A 1991 Adventure written by Carl Sargent, this was released before they went the thunder rift route instead. A decent adventure for beginning players, (We've definitely seen and reviewed worse) This adventure includes slaver, retrieving an item of magical power, sneaking into an enemy keep, and saving a whole lot of people.

Good review as always. I had my doubts about this adventure but I think this would make a great start for a campaign against The Iron Ring.

For a module set in the Black Eagle Barony it is a shame you don't see Henrick or Bargle even from a distance. I can under stand not dealing with them directly as that would likely be a TPK. As a module that can be reworked to fit into another campaign this sounds fun. Thanks for the review.

You could always make it so they do. It's a pretty decent adventure and you could fit it in, especially towards the end as they make thier escape

Thanks for the review and reviews in general on these classic TSR adventure modules. It shows how adventure design and how to get from act 1 to act 2 have changed some over the years or maybe the inherent bad idea of, if the characters don’t take the plot hook the adventure is over and has the DM stress they are heroes to continue happened back then with TSR as still happens today. The only drawback to today with WoTC 5e is it’s 2 to 3 big adventures a year compared to the 32 or 64 pages adventures that came out as numerous as machine gun shooting goat turds in the 80s

I actually prefer the shorty 32/64 page adventures over the 100/200 page books we get now. Easier to digest the information, and they would split up a campaign across multiple modules

I only ever ran this one once, and the players got themselves killed at Fort Doom. What was that you were saying about playing stupidly? I wasn't a fan of the epic level railroad story, let alone one for levels 1-2... but I may give it another try if my OSE group ends up near Luln. (Gotta keep it canon!) I look forward to your Dymrak Dread review... that one I've run many times and I quite like it actually. I've used it as a starter module many times and most players have enjoyed their romp through it.

We always think of the Old Crusader from Indiana Jones shaking his head and saying "He chose..... poorly" whenever my dear PCs do something that causes their unfortunate early demise. You're the first we've heard give Dymrak Dread any sort of positive outlook, so we'll keep it in mind that its not all negative against it when we do the Review!

We've heard that it was supposed to be, but the powers to be pushed it in a different direction causing the module to end up how it did. We're going to try and view it from the point of view that it isn't a sequel and on its own merits. Try is the optimum word

Going to run this one this weekend. I would have appreciated if Carl had given more background on the Eye of Traldar itself. The PCs ending the adventure with it really ups the ante. Seems like the sort of thing that should be destroyed.

Google the Eyes of Traldar. To summarise, the Eyes of Traldar are a pair of gems dating back to the time when Zirchev was still a mortal man (BC 870), in the land of Traldar. His apprentice was given the two orbs and became known as the Seer of the Lake of Last Dreams (where he set up residence). Over the course of centuries, the title passed from successive masters to apprentices, along with the magical items. In BC 308 a young mage, corrupted by Orcus, managed to steal the Black Opal Eye and fled with it to the Blight Swamp. When she died, the gem was buried with her. It was eventually recovered in BC 4 by the latest Seer, named Elyas. He kept the gem in the Hantu Valley, where he was great friends with the local elves, and he split his time between here and the Lake of Lost Dreams. in AC 3, Orcus sent three witches to defeat Elyas (as he was doing too much good in the world). They made a huge mountain fall on the tower in the Hantu Valley, but Elyas managed to trap the witches' souls under the tower too. The witches and the Black Opal Eye were trapped, but Elyas was killed. The local elves honoured his sacrifice by building a temple there. With the sudden death of Elyas, the chain of Seers was broken. The line of Seers did subsequently arise again, but without access to the Black Opal Eye (believing it lost or destroyed). Of the pair, only the Fire Opal Eye remains in their possession, still in the Lake of Lost Dreams today in AC 1000. The Eyes of Traldar Wondrous items, legendary (require attunement by an arcane spellcaster) Characters cannot learn the properties of these gems through focusing on them during a short rest. The identify spell reveals the following information: Identify wrote: This magical gem has powers from the divination (Fire Opal Eye) / enchantment (Black Opal Eye) school, allowing you to cast certain spells from this school a limited number of times per day. You must be attuned to the stone in order to use its powers. Attunement requires a day of study, focusing on the object, and can only be achieved by an arcane spellcaster. Each day of study so spent will reveal another power of the stone, up to the character's class level in arcane spellcasting classes (so a 1st level wizard can reveal the first power only; a 3rd level wizard can unlock all three powers over a period of three days). For the purposes of these items, arcane spellcasting classes are: sorcerer, warlock, wizard. Additionally every three levels in eldritch knight (fighter specialisation) and/or arcane trickster (rogue specialisation) count for one class level of arcane spellcasting (so a 6th level eldritch knight could unlock the first two powers). Spell effects in order are listed below for each stone (with the spell level in brackets for info). Fire Opal Eye powers 1: detect evil and good (1) 3/day, detect magic (1) 3/day 2: augury (2) 2/day, detect thoughts (2) 2/day 3: clairvoyance (3) 1/day Black Opal Eye powers 1: charm person (1) 3/day, command (1) 3/day 2: calm emotions (2) 2/day, zone of truth (2) 2/day 3: suggestion (2) 2/day None of these powers require any vocals, somatic movements, or material components. These are at will powers for an attuned individual when holding the relevant Eye of Traldar (noting that the casting times are still required). If an individual is attuned to both the Fire Opal Eye and the Black Opal Eye, and have unlocked all of the powers listed above for both gems, then they gain the following additional abilities: They can use the Fire Opal Eye to cast arcane eye (4) once per day. They can use the Black Opal Eye to cast dominate person (5) once per day.

Serious TTRPG question for all of you out there: Do you hack other RPG title adventures, monsters, maps and rules...and place them in an RPG of a TOTAL different genre? I have used the castle map from 1983's I6 "Ravenloft" and used it in Call of Cthulhu, TSR's Indiana Jones and Top Secret 😂While I've used CoC's "Luck Stat" and used it in AD&D 🤔

I've used the Moathouse from village of Hommlet multiple times as a one-shot adventure for new players. I've had it haunted by a wight they have to defeat along with his skeletal minis, or a bandit camp, or a goblin infested ruin. I haven't taken an entire monster from another game, but I've altered the stats on a current D&D monster to fit the general idea of something I've seen from TV, like fast zombies, or I've changed how the Wights attacks are actually magical slashing damage with an additional life steal. And the sword is a magical wight blade that players could loot.... but would possess them upon death.

I don't believe how much people want for a copy of this. You're better off getting the PDF, then going down to your local office supply store to print it out. These modules are meant to be _played,_ which is obvious by the crapy condition of most of the old ones you buy. People expect them to be as valuable as if they were old Superman comics. They're not. There's a difference between what someone charges on eBay, and what a customer is willing to pay. In most cases, they've been sitting there for years.
