does 99% of what I want to do and will practically fit in my pocket. The only major drawback is the limited zoom compared to a 28-300 lens.

I have the Mk1 that I bought in a pawn shop about 5 years ago for about half what a Mk2 was going for new. It's been a great camera. I use it mostly when cycling, taking photos while riding with a group. It fits nicely into a jersey pocket or a small handlebar pouch. I dropped it onto pavement today and it was fine. I suppose when it does break, I'll get a used Mk2 or Mk3 to replace it. I don't like to spend a lot for something I am going to take such risks with.

Thanks for summary of the capabilities of the Canon G7X Mark II. People often look at this camera for video but it is great for stills as well. I love the small profile and low light performance for street photography and the 8 FPS is great for capturing my dogs in action. Another older compact that is still relative today is the Panasonic ZS100, a very capable camera with more of a reach (250mm).

I have used the G7X mk i (or original or whatever) for years, and I love it. Even have some 10x15 inch prints hanging on the wall. The only camera I took to England in 2017 for a two-week tour. Beautiful pictures, including many in low light (no flash). I also have the dust problem. There are a couple of videos on YT showing how to drill small holes in the lens barrel to get to the back of the lens. A little too extreme for me. I tried the vacuum cleaner fix, but it didn't work. Good video, thanks!

Thanks Roy, another good video. I've had the tiny Canon S120 since 2015 (The final iteration of the S series compacts before they were incorporated into the G series). It was totally free (courtesy of Tesco supermarket vouchers... when they were really worth something). I took my favourite ever photo using it, an image that has been exhibited, printed at around 1.5 meters wide, and it really holds up. It's a little metal tank of a camera and I should really carry it more than I do, because it's still better than my phone camera where it counts. I have a Fuji X100V and so many KZreadrs bang on about how small and portable it is. I guess they never held a Canon S120.

Wow that last picture looks very good with the built-in ND, i was looking at all my printed pictures in my house and realised that about 90% of them were taken by a phone, so i returned my M50 with that big heavy 18-135 lens, it was too big and heavy to carry around, same thing with my last Canon 80D, so most of the time i was shooting with my phone ''The best camera is the one you have with you'' , i think the G7X would fill the bill perfectly, especially with that ND filter for traveling

I have the Fuji XT 20 with various lenses that was my constant companion but back issues began limiting me to one or two primes. A guiding light at B&H strongly suggested that I invest in the G7XII, reminding me of the store's return policy after allowing me to test it. This camera has been my go to at every given opportunity. The colours are vibrant, images are sharp, cropping is great with the G7XII sporting 20+ megapixels, and, as you mentioned in the video, its almost diminutive size makes the unit discreet and unassuming. I think it was either Faizal Wescott or Roman Fox who said that having a good compact camera makes the photographer look like a tourist or an amateur and that alone has helped me navigate through my love of street journalism. I called B&H yesterday to order another battery and charger (I highly recommend Watson--I did not know it is their store brand) and the sales rep told me that the G7XII is still a strong and steady seller--some four years later.

Bought a Lumix LX100 for very similar reasons. So far so good. Possibly over paid at £250 on Ebay but did include second battery and the flash which is a bit cumbersome for a pocket cam. There are videos on KZread of tear downs for how to remove dust spots. Seems to affect all pocket cams. Went for a zoom over a slimmer fixed focal as I felt the fixed focal was just replicating the phone.

Thank you for your interesting video! I have several Canon PS cameras: G1 MkI and XMkIII, G5X. I too like cameras as cameras rather than a smartphone, and very rarely use a smartphone for photography (usually to record a serial # in a confined space), and I don't shoot video. Yep, I have a bunch of the big boys: FF and crop DSLRS and MILCS, but I use these PS units when I want not to be noticed, and when I want compactness and very low weight. The G5x with their 1" sensors have the wider range at 24-100 FoV, but I also like the G1x units for their APS-C sensors (28-112 and 24-72 FoV for the MkI and MkIII respectively) - the MkI has the built-in ND filter. For example, when I do multi-day hikes I have a pouch on my belt with one of these for instant use, while bigger-format units are a bit less accessible. However, after getting my gear absolutely flooded (despite having a "weatherproof" pouch and cover) when I had to hike 15km through a torrential gale to get to shelter on exposed alpine terrain, I looked for cameras capable of resisting at least an extended downpour, and preferably immersion. I went for the Olympus G5X (25-100 FoV) because it was very compact, could dive to about 15m and actually does close-up and stacking very well but it does have a very small sensor at 1/2.3". The other unit I got was the now-discontinued Nikon 1AW1 camera (also good to 15m) - I got this new, and very cheap, from discontinued stock on eBay. This is a bit bulkier and heavier because its lens protrudes, but it does not extend to zoom from 30-74mm FoV and the 1" sensor is considerably larger. I coddle my gear, (it's easier than trying to get rid of dust off the sensor) so I put a filter on all of my lenses to add some protection and I find that helps keep dust out of things - I can also then use a ND filter. It also means I can put a regular lens cap on and avoid some of the quirky petal caps that Canon have produced!

It is a very good camera. I really like the exposure adjustment dial and wish it was on my DSLR. The flip up LCD is great because people often don’t realize you’re capturing their image since the camera isn’t being help up near your face. I do wish they had done a firmware update allowing the use of the BR-1 remote. But the proof is in the pudding and people say they love the quality of the pictures. I am curious to know more info on that lens cap - it’s a good idea for travel as added protection. Thank you.

Afraid not used the 6400 so cannot really comment. I did use the A6000 quite extensively a few years back and that was a very capable camera. Really they are slightly different creatures. The g7x mark 2 works for me because it’s small light and just does what it does without any fuss or extras bits and pieces but that’s also it’s downfall if that make sense. Where as the Sony A cameras are more system based cameras that you can build with extra lenses and accessories. That make them very useful but more complicated and cumbersome. Only my opinion. Hope this helps ins some way. Sorry there is no simple answer!

This is the only camera I have and I’m really happy with it! It’s a shame there’s no microphone input. I use mine with a magnetic polarising filter, which works great. It’s surprising how well it works when shooting video in low light conditions. As far as dust goes, people drill holes on both sides of the lens casing, then use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust. Sounds drastic, but I guess anything goes when there’s no other option:)

I bought the mk3 for mountaineering. A friend of mine once took a DSLR, and the photos were amazing. This inspired me to think about real cameras. But the idea of taking a 1 kG or above huge camera while climbing a mountain is simply not viable. It's either hanging on your shoulder straps or you belt strap which is dangerous for the camera, or it's in the backpack so you have to stop to get it out. The iPhone just doesn't cut it. And as you said, the phone should be used for other things, e.g. checking the map or contacting other people. Battery runs out very fast if the screen is on as you take photos.

I climb mountains by walking on mountains trails. But to answer your question, I have a pouch for the camera, which I attach to the belt strap of the backpack. When I want to take a photo, I take hiking poles in one hand, or I hike with one pole in one hand, and the camera in the other. Basically the same as you. Although sometimes I do have to climb rocks on the trail by using both arms and legs. Sometimes this doesn't warrant putting away the camera, but when it does, I put it in the pouch. Nothing complex. It’s a good question! A question I think many photographers are beginning to ask. The latest iPhones are very very good and do things so easily with no hassle and the picture look really great to a certain point. In the right hands though and with good technique I still think larger sensor cameras like this Canon will produce slightly better results but really the gap is closing and in so many ways the iPhones are just superior because they are always with us, very discreet and instantly shareable.. we each have to find the right tools for our own selves.. what do you think?

I feel if cameras become more "programmable" they would surpass any smartphone combined with a big lens!

Hi Magali. Good to hear from you and sorry to learn of your wrist and finger issue. These things can make life fe very difficult. I have had problems with my arms in the past so I partly understand your situation. I think a camera like the G7x mark 2 or 3 or similar could be good for you to be able to get back behind the camera, enable you to use the controls you wish for and not to add too much weight. I’m guess the trade off is that the smaller size can make the controls ever so slightly more fiddly but Really I dont think that should be too much of a problem. If you wish for something more like your 70d then it might also be worth looking at the micro 4/3rd system cameras. They are mirrorless but have a smaller sensor and lenses. I use a Panasonic with a couple of LUMIX lenses but Olympus also make some great cameras and brilliant lenses in this range.

Thank you for the lovely photos you showed as part of this review, as well as (in advance) for your advice.

Thanks for your comment! My advice would be to keep it very simple. Put the camera in macro mode (close up mode.. ideal for flowers ..) Stick it on P mode for program and get shooting. After a few shots have a look at what you have and make sure it’s sharp. Getting sharp close up pictures can be trickier than it looks! Hope this helps in some way. RR

How much do you think you can enlarge pictures that are taken with this camera?

It’s a good question! Depends very much on the picture. I have had billboards printed from much lower res cameras than this and they have looked great. That said I have also struggled to get a decent A4 sized print from a very recent DSLR because the light was so poor. Lots of different factors involved. It would be easy to say “you can print up to A3 with this camera” but that kind of statement is very misleading I’m afraid. Hope this helps.

Hi, I recently got it bought for me for my birthday will it work for animal photography?

Nice birthday present! I normally just get socks.. will work fine for animals within the confines of the nature of the camera.. ( no massive telephoto for far away wildlife for example). My experience Of shooting animals is to spend time understanding the movements and character of whatever creature you are dealing with. Be patient and make the camera the last pice of the jigsaw rather than just blatting away

Should I buy this or keep saving money until I can buy the Fuji x100v!?? I just want it for photography and I don't wanna buy one and then regret it 💔

It’s a good question! If your hearts desire is the Fuji x100 then go for that because you will always wish you had one. However in terms of image quality I would think they are both similarly capable. Sometimes in life you just have to listen to your heart over your head. Hope this helps! Let me know which way you go. All the best. R

Great review and I'm diggin the continuous take. Feels very authentic compared to other channels out there. If you're still replying to comments, could this setup compare to the lens quality, colors and dynamic range of a mid-range t-series dSLR with stm kit lens or is it more on par with an older setup like a t2i bundle?

Cheers. This is a good question. I guess it depends on what and how you are shooting. In the right hands and with reasonable light, its a middle weight contender that can punch well above its weight. However stack it up against someone who knows what they are doing with a much older DSLR and a decent lens and it will probably end up shaking in the corner with its tail between its legs.. Hope this bizarre answers helps in some way! RR
