Being a journalist - a real one anyway - is actually pretty hard and requires the journalist to do something that's actually kind of hard for a human: Set aside passions and beliefs and only report what can be proven to be factual. That's not something people do easily - even with training and education. I think Piper comes by her journalistic shortcomings "honestly". She just doesn't ~know~ how to "do it right". It's not like there's a university she could attend to teach journalistic ethics and such. Quite a few small-town newspapers IRL are pretty much exactly like Publick Occurrences - and those are the good ones! The others only print puffy crap that won't offend advertisers.

Exactly right. I found that the other students in my class had an extremely hard time focusing on the facts, and throwing their emotions and personal thoughts aside. So I can definitely see how someone would end up like piper if they didn't have any proper education.

That doesn't make any sense though. She just happens to be right, but at no point does she provide any evidence to support her claims. There is no logical reason for anyone to suspect that the mayor is a synth. The Synthetic Truth is just an accusation with no evidence. All she does is create fear and paranoia, but no actual solutions or plan. Good example is the scene in Diamond city where someone is accusing his brother of being synth. If people start doubting everyone, the city has already fallen.

Nobody seems to acknowledge that during your first interaction, security is casually leaving her for dead. Diamond city is surrounded on all sides by raiders, super mutants, dangerous animals…and the guy at the front gate is talking to her like his younger sister who’s been put in time out lol

Of course if you leave a “free” press it’s going to criticize you if you aren’t the best leader. So the mayor is incapable of action apparently, they want the press gone but they can’t lift a finger to do it. Not that they should be getting rid of the press, almost if not everything they wrote was right. (Aside from the SS’s sarcastic responses)

Her voice actress did such a great job. She made all her lines sound like part of a real conversation, which is insanely hard to do when recording solo.

Finish the “Curtains Call” mission (rescue that gentleman on the tower together with Strong) and you get a suit with +3 CHR. Glasses and hats that +1 are comparably easy to find. The trick is to pause the dialogue and change your clothes and make a quicksave.

With all the comic books laying around the commonwealth and the whole silver shroud quest line, it's very likely that's not a coincidence. Thanks for pointing out the parallels! I like Fallout and Superman but never made that connection before.

The reason I knew Piper was onto something from the very beginning about mayor McDonough was based on what one of his security guards said in the beginning he said "the mayor has expressly told us not to investigate any disappearances." That really sealed it for me. I knew she was onto something. There are other signs that are escaping me right now, but if you look carefully, you'll see them.

Yeah she's more of a gonzo/opinion journalist than an investigative one, there's SIGNS absolutely that McDonaugh is a synth or working with the Institute. The one you mentioned is the biggest one, but also Hancock mentions his smile was incredibly creepy and unnatural and "not like when they were kids," people who grew up with them probably at least noticed a strange vibe Piper would pick up on. Plus the general disrepair of Diamond City when she arrives would immediately set off corruption detectors, and a hidden entrance behind a bookcase seems like a nice way to kidnap people...

You can skip the first dialogue you have with her by going to park street station, have nick valentine lead the way and he’ll take you to diamond city where the doors are already opened. You get to walk right past the mayor and piper, her quests are still the same just gotta go to her office and tell her the situation with Shaun. I find its more immersive.

No kidding. My first playthrough before I figured out the Item duplication glitch and Supply Lines, I was lugging 1,000 pounds worth of scrap, gear and weapons to sell for ammo & more scrap for Settlement builds. I wish I had gotten it on camera but before I unlocked the Strong Back perks and was walking very slowly to a Settlement to unload guess what walks up toward me, a Legendary Deathclaw. Imagine in real life someone shedding 1,000 pounds worth of garbage just to be able to move well enough to fight a giant monster lol

Nat seems to have more of a mind for business, I don't think Piper really wants her to scare people to sell papers but Nat on the other hand being the one selling papers all day realizes she sells more papers if she scares people. Piper is the Noble truth seeking journalist and Nat is Jonah Jameson from spiderman without the power of an editor and chief, probably for the best.

Piper is my absolute favorite companion. I love how she calls me by a nickname and is completely loyal. I took her with me on the final mission of the game, best decision ever.

“A bitter truth is easier than the sweetest of lies” That’s something Piper clearly stands for and something I’ve always admired in life

The animations for when she's going off at the intercom is nice, the face animations where eh at times but the custom animation like that is something I wish we saw more in the game tbh

Hearing how crushed and devastated Piper is if you side with The Institute and they win, it hurts to hear that pain in her voice. That pain of “my best friend just stabbed me in the back, and now I can do nothing to undo any of it.”

I see all FO4's budget went on Piper's hand movement :P

I never did understand why certain RPGs feel the need to have characters wildly gesticulating, especially when the hand movements have absolutely nothing to do with the conversation and just feel random.

Rewatching this because I love her voice acting when you choose the institute. It seems so genuine. I can't stomach choosing the institute when I play so I'm thankful for this video. :)

I married her in my game because she's just an amazing character who pursues the truth, with the perfect dash of sarcasm

I just feel like Piper at least when you meet her has probably the best animation of any dialogue ingame as far as I'm aware

I loved her physical animations, she never breaks character in game.

I never looked into piper too much and thought she was just some random character you can take as a companion but here I not only learned that piper's story is interesting but I learned that all companions have a tale to tell

I love how animated the characters are at the beginning, unfortunately that scripting stops right after the death of Kellogg.

Yeah, the writers had planned out those major plot points ahead of time. Your first introduction to Diamond City, Kellogg's discussion with X6-88, Maxson's interrogation and trial of Danse, etc. - all these were on the storyboard long before anything else, and as such got the most attention. Everything else that was meant to fill in the gaps got the copy-paste treatment.

I always have a “main” play-through whenever I play any RPG, and all the decisions I make are the ones I would genuinely make in real life. During my main play-through of Fallout 4, I chose to romance Piper because I thought she was genuinely attractive. Fast forward to 2019, I married my wife, Kristine. It wasn’t until watching this video that I realized how similar Piper’s personality is to my actual wife. She’s outspoken, driven, and has excellent instincts, despite not always being the most agreeable. Funny how that kinda worked out.

Pipers animatioms when she speaks are really realistic. The devs really put a lot of effort into animating her

Doubt anyone would read this, but the one thing that bothered me was Piper just leaving Nat behind. It felt to me like a massive issue left unaddressed. Personally, I think they should've done more with the relationship and story between the sisters. What if during or for Pipers max affinity quest, we all discover in a shocking plit twist that NAT is also a synth? Not only would it be a heartbreaking and sobering revelation that Pipers sister was snatched and children can be synths too, but it'd also tie up the loose end of just leaving Nat behind. The MC and Piper or the city would be forced to take action, not resulting in killing the child synth of course (for legal reasons) but perhaps ousting or even bringing the Synth Nat to a settlement like sanctuary if choosing to do so. Wonder what that kinda revelation would do to Piper's psyche?

The fact that Piper sounds hopeful about Insitute if you romance her is actually a very good choice on Bethesda's part.

Frankly that hopefulness about the Institute makes me suspect that the Institute replaced Piper with a synth in that ending. What better way to have more of the Commonwealth's support than by having one of its most vocal critics appear to slowly warm up to them?

The Institute Ending is basically you taking control. If you played the game as a babyface, your companions basically are like "I hope you know what you're doing." Piper and Nick are pissed but still give you the benefit of the doubt.

I think you missed the huge piece of evidence for the mayor being a synth that she had. She told you clearly, "he always meets with the same courier" and states that the courier is not a part of any faction or caravan she can find. Additionally the courier, according to her, is in and out usually without a trace. Knowing what she knows about the institute and her very able sourcing of information, it is definitely suspicious that the mayor wouldn't simply say "this is what this meeting is for and here is the guy." I think she had a good amount of evidence for the claim, but that since it was all circumstantial, that she had to go with her gut on it.

The problem with the Institute is that even after you take control as the director, why does the game not allow you to change the primary goals of it?

Christian Reinard Yeah. All's fair in love and war, and those two seemingly-antithetical elements actually have an ironic and uncanny capability to mutually coexist.

If the Minutemen ending is canon, and the Minutemen become a growing empire that keeps on expanding throughout the East Coast, Piper's canon ending should be something similar to Piper herself looting old world Libraries to get knowledge on Congress, Democracy, Elections and pre War life. Piper should use those books and holotapes, as well as her Journalism skills, to help the Minutemen with their Pre War knowledge

I'm pretty sure the Institute is the canon ending. Usually the most powerful faction wins, not the best one. That teleporter and the camera crows give them way to big of an advantage.

I wanna think the minutemen are gonna make it canonically But realistically, i think the institute survived. Those "free" synths were programed to seek out the railroad, Dance and Maxus were. So theres a chance its all part of the plan to rebuild the institute through synths only

I cant help but feel like I've fallen in love with Pipers character just like Veronica in new vegas. So wholehearted and with the best intentions with just... a bad upbringing given your outlook on their situations and perspectives. They're really just the best parts about humanity, even if they make mistakes.

Piper is my favorite character. I always pick Piper, unless I go to Nuka World. I choose Dogmeat if I go to Nuka World, cuz Dogmeat won't hate me.

Piper falls in love with you harder than any other, including Cait who really goes head-over-heels for you. Basically, you're Cait's saviour, but you're Piper's Idol to worship if you wipe out the Institute.

Her "gift of gab" perk is best to get early , and fairly easy since you can just pick locks. I usually hit her first, to get more xp from discovering locations and speech checks .

Am I the only one who noticed that while Ox was talking to Piper, he switched from the vault suit to the farmhand outfit, right after she comments on the vault suit. Also, 3,000 likes vs. 49 dislikes...friggin' synths...hidin' amoung us. Also also, it was hilarious the way you BOLTED to the nearest bed the second you passed the romance option with piper, all the while being deep and whatnot about her personality. You sir, are gold incarnate.

Since the Guardian of Forever is a thing, as seen in Fallout 2, we need to get all the protagonists together.

One thing that bothers me about Piper is that, When you first initially meet her she has a number of unique animations that only get used once. A lot of personality can be expressed in body language but she just looks, walks and talks like every other NPC

It's too bad all animations have to be pre-baked due to engine limitation, thus limiting the number of unique animations. No on the fly animation like in say witcher 3, where the engine can basically animate half the animation on the fly based off vague instructions.

Piper is probably my favorite companion from a personality standpoint but I rarely use companions (Outside of dogmeat cuz he doesn't break lone survivor for some reason) because they just gobble up all your stimpacks on survival mode and lone survivor is a busted perk especially on survival mode.
