A Review of Europa Barbarorum (Mod for Rome Total War)

Ойындар

In this video, I review the classic mod Europa Barbarorum for Rome Total War. EB 1 is my favorite mod of all time. I have been playing it for over a decade now, and it is still definitely one of the greatest Total War mods ever made.

I believe a short stream would be nice to make that show off, also, it's an opportunity for direct and live feedback with everyone involved, I must say that I have tons of questions as well B-) I really love these videos, in fact, I'm in the middle of an England campaign in Stainless Steel 6.4 and now I wanna try some of the mods you recommended in your Top 5 Mods for M2TW. Also, what happened with Ancient Empires? I believe it has received a huge amount of updates and patches since your review, maybe an update of that review would be nice as well. Anywho, those are some of my suggestions, nevertheless, I really love how much detail you put on these videos, the way you speak is somewhat appealing as well, I hope this channels gets to get bigger in a short time! Greetings from Venezuela!

From an educational point of view, alone - the calendar system, reporting a virtually _complete tradition of annual events, offering accurate and rather authentic historical context_* , combined with *a meticolously crafted historical geography* (quoting contemporary geographers like Herodotus and Strabo in settlement descriptions) and *well researched, **_plausible_** units, based on archeology and artifacts of art* (again with primary sources or actors often mentioned in description boxes and models reminding quite of the OSPREY publishing series for minature sculpting) - all of these modified areas had turned 'Europa Barbarorum I' into *an introductory class in military and social history of antiquity* . Anyone with quasi 'autistic recall' and some sort of *'spatial imagination'* will easily contextualize historical academic literature after spending time with EB I - a hidden treasure of *educational software* .

After EB1, Stainless Steel is my 2nd favourite and the best mod for Medieval 2 in my opinion; I couldn't get into EB2 because I didn't like the recruitment system for representing the Hellenistic period. Armies of that era tended to be larger and more standardized than medieval armies, so I felt that Rome 1's recruitment system better represents that than Medieval 2 does. You can build a proper Roman legion or Successor phalanx-based army or steppe nomadic all-cavalry army with much greater ease than you can on EB2. Then as you went out away from your AOR and started conquering you could send your damaged units home for retraining and replace them with locals until they came back. It just seemed like a much better representation of how wars were conducted in the era

Hi Vijay - good points! I think determining which one to enjoy more (EB1 or 2) also depends on which factions you like to play. Stainless Steel is actually the one major mod I didn't play very much back in the day. I was a tester for Chivalry 2 so I mostly played that and Broken Crescent. I think perhaps I'll do some streams of Stainless Steel to get into it.

I prefer RTW engine more than M2TW engine. Special because animations(yes they are "barkly"), but more dynamic. Secondary because simple textures: for example it so stupid when eastern diplomat has a shiny dress, which looks like plate shiny, or everywhere shiny mails... Are you see mail hauberk in real? And third because models, they are simple but to normal, a golden mean. And more another reasons.

@@user-cm6tx7ib4z Missile units are more responsive to movement orders in RTW compared to Medieval 2 as well. In Medieval they like to take a moment to ponder on the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, before they carry out your movement order. Whereas in Rome 1 they generally respond straight away. It makes microing them easier, also makes them more effective since they can fire off an extra volley before retreating to safety

One of my favorite and longest campaigns I ever played in a Total War game was as the Romani in EB1, strictly following the historical progression and using cheat codes to prevent other factions from going off-script. Sadly EB1 has a crashing problem that gets worse and worse as the campaign progresses, and eventually you get to a point where a certain turn will just crash the game no matter how far back you reload and do things differently. :(

The Casse would probably be best represented as strong rebels, but the units were modelled and skinned and we'll play with them anyway. :)

Definately, the best mod. It has its flaws (that exist due to engine limitations, honestly), but they are overshadowed by multiple pros. If RTW was a great game by itself, EB raised it to legendary level, even after the release of Medieval II. BTW. Most factions in EB has March of Time Reform, which while not as absorbing as reforms in EB2, gives at least in most cases new general bodyguards.

March of Time is AMAZING if you're playing as Baktria or Hayasdan, the upgraded cataphract generals are the best heavy cavalry in the game. I found it to be a nerf playing as steppe factions though: I always liked the early heavy horse-archer bodyguards that Parthia and Saka have, over the cataphract late bodyguard. The early bodyguards are still formidable in melee whilst having the flexibility to be devastating archers as well. Plus their armour and ability to fire back made them perfect missile counters to any missile troops the enemy might field

A bit late to answer this, but in EB it is extremely important to properly line up your cavalry before the charge, and to have some distance between the cavalry unit and its target to build momentum, otherwise the charge bonus isn't properly applied. As the SPQR, you may want to look into Eqvites Extraordinarii (the allied heavy cavalry) or any Gallic cavalry: they're pretty good on the charge. As you already figured out, your base Eqvites aren't really top notch.
