FIDE Rules of Chess - Article 12: The role of the Arbiter 12.2 The arbiter shall: (a) ensure fair play (b) act in the best interest of the competition (c) ensure that a good playing environment is maintained (d) ensure that the players are not disturbed (e) supervise the progress of the competition (f) take special measures in the interests of disabled players and those who need medical attention.

To be fair, not sure many people have the standing or encyclopedic knowledge of FIDE rules that Short has. He was one of the only people who could have gotten away with this.

  • @irgendwerjoker

I can understand that Nigel was pissed, but then again, there have been a lot of cheating incidents. And rightfully so, there is pressure on FIDE that something is done about it...

shame he wasnt asked how he feels about women in chess that would have been interesting i remember him being brushed aside when Anna Muzhychuk did a Masterclass in Gibralter and was interupted by his disparaging comments on women in chess she finished on more points than Nigel in the Open that yeah hes a first class Prat though a good player

I mean, sweet as Fabian Caruano or Wesley So or MVL or even Magnus come across in interviews, they wouldn't say boo to a goose, let alone something memorable or controversial, or even interesting. Compare that with Short, Kasparov, Jan Timman, even Vishy - all that generation, let alone the Fischers or the Spasskys.

unfortunately Mr Short cheated in his game versus Li Chao in the recent Olympiad.. Not in the way that is commonly thought however. Nigel had his assistant, a man known only as "Dr Zeldano", hack into Li Chao's clock and shave .10 off of each second. There such as, Li Chao received 10% less time than Short. Chao naturally became unglued and instigated the controversial cheating outrage in which Short was strip searched and forced to continue the match in a bathrobe with a silhouette of a Staunton Bishop on the back. Short won the game but British chess lost her honor.
