Usually those "go get rested up" quest endings are quests that are the last MSQ quest in that patch (i.e. the last quest in 3.2, etc...) Normally there is a three month wait between that quest and the next patch so I can see how it can feel weird when you're going through the whole MSQ in one go rather than in chunks like players who have been around for a while.

For me personally, the feeling I have experienced while playing Shadwobringers and Endwalker is something I have not experienced in any games I have played for the last 30 years in any gaming genre story-wise even if I consider the nostalgia factors of the old games I have played. And all of that was possible because I played and understood ARR. I will never ever reach that level of feeling, surely I will still love it because it's that good even as a stand-alone game but it will never reach those heights for me if not for ARR. People will have different opinions about ARR and that is absolutely fine. What is important is what I thought and felt about it and what it has given me ... a higher level of appreciation of the next expansions until Endwalker.

FFXIV if nothing else made me appreciate the power of continuity, consistency and proper development of story and the power of small details. Personally still one of the coolest parts of the game was going to Satasha(the first dungeon) and seeing that adventurer parties hanging outside. You can talk with them a bit, see who the tank, healer and other DPS are and see them actually have a bit of character as an inexperienced new party. And it is even cooler to see that story develop later on. It helps the immersion and feeling of being in an active world something I never got in another MMO to the extent as it is in FFXIV. Certainly not in WOW where story points can be left to rot and major characters can disappear for multiple expansions(Khadgar) and anything can be retconned on a whim.

My issue with player choice in RPGs is that it by necessity dilutes the story-telling experience. Say for example you're playing a game about overthrowing an evil king. On it's own, that's a pretty generic story, but you could really flesh it out with good writing, fun characters, immersive gameplay, and interesting optional side quests that give you more detail about aspects of the game world. If this a 100+ hour immersive game, that simple plot will amount to a ton of work. Let's say that you insert ONE meaningful choice: side with the evil king or against him. Now you've almost doubled your workload, because all of those characters, plot points, and side quests have to accommodate that choice. Or say you are allowed to kill a companion character if you want to. Now you can't have that companion be an integral part of the story, because otherwise your plot is going to feel weird to those players who killed them. Sure you can make a good story *IN SPITE* of these choices, but having player choice in your game for the sake of it doesn't necessarily add anything to your core plot. And it adds a ton of work, especially in an MMO where the single player experience isn't the only focus. Having your audience choose dilutes the meaning of the tale being told. That's not to say that player choice and crazy divergence in plot can't work. Divinity Original Sin 2 is a great game, but it's great because it is billed as a PLAYER CHOICE RPG. You're there to change the world based on your choices, and it (among many other cRPGs) is excellent at that. But I very much doubt anyone would say it's main plot is on par with the best stories in gaming. The WORLD and SIDE QUESTS are really cool, but the main plot has a lesser resonance because of it's branching narrative. There is no video game on Earth that is going to be as good as tabletop Dungeons and Dragons in this regard. Your choices will never be your own because the developers have to program a game with pre-set paths in it. Thus, player agency, even in Divinity Original Sin 2, is an illusion. You may have chosen to do ABC while I chose DEF, but these were pre-perscribed paths. And in the end, all you're going to want to do is replay the game to see the other paths, or watch a play though online. In a tabletop RPG, the Dungeon Master is a human being who can react intelligently to your every whim. Until computers get intelligent enough to program on-the-fly in response to your choices, this just isn't feasible in a video game. My question is: why does player agency matter in FF14? There are already a few instances where your dialogue choices can inform your character. The simple act of completing certain quests vs not doing them has (admittedly minor) impact on future dialogue and quests. The game is ABSOLUTELY STUFFED with content already. Do you really need a mutually exclusive plot line revolving around siding with the bad guy? What happens in 3 expansions when the bad guy is supposed to be dead? Do you keep writing two stories? The developers are already telling the story they want to tell. If you want more significant player agency in the plot, I don't think FF14 or any story-driven RPG is the place to find it. And yes I'm aware that Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Elder Scrolls Online exist. Their main plots are lesser for the player choice they incorporate. You're free to disagree of course, but case-in-point: no one plays an Elder Scrolls game for the main plot. In the end, there is a reason Lord of the Rings isn't a choose-your-own-adventure story. How many choose-your-own-adventure books are considered timeless, classic literature? None. And I've already told you why.

It's hard to get invested in a story that I can reload and redo differently. The experience at the end feels hollow because now my choice isn't the actual truth or canon end to the story. There are countless RPG's with multiple endings or open endings where people desperately discuss what the real or canon ending is, forever, because they want closure to the story. In my opinion this is something the author should deliver instead of being cheeky. I'm not against endings being open to interpretation but most that I've come across are more just indicative of the author writing themselves into a corner, laziness, or thinking they're being artsy when it's just shit. I agree that D&D storytelling is really untouchable for video games at the moment. For the WoL in FF, as revealed later in the game and throughout the many job/raid/side quests, the character themselves is all about adventure. So the idea of going where the wind takes us as Nobbel puts it, is exactly in-character for the WoL and fits well for an MMO. The more players stop and digest the story the more they'll discover all these connections in it as they look back on their journey. Because of it's length and style it's an experience you can't really have in any other type of game at the moment which makes it a special experience.

when 5.0 (Shadowbringers) came out it was *suggested* to have done it, but wasn't mandatory yet. 5.1 or 5.2 made it mandatory to proceed past 5.2. At the same time *every new player* had to finish Crystal Tower before the end of 2.4 or 2.55 in order to proceed with the story. If you were already past 2.55 you had until 5.2 to finish the raid series but it was still mandatory. I do also agree that they should implement Coils waaay deeper into the story or even make it mandatory. It's such a good story, closes sooo many blind spots in the story and has some of the most amazing fights in the game in it

1:41:50 - There’s an anime called “Grimgar of Fantasy & Ash” that is effectively an MMO isekai akin to SAO, but they ground MMO mechanics to reality in such an amazing way, I highly recommend the show to anybody who loves RPGs/MMOs. That said, I’m going to spoil an early part of the story that relates to Edda (spoiler warning if you have any interest) The main party loses their healer & basically does a “party finder” recruitment where they bring in a healer who is looking for a new party, but she comes off as cold and uncaring at the start. As she travels with the party, people are taking minor damage likes cuts and scrapes that she refuses to heal, saying “it’s just a light wound, you should have been more careful.” And it reaches a point where they learn about her backstory- she is looking for a new party because she let her entire old party die, because she was out of mana when she needed it from healing all their small wounds all the time. So you learn that she isn’t a bad healer, but instead learned from her mistakes to not waste mana overhealing & save it for crucial moments of life and death. The Edda story feels a lot like the healer story from Grimgar, but the bad ending version. Instead of learning and becoming a better healer, she loses herself to despair. If that kind of story interests you, I cannot recommend Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash enough.

One of the characters is so frustratingly annoying in that show that it made it a very, very tough watch. As a viewer you shouldn't go into every episode hoping he gets killed off. ;) But it was an interesting premise, I also like how they go a bit further to show their downtime in there sort of Italian village area. i think what both of you have to keep in mind about raids etc. is that there is a lot of time between expansions to bridge. the way you play everything continuously isn't the way veteran players have experienced the game. you get one raid tier, then one alliance raid, and some dungeons and trials alont the way, then the next raid tier, next alliance raid etc. until the lead up for the next expansion. so the motivation to go into raids is far higher in current content because they are new stuff to do.

Extremely slow, patient story telling. Suikoden 5. Great RPG. Need at least 4-8 hours of playing to get good. Persona 3, Persona 5 both take a couple hours to get into. Yup the little NPC stories and dialogue was what really drew me in ... I spend hours running around and talking to NPCs in so many places. If you like choices I THINK you would Enjoy the Pathfinder games: Kingmaker, and Wrath of the Righteous, A little correction, the cutscene that played was the first part with the battle ending with grand dad being swallowed by light ... with a message after that they are working on ARR. and then the game shut down and for around a year there was no FF XIV ... it was gone. one of the things about ARR and why a lot of things are as they are in the game, that it was basically a brand new MMO game created in 2 year, one of which half the team was working on fixing 1.0 to make it at least playable .. and to put in the story needed for ARR. About Nanamo, I am not sure how much of it was community backlash and how much pre planed ... since by the time the scene happened the story for the next expansion at least the major beats would be set ... and they would be also starting to work on the story of the expansion after the next ... so I am not sure if that kind of thing would be done solely for the community ... I can see them changing things around so that it comes up earlier and basically make it clear sooner because of community, but who knows..

ARR Patch Content did win much through QoL updates. 1. You get free direct Portations to The Waking Sands (like before you had to port to Horizon and walk the path) 2. When you reach 50 you got flying in all ARR Zones (Faster Traveling on the map) 3. They reduced the amount of Quest you have to do. Maybe i forgot something but all this combined helped to make this Patchquests better for New Players. Something else. You always watched the "A Realm Reborn Demo and Title" Version. But when you watch the "Opening Movie" you get more Background Information about whats happening.

I started on 14 in June and fell in love with it. I hadn't played an MMO in a long time and I got the urge again. It's really great to see so many people who give it a shot really get hooked on the experience. The community is great, the story is excellent with a great payoff, and the whole experience is really, really special.

As someone who has worked in a morgue since the start of the pandemic, I was starting to feel like my senses had sort of gone numb. FF inadvertently got me to realize I can still deeply care about people/things and even still cry. I realize yes this sounds VERY dramatic but it goes to show how personable the story can be for each person and how powerful the writing is. I love this game for what it is but for also helping me realize I can still be an empathetic person, even if the "people" are video game characters.

It is the ONLY video game that has ever made me cry. I don’t think that’s dramatic at all. It says a lot about the quality of the writing. I’m a pretty jaded, cynical person and this game melted me. I think it also has a lot to do with the fact that I was a massive FF fan in childhood, and playing through the MSQ brought back a lot of those good feelings for me.

1:38:00 the extreme version of the fights don't have a "oh we found more crystals" storyline. You talk to a bard and recount your tale. The extreme fight is the retelling of your tale through the bard's embellishments (ie harder than it actually was when you did it for real)

In ARR it was ritual sacrifice and the creation of gruesome totems with the sacrifice’s bones.

The expansions have gradually put me through an emotional loop. At the end of EW I literally just wanted to hug the developers. I am so emotionally invested I didn’t want it to end. I HATED questing in WoW. Anyone who knows me knows I literally hated the walls of text. Yet in FF I am so wrapped up I can’t stop reading. I have even started doing the side quests. It’s so beautiful. I thought wow was good with its few cinematic scenes. I came to FF and I don’t think I can ever look at WoW the same. It is so behind. Everyone needs to go in with an open mind. I too went in with a I’m going to hate it mindset. I have to tell my friends to just drop that feeling and embrace the game!

I only started to enjoy the story after 120 hours; up to that point, leveling in wow was less agonizing as killing stuff is less boring to me than having overwritten exposition shoved down my throat. Also, I'm not sure if this is normal within JRPGs but up to ShB, SE struggled with the whole "show, don't tell" rule when establishing threats.
