A Ramble In The Brambles - Doing It Ourselves Daily - Day Seven

Day Seven of the daily videos. I test out the new kitchenaid mixer for making bread, and its my first time at baking bread in an AGA cooker. Mother and I go for a ramble among the brambles in search of wild blackberries, and we spot some local wildlife.

“C’mon Mum - put your foot down!! Pure joy - how wonderful that the simple things can make for such happiness. Using the umbrella for a hook, baking huge loaves of bread, riding all over in the golf cart and sharing a joke with Mum. 😁

Thanks to Sherrie too for some much needed 'Mum time' especially rally driving a golf buggy! Loved it.

Michael I enjoyed this vlog soooooooooooo much! The simplest of life at the chateau! The baking of bread, cooking and getting back to how you started it all! Painting and DIY’s. But this one was so special as you and your Mom doing such fun together! Teasing her and her having fun. She is enjoying life having her son back to his ole creative self and spending time with him. Gosh any Mom would love to live in a place like that with all her kids together & yet still have their own lives! 👌🏼🙌🏼

I really enjoyed that Michael, it was nice just to see you out in the countryside with two of your favourite people and the dogs picking berries. With blackberries the best are usually hiding underneath close to the ground...or maybe other people picked the top ones and I just found the loads underneath. I’m jealous of your bread, it raised so high, I can never get it to raise so well like my grandmother did. One gran made hers with water and the other lived on a farm and used milk and they made very different types of just plain white bread. Back then they made bread at least twice a week, usually three times if there was any extras at table. They lived to far from a store, store bread was too expensive and tasted like crap😂🤣😂. It’s a treat to have hand made bread these days, though my daughter uses a bread machine and that’s ok. Can’t wait to see the jam being made if you show that, I usually make jellies because I don’t like all the seeds, especially blackberries, they are too big and get stuck between my teeth. I’ve really enjoyed your videos this week Michael and thats the way to get all your subscribers and Patrons back, maybe 2 or 3 a week for a bit before you cut back. I don’t mean to tell you what to do with your channel but ...there’s that nasty word but...just from watching other channels grow, those that are successful and those that just didn’t make it. There are so many chateaux channels looking for a piece of the market now it’s bound to be harder to keep the interest if you’re not consistent in getting content out. I have a lot of time on my hands ( health) and watch way too many vloggers. Those that consistently put out one video, same day and time every week, have the odd extra and occasionally a live seem to be the most successful long term. It’s like how people like to watch the weekly show of their favourite Tv program , it’s something reliable to look forward to. Anyway, too much nattering, well done this week and your sweet camera man did a lovely job🥰🙋🏼

I always turn my dough out onto a surface with a bit of olive oil as flour can make your bread too dense and taste of flour. The light oil allows you to knead a bit without it sticking or becoming over floured. Brush with butter when it is done to help keep outside tender and wait till it cools about 20 minutes before cutting. If you cut into it too soon, it lets the steam out that keeps it soft.

You mentioned a dairy farm being nearby. So real cream would be available. I remember as a child, cream rises to the top of fresh milk. My first experience with real cream whipped up for a delicious dessert was such a treat. It started my journey for cooking and baking. Remembering my mom baking the best fresh loaf of bread was magical. Being from San Francisco, of course, I'm crazy for Artisan breads, especially sourdough. Thanks for teaching me about the Aga. Wonderful stove, not usually seen in the U.S....

Loved the golf cart scenes and complimentary music, with Mum driving, Michael hanging off the back and the doggies forging ahead. Big smiles. :)

Very exciting for you to be trying out the Arga to make bread. If you like raisin bread it will also be great to make a loaf. I love a slice of raisin bread with butter. It will be nice to see how the farmer making the bales of hay. The cook book idea is a good one and perhaps designing a wall paper for the Gardener's cottage

It’s so good to see you smiling and happy! Andrew is lovely and I love the way he smiles when he catches you looking at him. I’m sure his smile is only matched by yours! The bounce in your step is back and I’m sure it’ll lead to great things ahead :-) Thanks for letting us come along on the journey
