In this Psycho Farm Journal Club video, the presenter delves into the delayed onset hypothesis of anti-psychotic onset of action, examining its origins and challenging its validity. They review a paper published in 2003 that scrutinizes the time it takes for anti-psychotic drugs to take effect and answer the question of how long do anti-psychotics take to work. Contrary to the widely accepted belief of a two to three-week delay in efficacy, the study suggests an early onset hypothesis, proposing that the therapeutic effects commence almost immediately upon reaching therapeutic levels and accumulate over time. The presenter discusses how this finding contrasts with the traditional understanding, highlighting the misconception between onset of action and time required for significant improvement. They emphasize the importance of critically evaluating preconceived notions in psychiatric and medical practices. The study's key finding reveals that the anti-psychotic drug action initiates early, with substantial improvement observed within the first two weeks of treatment, contradicting the previously held belief in a delayed onset. The presenter suggests a conceptualization of the drug's action akin to psychological extinction, where immediate effects begin the process of unlearning dysfunctional beliefs, with full therapeutic effects gradually accumulating over time. Overall, the video underscores the need to align beliefs with empirical evidence in understanding the efficacy of anti-psychotic drugs.

This was brilliant. I love how you explain things! I would really appreciate a video on personality disorders. I have BPD, and it is so hard to find information on psychotropics and personality disorders. I feel like if anyone can explain this to me it will be you. I know that personality disorders are more learned than imbalances, but there has to be a reason why they have not found anything that is accepted. I am on quetiapine, venlaflaxine, and vyvanse. I have taken numerous medications on top of that. I have found that these help significantly, but nothing is FDA approved. Please make a video on it. 🙏
