Phillip Roth- a great, quietly altruistic humanitarian. Since his passing in 2018, we are bereft without his exceptional intellect and most wonderful spirit. His historical and societal analyses and syntheses are unparalleled. We have his 31 novels, his editing of writers of Eastern Europe, his essays and interviews. Yet our world today requires even more of his acumen, wisdom, and humor. For we are living in a most unfunny time. And a most unsexy time. as well.

All of this is true, but I must thank you for your last two sentences, which are profoundly true; I hadn't thought of our insane world like that, and their absence -- and the killjoys' unquenchable joy in killing them over and over -- explains our current predicament.

Just read my third Aravind Adiga, the yellow one of short stories - loved it. Perumal Murugan's ONE PART WOMAN is standing by, uncracked. Have wanted it for so long, I hate idea of being done with it!
