A quick and affordable cooling solution used by soldiers in dangerous heat

Your body cools itself through the skin, so dunking your forearms, which represent 10% of the skin's surface area, in ice cold water can speed the cooling process in hot weather. CBS News national environmental correspondent David Schechter reports.

There was no such relief for us on the Roosevelt when we were in 110 degree heat in the Persian Gulf. We adapted or we died, and some actually did on my 2010 cruise. Even in our berthings where we slept the AC often broke down and the only way to stay cool was by spraying water on your face and using a fan to cool off. That was pretty much all we had.

We just used a deluge shower in White Sands, New Mexico. You have to drink water constantly in that kind of heat. We still had a couple of people fall out because they weren't drinking water. Follow your instructions and you should be OK!

Fill that Camelback with ice. Keep a towel in the pouch where it stays cool and wet. You can also keep a beer cold in the pouch.

Probably doesn’t work as well. The tiny blood vessels in our extremities get even tinier in the cold. So using feet would be sending a much smaller volume of blood through the cool area per second. Less cooled blood to the core.

Shrug. Apparently it’s more likely to help than hurt. Ain’t like these are the days of doctors using leeches. Practices are tested for efficacy and safety before widespread implementation

Rapid changes in body temperature can, but this is preventative measures for heat stroke I think you are supposed to cool them down slowly ...
