A Rare Look at Author Phillip Roth

Philip Roth has been called "America's greatest living novelist" many times over. Roth rarely does interviews, but he invited Sunday Morning into his home. And that's where Rita Braver sat down with him to talk about his work, his life, and his legacy.

You know what, honestly (which is what Roth is all about, honesty)....men who don't "like" women are vilified, but women who don't like men are encouraged.

I remember in the late 1960's when Portnoy's Complaint was released here in Australia... It was promptly banned by the wowsers of the day.....You could still buy it 'though.... bootleg or under the counter sales made it a best seller here... Today the book would hardly raise an eyebrow.....how things have changed...lol

I like how as soon as they say he doesn't believe in god they go to "Oh yeah he hates women according to his ex wife." Ugh, my god (pun intended)

There's a reason y Salinger stopped publishing (and disappeared) by 1965, or why no1 knows anything about Pynchon, or why Cormac McCarthy only ever gave 1 TV interview. There's also a reason for why Hemingway, Mailer, and H.S. Thompson's works grew from seminally fantastic to rabid shlock. The former cohort erects a barrier to keep the world on the outside, while the latter camp dined out on their own celebrity. FAME KILLS ART. I hope Roth knows this. His later work is weak.

Why is this woman asking about his atheism, let alone saying it would be publicly ridiculed? Ridiculous!
