I am a vegan but I recognize my privilege to be able to afford to eat a healthy vegan diet and I will never judge anyone else for what they eat. Food isn't just fuel, it is a part of your life.

I’m disabled, and if I could reliably make my own meals, I’d be at least vegetarian, maybe vegan. But I need a lot of easy to prepare foods, and so many of them use animal products, the vegetarian/vegan options being significantly more expensive. I wish I was in a better food distribution system, or had better health and/or finances.

The problem isn't really eating animals/using animal byproducts but the sustainability of it. Instead of cutting out meat and animal byproducts, the focus should be supporting sustainable agricultural practices. Stuff like sourcing your meat from farms that raise their animals well, using as much of an animal as you can and doing the same with plant based products. Just because something's a meat alternative doesn't mean it doesn't come with its own share of problems, like deforestation and pesticide use.

i dont think eating animals/animal based things (eggs milk etc) is itself wrong, but i do think how animals are often treated while they are still alive is wrong in many farms and such, or overhunting/fishing for wild animals

As a vegetarian, if you eat meat and you honor the animal and get the most use out of what its providing for you, i dont see it as wasteful or bad. We use to live like that as humans and honoring the animal is the best thing you can do if you do eat meat. I honestly wish conditions for animals being used for meat purposes were a lot less cruel, i think it wouldnt be as bad if the conditions were nicer.

No need to be sorry. It’s a struggle for me to not eat meat as well, as a pro vegan. Sometimes meat is all that’s available to me at times. And there are times where I only wanna eat fruits and vegetables, but they’re either not available or too expensive. So I try to grow my own crops and get those for free, but most of the time the crops end up dying in the desert dry heat. But every now and then they survive and I get lucky, and I’m able to eat just fruits and veggies

I was trying my best to get into vegetarian and vegan diets, but alas, having IBS really complicates things. My doctor tells me to eat things with low FODMAPS, and that includes many of my favorite ways to replace meat: I can't have mushrooms, I can't have beans, I can't have most wheat, and I can't have dairy. Most forageable items, like dandelions and blackberries, my body doesn't seem to break them down. Do you know how much of this stuff I was already eating? Besides, my energy levels is not the same when I eat vegetarian versus when I eat meat. My attention span does not go as far. I often feel very empty when I just eat vegetarian things. I can't even supplement eating certain snacks because the snacks are filled with shit I can't eat. I'm always reading labels because something is going to hurt me if I'm not careful. I'm sorry, but I cannot subject myself to what I was experiencing before I was diagnosed and had to change my diet. I was on the couch every night in a fetal position because I was in so much pain. The gas was not leaving me, and it seems my body was not breaking down things I should have been breaking down. Y'all I can't even eat apples!

It's not the biggest deal to me as a vegetarian, I'd say hunting is mildly more ethical than things like store bought beef in any case If there's one thing I do appreciate from meat eaters, it's avoiding arguments that support the meat industry just because the cognitive dissonance is more comfortable than the reality of harm. Harm's a part of life and it's best be straightforward about it--that leaves the reduction of harm an easier thing to achieve if and when possible

  • @starojunes

It's a bit odd to say stuff like being thankful for animals who "give" their lives. Animals don't willingly give their lives up. They cannot consent. Do what you think is right and do what you need to survive but do not sugarcoat it. Animals can't consent. They do not want to die. They want to live just like us. They do not want to be afraid or be in pain. They do not want to suffer. I understand there are people who can't go vegan, but I think using language that implies that animals "give" their lives to us completely disregards the victim. Non-human animals don't have any concept of being thanked or honor.

  • @princesseuphemia1007

This. This is why I hate the 'give their lives' sentiment. I get there are valid reasons some can't be vegan or why there can be some exceptions where in really remote areas hunting is actually better for the environment or is the only way to survive ect but the 'give their lives' thing is just an excuse. And I know eating 100% vegan is really hard in the U.S. but I'd still push for encouraging people to eat less of it in general if that's more sustainable for them because I'd rather 100 people eat meat twice a week than 10 people never eat it at all because the time and effort commitments are so huge.

Non-human animals don't have any concept of wanting to live or die either. They will avoid things that are scary and/or hurt, but that's very different from wanting to live, or not wanting to die.

I respect the hell out of veganism -- some close friends of mine are vegan. Myself, I try to minimize the amount of animals that are in the food I eat. But they _are_ there. Right now I think it _is_ a major moral issue because of capitalism, because of the enormous industry and it's mass atrocities it commits against living, conscious animals every single day. Veganism doesn't stop that... it is more of a dampener, but there's still a lot of pain and suffering involved in vegan / veganesque foods that are sold in grocery markets. This is not because there's some big flaw to veganism, but because the underlying system of Capitalism has no problem with cruelty and suffering. It doesn't _have_ to have that, but there's no reason to avoid it, especially if it could impede the wealth accumulation of the Capitalists. It doesn't make any special allotments for veganism. Also, personally, I already have a number of dietary restrictions for health / food allergy reasons. A lot of vegan foods would still be dangerous or downright deadly to me, so it's not _that_ easy of thing to just switch to for some. Finally, if we could shut down the industry part of the food industry -- have farming be done by regular, independent people rather than a few megacorps, completely be rid of factory farming so that there just aren't any animals kept in captivity and definitely not put in torturous and inhumane circumstances to be "fattened up" on a profitable timescale with no care for the suffering the animals endure before they're unceremoniously slaughtered -- if instead meat consumption was a rarity, with animals hunted from the wild -- preferring the elderly -- I think that would be perfectly acceptable. No different from the natural order. So long as it's not on the current massive scale and not depriving living beings of their liberty. As such, I view veganism as noble, but really just a stopgap solution that winds up being very ineffective because the forces at play just aren't affected. If, in the extremely unlikely event, everyone in the world turned vegan I am rather certain it would just mean that all existing animals would be slaughtered, their corpses used up or left to rot in a landfill, no efforts to _not_ kill animals indirectly would be made -- chickens, turkeys, pigs, cows, etc would be effectively genocided -- made exinct -- just for not have worth anymore and no profit to be made in avoiding that. and _then_ efforts would just be put to turning that calculating cruelty and indifference against all plant life (and the associated insects and still yet some larger animals that are involved in the plants' cycle) to a greater extent that already happens. Lots more farmland would be needed, meaning getting rid of any pesky forests or fields that currently harbor animal life. Only a revolution (ideally peaceful, but one takes what they can get) that completely puts an end to Capitalism and sees the full rise of anarchism and some kind of socialism or socialism-originated-thing-I-can't-yet-imagine will ever see an actual solution to what happens now. I have no qualms with vegans, I respect them and try to emulate them to what extent I can. I just know it's nowhere near enough on its own.

As a vegan: apology denied. There is nothing to apologise about! I think you should try but if you can't that's fine. I don't think it helps the vegan movement anyway to pressure anyone. Veganism should be the product of contemplation in my opinion and that can be encouraged by respecting others' process. But I do think we should encourage conversations on the topic. In particular industrial animal agriculture is a problem to be solved. Harm-reduction is a start.

Honestly the way farming is done is just so freaking sad. It's really encouraging me to want to grow my own chickens so I can have eggs when I want. I don't know too much about butchering so I probably won't go that route, but I love taking care of animals.
