A queer priest on leaving his evangelical church & making faith more inclusive | Devout and Out: Pip

After going through conversion therapy, marrying a woman and having children, Pip came out as gay. He’s now an Anglican priest who’s breaking new ground with queer-focused services at his church. #CBCShortDocs #Devout+Out

Pip grew up in a conservative evangelical Christian community. From an early age, he knew he was gay. But as a pastor’s son, Pip believed that there would be great consequences for being queer - in this life and the next.
In the early 2000s, teenage Pip was placed in “reparative therapy” (sometimes referred to as “praying the gay away”). It didn’t work. In his early 20s, still struggling with failed conversation therapy, Pip chose to marry his best friend Kris (a woman) in an attempt to “fix” himself. After the birth of their second child, Pip found himself depressed and living life in an alcohol-fuelled blur.
Pip and Kris decided to divorce, but continued to live and raise their family together. When Pip came out as queer, he was asked to leave his church. He and Kris were also kicked out of their evangelical community. They lost many friends, Pip’s mental health spiralled, and Kris struggled to care for both Pip and their children.
But this was not the end of their journey.
Eventually, Pip returned to school to study in the Anglican tradition, a denomination with a growing number of progressive parishioners and clergy members. A few years later, Pip met Alex, a young filmmaker with no religious background, and they fell in love. Now, Pip, Alex and Kris all live together as one family: three parents, all playing equal roles, and two children.
In terms of his religious life, Pip found a new community when he became a priest in an Anglican parish. His sexuality, partnership and family are welcomed. Pip is breaking new ground by curating queer-focused events and services, like inviting drag queens and other LGBTQ activists to perform and take part in the church.
During the 2016 Synod election campaign, Pip advocated to allow same-sex couples to marry in the Anglican Church of Canada. He and Alex created advocacy videos that showcased queer Anglican families faithfully living their truth. To their delight, the vote passed. Pip and Alex were able to marry at their home parish, with Kris as their “brosmaid” and the full support of their community.

This documentary changed my life. I am a 16 year old and was previously a catholic. I was struggling finding acceptance in the church being gay. When I discovered the Anglican Church through this documentary, which is very similar to Catholicism with the exception of it being affirming of lgbt rights, I felt something shift. I finally found acceptance with my Christian Faith and coexisting with my sexuality. When I turn 18 in 2021 I plan on fully converting to Anglicanism. Thank you Pip for changing my life, your story helped me finally be at peace

Please if you are serious about it, I encourage you to go to confession and learn what the church really teaches about homosexuality. You may have a misunderstanding o what the human is and how the church is involved with the salvation of souls. Know that you are called to be a saint, that is more than our natural state. You cannot ignore that the catholic church is the only church our Lord founded, be serious on your discernment. I am praying for you!

God makes us, guides us and loves us! Being Christian and being Gay is totally compatible. Listen to the words and love of Jesus, not the interpretations of men and if need be find the right congregation that accepts you for you. Don’t let others guilt you or bring you down, live in love and peace.

I hope you reconsider your conversion and your faith. Believe in God because God exists. Believing in God because it fits conveniently with who you want to have sex with is an illegitimate reason for faith. It's no different than sales people who join a church so they can try to turn the congregation into customers. It's unethical. If God exists then God exists and if God does not exist then God does not exist. God's existence does not depend on your sexuality. Please don't deceive honest believers into thinking you're a brother Christian who has genuine faith when your faith actually rests on who you're sexually attracted to

My honest opinion as a christian guy dealing with same sex attraction . He should have not married. but I do understand the circumstances he was in making that decision. In the end we all as human beings should take accountability for our own decisions, because GOD is the only one able to judge us as believers. My fullness of my identity is not for me nor humans to deside what I am... it is only God who can do that. And God says (Romans 8:17) we are sons and daughters we are heirs of the Kingdom of God. My sexual orientation is NOT my identity, my true identity is far beyond that. And for the sake of a healthy fear of God I choose to live a celebate life, because it honours the word of God, it honours my fellow believers and it honours my body which is the temple of God. This is a personal decision formed by my own experience, not forced by any religion or peer pressure. All I hope is that all believers find peace , hope , freedom and Love in Christ.

And Jesus Christ understands that we are not infallible. Anyone trying to say that there are people who are not worthy of the love of Jesus Christ are just modern-day Pharisees. Not even they in all their Mosaic Law & order were exempt from needing forgiveness from God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. For ALL have sinned, and fallen short of the glory of God. I’m a SSA young man convert to Catholicism and I must say that though my sexuality is part of who I am, it is not the core of my identity. As a religious person my identity is first with Our Lord Jesus and His Church. I encourage anyone who wants to know the actual stance of the Catholic Church on homosexuals to read the Catechism or to hear talks which are available in this video platform given by Fr. Mike Schmitz.

I am aware that the video is not directly related to the Catholic Church. I just wanted to show another point of view from a religious person who is SSA. Also the fact that the person went to a congregation merely for their acceptance of his sexuality in my opinion is not a good sign. I converted from a church who could have accepted this behavior to the Church who teaches otherwise. I converted because I had to surrender to what had been revealed to me. The Most Holy Sacrament. It should be said that according to the Church beings SSA is not a sin itself though acting on it is. God bless you.

I used to think this was pettiness but this is a deep deep sickness in many Catholics. On this issue the church is unnaturally disordered and must repent of its mortal sin. Many of the hierarchy will burn.

This story is so heart breaking. I am a believer and even though I would not be able to say that gay marriage is okay, I do believe that everyone should be allowed in church. The bible says that every sin is equal so if we don't allow every sinner into church, what kind of church are we? We all have fallen short of the glory of God and we are called to love God first and everyone else too. How could anyone be denied the love of God and be called to repentance if they are shunned when they are seeking God? I love that the church truly has a "Come as you are" attitude. In that respect, I agree.

Dick Watson: The Metropolitan Community Church is one excellent option. And there are other good options as well. The Episcopal is about as open and affirming as they come. Most United Church of Christ congregations are open and affirming, many Disciple of Christ congregations are as well. And see what your local United Methodist congregations are saying and doing in the wake of their recent kerfuffle. The so-called Traditional Plan has forced many of them off the fence, and a surprising number of UMC congregations and Conferences are openly defying the General Conference decision, and are choosing love over hate, and inclusion over exclusion. Gary Wait: Thank you for your concern and prayer For more than fifty years I have thrown myself on the forgiveness and mercy of the Almighty God made known to us through our Lord Jesus Christ. As for your casual dismissal of the Apostle Paul. I say nothing beyond the observation that your position is neither original (many others have done the same thing) nor has you position ever gain any traction with the main stream of the Christian faith. It is, at best, a side show in the grand scheme of the Church. But in direct reply to your dismissal of the Apostle to the Gentiles, let me point out that on the matter of same sex relationships, our Lord Jesus Christ himself said this. "[.......]" That's right. Jesus said exactly nothing on the matter. Since you claim to be a follower of Jesus' Way, you could do worse than to follow His example, and say nothing on the matter either.

E T well I think you assume you are interpreting 1Timothy correctly, obviously out of context and with the eyes of a modernist. Well, try if you can, to imagine the context of this letter from Paul. If you read the interpretations from the Catholic Bishops or Orthodox Bishops ( those with authority from Christ to interpret these passages), you will see that this refers to either a rebuke of a specific case in the Ephesian church and the establishment of proper conduct. Men are to conduct themselves with honesty and without judgement. Women are to learn in a peaceful manner without quarrel. Both men and women are warned against displaying the arrogance of Eve. Now, you make two errors in your argument. One, you mistake Paul’s instruction to a specific situation, for a universal teaching or code of conduct. To be able to ascertain Paul’s overall message, you have to see what Paul’s total message is. Remember Paul also states the “we are all one in Christ.” Two, your rebuttal to my argument is invalid. This is because my argument states that one must be consistent with Christian teaching to call yourself a Christian, which the subject of the video fails to be. You establish a red herring by comparing my apparent lack of adherence to Christian teaching to my claim regarding this video. This still does not address the content of my argument. Let me help you. You could be valid if you questioned whether or not Christianity actually teaches the doctrine that practicing homosexuality is sinful. That would force me to prove the point. Question my adherence to the faith does not do this validly.

What is striking and somewhat powerful about everyone in the video is that they come across as loving and accepting of one another, they are genuine about what they're doing and who they are, the overall takeaway is a sense of true unity. But I'm convinced that their unity does not come from Christ and His Word, but from themselves; they are united against God, but it doesn't appear that way at all, on the surface that is. But once you get to know Jesus-Christ personally, it becomes very obvious that Jesus-Christ is not their Lord. There is a subtle but fundamental difference between belonging to God and knowing Jesus-Christ and what He demands of His followers and using Jesus-Christ's teachings on mercy to ignore and reject what He says about His Holiness, repentence and sanctification. They are deceived and deceiving others.

Not now. If you are NOT homosexual, why don't you invest your time and energy in something more productive rather than playing the role of God, quoting the Bible and judging other people. Does it make you feel more powerful and better than others ? Now, if you ARE homosexual or have someone near you who is, probably you need reassurance, love and inner peace or help. Some have lived most of their lives in shame and guilt. A horrible burden. And that hasn't help them to fix the problem. To find a community that is supportive is important, like the guy in this video. However, the bottom line is to find peace and acceptance inside ourselves. And believe that God somehow is going to make you live a life worth living.

It's a turn away from the Gospel of Jesus Christ in reality, 1 Corinthians 6:9 says "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men". We all go through difficult circumstances in life in one way or another but embracing our sin is the opposite of what God wants for us. Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."

Why do you use Catholic symbols, ie., statues, rosaries, etc., when you are obviously not Catholic much less a Catholic priest? Any genuine message which this story tried to convey was swept away by these false pretenses. Which leaves one major conclusion to the storyline. That is, “Catholicism is bad, retrograde and does not accept “us”. Whomever that “us” may be. This story seems to be just another jab at Catholicism. Furthermore, regarding a statement made by the reverend. Something to the effect that the church should celebrate people. The Christian Church is not about celebrating people it is about worshipping God.

And, it the small circles that were rising up in the field of black behind them, I wish they had been coming down, symbolizing Christ's body being available to all the people for whom He died and gave His life, rather than being lifted or taken up, away from the people. Understand. Completely. Done the journey. 33 years ago. Found Christ 37 years ago. Or more - He found me. Even more so now - I have Him and He is so - SO clear He has me. On the day I came to faith - at this new place called church - I said to them - but I guess you guys don't approve of homosexuality? Then. Great days of discovery. And everything was - of course possible. And marriage. God was in charge. And the church would help me through. Until the 'therapy' and healing - didn't bring change. And that day - eight years into marriage when my wife turned to me in my 'counselled to death self' - and said - 'if I can't have a husband I must have children'. By the mercy of God - we were to fail at that. The IVF failed. Thank God. And then I said - no more. I am gay - and I must accept that - come what may - even though you cannot. I gave my wife everything we had. House - everything. Found a room. Church removed me from all ministry. No one would talk to me. It is still against the rule of that church - ie therapy is offered. So. Separated. Divorced. Utterly broken. But a friend invited me to a group of Christians coming out - coming out of ex-gay - and just looking to Jesus. That was enough. IE - Jesus was 'enough'. He is. I have a new life. With a partner of 16 years now. We are happy. I haven't a church because I no longer live in the UK. But I have God - and the Holy Spirit just won't let up on me - us. He is faihful - when I am faithless. What we have needed - even when it seemed absolutely impossible - it has been given. Miraculously. Like a house. Even. When I had no money to afford it. But most of all - I have God. He is enough. Entirely. Abundantly. John 10:10. Hold fast to Christ. Don't be discouraged. Yes 'church' will fail. But faith. And hope. But the greatest - of course - is Love.

I am an ex-gay person. I suffered more with my gay peers and I learned a lot. I gave my burden to God. I am not interested in being with a man and getting married to one not to mention having children. However, I do love my gay brothers and sisters. It doesn't feel right to me so I decided to create new relationships with other people and started an online business.

Well, to each his own. Everyone is free to their own beliefs. No one is forced to love God. We all have free will. My point is that you can't have it both ways. If you are Christian, that means you believe the Bible and honor God's laws. No, you don't have to! But you can't say you're a Christian and break all of God's laws. That's like saying you are a virgin, but having sex. You can't ride the fence. Now you are free to choose parts of the Bible to follow, and have a spiritual journey, because you agree with some of the teachings. That's fine. But then you really can't logically call yourself a Christian, which is what he is doing.

  • @cuidatrava1

@wmnoffaith1 Give me a break. All Christians pick and choose what they want to understand from the Bible. It's a gigantic collection of literature full of contradictions and almost infinite interpretations, whose six passages seemingly condemning homosexual behavior tend to become quite ambiguous when one reads them in historical context. We all know the famous examples from Leviticus (mixing fabrics, eating shellfish, etc.) that Christians feel they have the right to ignore, while happily citing the supposed prohibition of gay sex. Deuteronomy teaches that parents have the right to stone their disobedient children to death. Both the old and new testaments seemingly condone slavery. Now you might say, "Ah! But you have to read those passages in their historical context!" And I'd say, "yep, that's the point".

THE SINS THAT CRY TO HEAVEN FOR VENGEANCE 5 . They called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to your house tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intimacies with them." 6 . Lot went out to meet them at the entrance. When he had shut the door behind him, 7 . he said, "I beg you, my brothers, not to do this wicked thing. 8 . I have two daughters who have never had intercourse with men. Let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you please. But don't do anything to these men, for you know they have come under the shelter of my roof." 9 . They replied, "Stand back! This fellow," they sneered, "came here as an immigrant, and now he dares to give orders! We'll treat you worse than them!" With that, they pressed hard against Lot, moving in closer to break down the door. 10 . But his guests put out their hands, pulled Lot inside with them, and closed the door; 11 . at the same time they struck the men at the entrance of the house, one and all, with such a blinding light that they were utterly unable to reach the doorway. 12 . Then the angels said to Lot: "Who else belongs to you here? Your sons (sons-in-law) and your daughters and all who belong to you in the city - take them away from it! 13 . We are about to destroy this place, for the outcry reaching the LORD against those in the city is so great that he has sent us to destroy it." -- Genesis 19:5 - 13 True friends don't let friends get sodomized!
